2024 Round 20 Petronas GP of Malaysia - Petronas Sepang International Circuit

Great ride by Pecco.
That medium front Martin ran didn't have more pace at the end it seemed.
He made up half a second in one lap with 6 to go, almost crashed in turn 9 the next lap and got the memo.

Both Yamahas in the Top 8!
Would've liked to see some of Marc's overtakes at the end, wonder if they were all without controversy.

Assuming that Martin wins the championship, then like Bagnaia he will have won his first championship in his fourth year in MotoGP.

Like Quartararo Martin didn't really shine in Moto2, but made it to MotoGP. Though, Martin's results were better than Quartararo's in Moto2.

EDIT: The talk is of Bagnaia having ten wins this year, the largest number of wins in a season for a rider who didn't win the championship. Martin has ten second places already - is that a record too?

The title goes to the final round. Holy should can it not be any better.

It would be better if they were tied on points :) Personally I think it's all over bar the shouting. However, I thought that in BSB back when Leon Haslam looked like a shoe-in for the championship and Shakey Byrne had different ideas in the last round.

That goodness Miller isn't badly hurt

So that narrows Martin's lead to 24 points. If at the final race Baganaiai win's both the sprint and race then Martin needs 14 points to be world champion which could be sprint DNF and race 4th. If Martin wins the sprint then he is world champion regardless of the outcome of the race.

He'd need 3rd on Sunday if he DNF in the sprint and Frantisek wins both races because Frantisek has more wins.

Jörg can afford to take it easy in both races, I hope he won't make it unnecessarily exciting by crashing on Saturday.

Haven't read posts so I don't know what happens but I started the race. My heart rate is humming and there's still 16.5 laps to go. Jorge cannot help himself but part of me loves it. The other part of me is screaming "just follow Pecco!!!" Damn.

Also, glad Jack is okay. That was ugly.

Also, part II. Marc must have a smile on his face. I'm curious as to how he will play this if he has a chance for a higher step on the podium.

Thankfully, Marquez and Pecco didn't tangle. This thread can move on to the afterlife peacefully. Pecco is keeping it interesting. Martin was smart and let Pecco claw back 5 pts. Time is on Jorge's side. He can run out the clock.

Glad everyone is okay after the nasty crash. Almost wondering if Sepang is too dangerous to race. Plenty of tracks have quick right-left, but it seems like the riders are completely oblivious to the whereabouts of their competitors when they get out from under the bodywork. I'm glad another rider wasn't lost.

"Fabulous job by Fabio Quatararo. This could be the first time a Japanese motorcycle has finished in the top 6 on a Sunday Grand Prix in 2024."

There was a time when I thought I'd never hear such a thing, especially during the 19th race of the season. Mir did his part. Marc tries to keep pace with the GP24s and cannot. Foolish? Me thinks a little. Podiums are always nice. I got 10.5 laps to go. Jorge seems to have come to his senses.

A little disappointed in the heli cam as it's focusing on Pecco all by himself while there are good battles further back. Bez got all out of shape behind Zarco and for a second I thought he might make contact. Wanted to see Bez's pass on Zarco from the heli cam but no dice.

Never been so happy to see them show Jack on screen. I'm glad he is ok. Excellent first few laps. We have been waiting two years to see them two race each other. One more round to race each other then Jorge is off to mid pack glory. Bring on Catalonia. Thats a great track for a last battle. Much better than the go-kart track in Valencia.

Pre-race, Martin's lead in the championship was 46.8% of the remaining points available.

If the race finishes like this, Martin's lead in the championship will be 64.9% of the remaining points available.

Big step forward for Martin.

Look at you getting all mathy on us. Professor Twit? :)

This was most likely a good thing.

Indeed and I'm not gonna lie, when I saw Jack's helmet up in Fabios rear fender, my mind flashed to Marco Simoncelli. Scary stuff.

Post race cool down lap observations. Alex Marquez gave Pecco a handshake and a big thumbs-up so maybe no love lost there? Martin also gave Pecco a big smack-shake as if to say; "hell of a show, mate." I think it bothers Martin he threw everything at Pecco and did not win the race, though it finally appears Jorge is thinking of winning the war and not the battle.

Yes - I mean I guess it is on some level interesting to speculate on the future based on stats, but racing, like life in general IMHO - is made interesting by way of unpredictability. Most of the stats that blithering race announcers get so excited about, are really tedious because they're predictable eventualities, like, so-and-so is doing his 50th race today, which to my mind is, So What! We knew that was coming. Or - Oooh! So-and-so shaved 2000th of a second off the lap record from 5 years ago. Well, So What? It was a foreseeable outcome given the year-to-year improvements in technology, tires etc. And so on . . . It's like the announcers are channeling Rain Man.

My stat of the day: Matt Birt mentioned Viettie's bum shoulder 42.5 times in the course of the race. Which was totally predictable. LOL

I always wonder at moments like that, how much the winner being gracious and clapping the other rider on the shoulder is bonhommie and how much that same gesture might be a bit of a passive aggressive way of saying, Hey pretty good . . . for 2nd place. LOL
