MotoGP: 2024 Round 2 Grande Prémio Tissot de Portugal

Marc tried a pass, Bagnaia checked up and tried to undercut him, expecting Marc to run wide... Marc was setting that one up for a couple laps, Bagnaia knew it and was taking a defensive attack to the left corners. I don't think Bagnaia really needed to be defensive, his bike was faster in sector 4 and down the front stretch, and he would have been able to easily regain that position.

Not any moreso for him than any other rider.
Yeah but it favored his aggressive style. He did what he has done since the round 1. Today the temps favored him more than others. In a hot and normal weekend his adventure would have finished his tires.

Cracking race. Martin supplying the riding to back up the talk. Bastiannini steadfast and Acosta awesome. Mav?

Once again, MM confirming why he won’t be in my pantheon of greats. Relying on the other rider to complete your pass for you is the epitome of hubris and it’s not just sometimes. Yesterday he got away with it because Martin picked the bike up instead of turning in on him. Today he turned in on Pecco. I don’t care how good MM is or was.

But, on to the future! Looks like a promising season.

What happened to MM’s pace (and Peccos for that matter) both looked like they had pace all weekend and then neither were able to maintain the pace of the top 4. More Michelin QC issues?
It's weird for sure. Somehow has to do with the tires, you can be sure. Sometimes I got myself thinking some conspiracies but it's just Michelin sucking hard. An weekend where MV rode up front and even won the sprint and riders like Brad, Pecco and MM fighting for 6th/7th. So what we have? Now riders have to be lucky enough to grab the tire of the race. Next weekend is Marc best chance to win after so much time struggling, but I wonder if he'll be given a good tire to try and also if Ducati has what is needed for him to make the difference in COTA.

He didn't need to see Bagnaia, Marc knew he was wide off the racing line, why would he expect Bagnaia to sit and wait for him to recover? Bagnaia took the opening that was there and Marc attempted to close the gap but he was too late. Racing incident but Marquez has some blame.
horse ..... That makes it Marcs line. Pecco is responsible for not allowing Marc the space. Pecco took an opening that wasn't there. This wasn't a racing incident it was Peccer not accepting being passed.

Vinales or aleix get the ocational win if all stars aligned plus someone in front of them having an error. Not today though, looked like a technical.

Marc still finishing in front of marini despite the crash 😜 and almost salvaging a point

Great race by acosta with an lucky and early podium in only his second race

I don't know where Pecco was going, he could have avoided that entirely IMO. But drunk at the handlebars as usual. He's really got to work on bringing home the bike instead of engaging in pointless battles where the other rider is clearly faster by that point.

Pedro is fantastic. He was the only interesting rider to watch today really. Hopefully this continues and should show Pecco why you stay upright instead of eating pavement. Podium in only his second grand prix is incredible. He was my rider of the day and easily the best thing about today's race.

Martin rode well. But he needs that clear track to stay in front. Traffic is another story. But he's got a good lead now in the championship standings so he came out the best of everyone today.

Sucks for Mav, can't believe that happened on the last lap.
I share your view on the incident. It is a difficult double corner, and MM. did run wide, but there was no reason other than ego/pride for Bagnaia to risk what actually happened to take the place back for a corner or two when he clearly didn’t have the pace, and he presumably could see where MM was. I similarly didn’t have much sympathy for MM back in 2015, I think it was at the Argentinian Grand Prix, when Valentino Rossi caught up 4 seconds on him and MM went down trying to re-pass. This incident is probably not going to win friends and influence people at Ducati greatly in MM’s favour though.

As someone said Acosta made much the better pass, He has also learned to preserve KTM tires after one race, something Jack Miller unfortunately still can’t do.

Marc is king of cota but that was on a honda. Dont know if it suits the Ducati, but the way pedro rides the corners and the topspeed of ktm/gasgas he might be able to surprise everyone at cota with a maiden win

I have to agree certainly about it not doing MM any favors with the Ducati people. It's unfortunate because it was nothing more than a racing incident even if avoidable. But they are always going to side with the factory rider on such an issue. Probably one of the downsides of being on the satellite team, less leeway to be had even if in the right. I think the unfortunate thing about the incident is that MM really just needed to finish around where he was for damage control purposes since there didn't seem to be a great deal of pace to be had.

He definitely did make the better pass. Or picked the better location to make the pass. I find it fascinating how Jack Miller has managed to last all this time in MotoGP while not being able to really do a great job of preserving tires outside of one off occasions. But I think it's for the best Acosta is showing what he has now since it will make the transition to the factory team one of those without any debate since it is entirely on merit. Brad Binder is going to be in for a rough time next year I think.

That is pretty much it. He was slower than MM. at that stage in the race despite the straight line advantage this year’s bike has. MM obviously has to pass him on a corner, and it was going to be on another one fairly soon if he hadn’t made this pass.

Great race. Acosta being the main entertainment. His overtaking is breathtaking with great bike control and the ability to maintain smooth speed during each overtake.

Happy for Martin. A commanding win for him.

An unfortunate racing incident between Marc and Pecco. I don’t think it was entirely Pecco’s or Marc’s fault. They were both aggressively vying for position with the crash being the result of a misunderstanding in such a tight situation that neither had time to react to avoid what happened.

I feel for Maverick especially since he this has been such a great showing in such a long time.

Marc's bike (GP23) is noticeably slower in the straights then the GP24 and the KTMs, with 2 long straights at COTA will he be able to hang with the newer bikes?

I think it looked a lot worse here because of the long last corner with the hill in it. It actually made the Aprilia look like it had more drive than the Ducati. It was more about the fact that the Aprilia is planted better and could take the corner faster and Mav could accelerate better off of it.
