2024 MotoGP Round 7: Gran Premio d'Italia Brembo - Mugello

Pecco gets hit with a 3 position grid penalty for his incident with Lil' Márquez, so he'll start in 4th at the very best in the full race (don't know if it also applies to the sprint). Not a fan of Pecco's response admitting no fault and calling Alex a "showman", cocky Pecco is worst Pecco, I prefer his "we work in silence" side. All this after he gestured like a madman the previous year because Marc was towing him, which isn't as serious as this recent incident. The way he had a go at Alex makes me think if Pecco is also playing a part in keeping Marc away from a factory seat.
Is Yamaha turning things around?
They tested here recently, they have a jump-start in terms of setup. I'll wait a couple of extra GPs before popping up the champagne.

These practice times are intriguing. Unfortunately, I’m not in a situation where I can watch practice, but Rins in 2nd and Oliveira as the top Aprilia are interesting results!

It’s no secret that I would like for the championship to tighten up, but hopefully Martin will stay in a good headspace. Though I rate Pecco highly and believe his championships were earned, it’s possible to make the argument that his opponents have blundered their way to making him a 2-time champion, particularly if you’re analyzing 2022. Martin needs to be a legitimate contender, along with Marc for the entire season. No more public bluster and outlandish mistakes when the heat is turned up.

Paging Red Bull KTM. Has anyone seen KTM?

Pecco is really interesting to watch ride because sometimes I feel as if his speed can border more on being sublime than anything. He never looks to be going quite as fast as he actually is since he does a remarkable job of keeping the bike in line on corner entry, and carrying unbelievable corner speed. Something about it reminds me a little bit of Alain Prost. He had a unique ability to make it look as if he were going slower than he really was and yet when you looked at the lap times, he was ungodly fast.

War of words probably drew the penalty, especially since he offered his opinion regarding the merits (or lack thereof) for penalty. It looked like the track was full of people touring in that section.

From MotoGP.com

"The penalty only applies to the Grand Prix race, not the Tissot Sprint, but it means Bagnaia can’t start any further forward on Sunday than fourth on the grid as he looks to take his third Italian GP win in a row."

Thats a pretty a stiff punishment for someone who received nothing for drunk driving.

This penalty could be good for the race, I want to see him in the trafic.
By the way, his GP24 is only one ten behind his previous lap record done with the GP23 last year... One ten just with one charge during Friday. I bet for a pole in 44.4...

He absolutely delivered when it mattered, and his opponents didn’t. Arguably their flakiness allowed him to overcome dnfs of his own earlier in the season, and FQ only needed to settle for 4ths and 5ths to win the title given the 90 point lead at one time, which is why I don’t rate him as highly as some do.

Martin is looking like he can put a whole season together, and MM is likely to do so as well, so Bagnaia will need to do the same to win the title this year as you imply.

I do think he has been the fastest rider of the aero bike era, on Sundays anyway, but find it hard to warm to him personally. Going by his comments after the contretemps with Alex Marquez in FP2 he does not seem to like either Marquez brother overly, and imo this is a subtext to MM’s negotiations to get on a factory Ducati, Bagnaia on the factory team and obviously everyone at VR46 actively hate him.

I agree and said something similar in my previous post made when I had not read this post of yours. This was my reaction as well, whether because of the Valentino connection or otherwise he doesn’t like MM, and extends that to his brother. I suspect MM is still somewhat intrinsically faster than him, so there is that as well. Somewhat telling that he apparently would prefer Martin over MM.

Whatever is going on with negotiations behind the scenes MM sounds fairly bullish about this race weekend at one of his non-favoured tracks, says he has top 3 pace which I am inclined to believe as whatever anyone thinks of him he has never been much of a one for idle boasts. He remains respectful of Bagnaia as he has been all season, even after Portimao, and says Bagnaia looks to have an advantage over the field.

Haven’t seen 4 manufacturers in the first 4 places for quite some time, probably won’t happen in qualifying but if it does I’ll be pleasantly surprised

Shall we start an MM conspiracy discussion as it was his brother who was involved in Bagnaia’s penalty? :)

You don't have to raise such a conspiracy theory, it is already being run on motorsports.com. Hard for Alex to arrange in advance for Bagnaia to be dawdling on the racing line though I would have thought.

Interesting shenanigans during the qualifying, with Bagnaia trying his hardest to not give rivals a chance for a tow, to Marc most likely. But in the end neither gets the ultimate prize, and Martín who looked the slowest of the trio during the weekend achieves his third pole position of the season. Marc crashed when he was going for the fastest lap but he can be happy with a first row start thanks to Pecco's penalty, who will go from 2nd to 5th while Marc gets bumped from 4th. A surprising Maverick will start in 2nd with the third best time.

Looks like an awesome day at Mugello. Everybody fast fast fast. Go Mav!

Didn’t see the incident with Bagnaia and A. Marquez. It had best have some real validity. Freddie the Decider!

On to the sprint!

It is what I have been saying, Pecco's words are calculated attacks. He never admits to his faults and passes blame on to others. Eventually his true colors will show just like his cult leader.
