Is it me or do the Ducati winglets look XL at Austin? Also, what's up with Smith in FP3?

One thing that has always struck me about the whole tyre debate was that the effects of a bespoke Rossi SNS would often become evident on Sunday morning warm up, hence giving rise to the enduring observation which became so throw away on here; 'JBs pulled another rabbit out of his arse'. The previous day, business end of qualifying however, everyone flung in a set of qualifiers and set up for one hot lap...and for ten minutes or so, without such pronounced inequities, you had a much more even playing field...a field which for many years Rossi ended up deeply mired within in grid position.

I realise that Vale favours the old qualifying format, but this is particularly since it favoured race simulation, allowed you to concentrate purely on set up and gather more data throughout the weekend which for many years, could then be fed back to Michelin in order - where possible -to personalise the race tyre. In 2001 in particular, Rossi's qualifying was less than stellar...but imagine knowing that your bike is capable of running one grade softer compound on a signature tyre with your name written on it. Watch those races again and it becomes so evident. Max, who invariably used to qualify on the front row, would often be routinely and systematically hunted down, stalked, toyed with and discarded with unfeasible ease. Then watch again the races at those circuits that tended to be levellers, where it was harder to exploit comparative advantage, such as PI.
A lot of false legends were born to the SNS. It was like clockwork, like you said, when everyone were on equal terms in qualifying, Rossi was not a God at all, you might even say average. Ahh but Burgess would work his magic overnight. How many times did we hear the ........ that they found something overnight. For those that were paying attention, knew what was at work and it wasnt Burgess's magic.

13th to 3rd for Crutches? I was certain he was going to rack up a bill on that lap. Good on him.

Yes, but we have to remember the racing department is really just part of marketing. Can you imagine the yellow horde if Yamaha did that. I picture dealerships having windows smashed and caught on fire...

There have to be people in the Yamaha organization at some level who could bring to bear sufficient pressure to get Rossi to address this crap. Their not doing so - I reckon - could be a deciding factor for Lorenzo moving (assuming it's true) to Ducati. There has to be a degree of resentment at Yamaha taking him back after the Ducati debacle. Lorenzo had done yeomen duty for Yamaha in Rossi's absence and he must have felt that Yamaha should have shown a clear indication of their loyalty to him and given him a degree of preference over Rossi. I expect hearing of Rossi's contract renewal for the next few years must have kept him awake at night - thinking about the prospect of sharing the garage with Rossi for another three years. Definitely think that Pov makes that point really well. I just hope being at Ducati doesn't end up being his downfall.

They did find something 'overnight'.

So everyone closed the gap to MM on brand new soft rears...while MM was churning out a series of high 2:03's on used medium rear...ominous for qualifying and the race tomorrow. I suspect everyone will be running mediums for the race. Can't see the softs being a viable option unless you are Crutchlow and planning to crash out early. Iannone was a little over a tenth behind MM's best, but the race is a great opportunity for him to extend his DNF streak with the pressure he is feeling currently.

Bradley Smith's lack of performance is probably related to the 2017 KTM contract.

Barbera was screwed with a front brake issue late so he missed out on a top 10. Loris Baz looked good though...nice to see him up there in the top 10.

Will be interesting to see if Rossi finds some more time come FP4 and Q2.

Fastest non factory qualifier
What? We're still doing this CRT ....?

Aprilia is practically a CRT. Would they be in parcferme in the unlikely event they qualified in front of other satellite? Aren't Aprilia still getting the remnants of Open Class concessions?

Rossi found quite a bit of time for qualifying as usual and gets himself a front row start.

Predictions?

Still think this is MM's race to lose. Lorenzo looks much better this weekend and had enough pace to push MM to the wall in Q2.

I'm thinking MM, JL, and I'm going to say Dovizioso who has done well here.

I'm playing it safe and predicting Marquez will win, with Lorenzo in 2nd if he doesn't jump the start. Rossi found a bunch of speed so that'll be nice to see him mixing it up at the front. Iannone could do well if he doesn't crash.

It'll take one heck of a mistake to make Marquez lose this race. He looks otherworldly on this track.

And the field will sleep a little easier tonight.
They'll still need a bit of Ambien. Alvarado Bautista is still gridding up.

1. Torpedo pit lane: check
2. Torpedo qualifying lane: check
3. Torpedo....
