MotoGP: 2015 Round 17 - Shell Malaysia Motorcycle Grand Prix (SPOILERS)

Good stuff gentz. Interesting to get such a diverse set of takes. Curious question for the forum, wondering, if Casey Stoner uttered the same accusations as Rossi has, what might be the reaction across the GP fandom?

I always took Casey at his word, meaning I think he rarely talked .... just to talk it. He said what he truly felt, and he earned that right to be outspoken by winning Championships. Remember when Crutchlow had a big mouth for a while? He came off looking like a fool because he's a no one.

So long story short, I would probably be more inclined to take it as factual if Stones said it. Rossi is full off ..... He's trying to anger the opposition.

"When you're angry, you do reckless things" - Bernard Hopkins - one of the great .... talker, cerebral assassins of all time!

First I want to start with that I will argue with anyone that Rossi is in the top 5 all time MotoGP riders. I will leave it to you if you think he is first or fifth, but anyone that has watched MotoGP can't honestly put him much lower than that. Maybe 7th for some..

Technical point only but in MotoGP he would have to be the best as his numbers are incomparable at this stage.

I do say technical point as the MotoGP came into being with the latter 4 stroke era and as such, any comparison of the top class of Motorcycle Grands Prix should not focus purely on the MotpGP era (and I am fully understanding that you are not doing so).

Within the larger capacity of Grands Prix racing he would have to be in the top 7 on an opinion based scheme and even I, as a non-fan of the personality happily admit that he is easily in the top 5 (Doohan, Rainey, Lawson and Spencer for company ............... note the bias)

Second, I think if anyone is under pressure, it is Rossi, and I completely understand why. Rossi is 36 years old, and yes, he has had a GREAT year, but he has to feel that his time is slipping away and this has to be his best and maybe last chance to get his 10th championship and tie the record for the most number of Moto wins. I personally, couldn't imagine the pressure he is going to wake up to Sunday. Knowing that he has 11 point lead, going into the last two races, KNOWING that he has only been the 3rd or 4th fastest bike on the track during the last 4 or 5 races. Knowing two 3rd's will probably lose him the championship.

Serious question for a second (and not nit picking) but when you say fastest do you mean outright speed or laptimes?

I ask as it is a popular argument at the moment and seems to be evenly split with some being peeved at the top speed factor and overlooking that lap times are the be all and end all determining factor of speed. Not trying to pick a fight but genuine question as your post is not that of a 'Rossi bopper' so looking for an open opinion.

As for the rest regarding the pressure, I do wonder how much is self imposed as you suggest and I do believe that this self pressure has led to the petulance we have seen, read and heard.

But I also wonder if the fact that he has never won a championship where he had not wrapped it up with one race to go may be feeding a little self doubt?

Or for mine, how much is the fact that he is now competing with 3 or 4 others at this time of year (that being those riders all can influence the championship) may have upset as usually in the past, it has been one rider only that was comparable.

Lastly, if you are going to be the 3rd or 4th fastest bike on the track, and needed to finish within 1 spot of the guy in second place to ensure you win the championship, what would you say or do to make sure that happens?? If running my mouth to the guy that has a 90% chance to either finish 1st or 2nd, increases the chance of him finishing 1st and not being between me and the guy I have to finish within one spot of.. Well, I would say anything I needed to. The smack I would talk would be epic..

I would not be publically claiming as he has but seeking team answers.

The manner in which he has made the statements is very un-Rossi like which is what I feel has bought the discussion more than what he said.

That is all Rossi did. Rossi implanted the fact in MM head that he doesn't want to look like he effected the championship to the masses. Now MM is going to be more likely let them race. YES, he is going to race his balls off to win. BUT, but, is he going to race the same all out for 2nd or 3rd.. I don't think so

Rossi didn't do anything I would not have done to win a championship.

I personally thought that MM was 'gentle' at PI compared to past events as generally he would have no thought to a 'barge pass' but he was clearly not going to do that at MG on the last lap, so to me MM had already decided that he did not want his mistake impacting the title.

Rossi's comments still strike me as outrightly petulant and childish (much like 'but mum, he didnt play the way I wanted' and they may well cause MM to play harsher or quite simply ride over the top and crash (as if to say to Rossi, here you go, FU mate, this is me riding hard'

To me Rossi has done a lot different to the way I would have acted in the same situation (and I cannot even dream of being in that situation) but for me, I would like to think that I would have shut up and worked with my team to go on track and win that way.

After all, the ........ stops when the flag drops

That all said, I will defend the right to Rossi to say this kind of stuff anytime as I have no issues with riders making comments of this nature.

BTW, as Jums has alluded, a very good open and fair post so please do not read mine as thinking you a bopper :)

For me, I'm astonished how this grotesque whine has played out and more fascinating is how he's not only got a pass, but rather its been perceived as this mastermind gamesmanship (frankly in all the years I've been watching I cannot remember anything similar, Arrabi has been eerily silent, but I'd wonder if he remembers anything like this).

I also estimate that if Casey Stoner did this he'd already be hung and quartered (keep in mind, this wasn't a comment after the heat of battle, this is something that has simmered in the convoluted mind of VR enough for him to print out charts and write out notes, etc. Its like he's gone mad, but with the comfort that no matter how insane he gets many would nod their heads in admiration like, wow, this guy is a mensa mastermind genius. That's of course my opinion (which I've shat all over the place).

I agree WVM. The Rossi that showed up to the press conference isn't the same guy. His face; it didn't even look like him. Like Sparrows said, he looked blazed, haha. Rossi on camera is this jovial dude. Not right now. He looks deeply troubled; stressed.

He seriously did not look like the Rossi of years past and looked dishevelled and unprepared (which of course is in direct contrast as he was very prepared)

No BS here (BS being ........, not Ben Spies) but I am seriously blown away by his look at that conference

Rossi buzzing Lorenzo's Tower probably appeared more dangerous then it actually was. He's being a .... right now, clearly. It was also clear by Lorenzo's reaction that Rossi achieved the desired effect.

May be a bit lost in translation but I read Lorenzo's reaction as not being impacted or having been affected at all by Rossi's buzzing

I basically saw Lorenzo's reaction (the shake of the head) more as saying '........' than anything else, and thinking '........' has never affected my preparations for my extremely low level sports.

Mind you I do wonder how it impacts the wider team (I suspect it doesn't but I wonder if further up people talk)

Jums, around the traps there are a lot, and I do mean a lot, not an exagerrated lot either, but a genuine lot of people who believe every word that has been uttered by Rossi regards PI and the allegations of MM playing to JL.

What has been said here thus far is tame compared to some places, and many of these places were not as 'yellow tinged' as previously

I guess the over-riding message has been successful .......... that being that JL and MM are now on the other side of the fence and join the likes of Biaggi, Gibernau, Stoner, Hayden (to a lesser degree but he did take Valentino's title), Pedrosa (lesser degree again). Now the job is for the Rossi fans (not the bike racing fans that support Rossi) to start heaping the pressure on to support their man.

But again, one must remember that whinging and whinging do not come in the colour yellow :D

Dare I suggest that if these forums are so excellent and have members with more balanced views it may be worth staying there and not allowing others to upset you by questioning Rossi as everytime there is criticism you seem to take a personal affront (yes, a bit pot and kettle there as I am much the same with some riders)

As for balanced views, well I do not like the Rossi persona and have never hidden that, nor tried to hide it but I do find many contributors here to be balanced in their views. Yes this place has a fair share of the 'tainted' or 'biased' views but ALL forums I am on have much the same demographic so if you have found one that does not display bias and is nothing but balanced, awesome, you never know I may already be there or find it and be there soon ;)

With regards to Rossi and his control, I stand by it. In years past he had a more controlled approach and let us be quite honest, in the Biaggi/Gibernau era he was vastly superior so was able to control fully the situation on track and with the media making the others the villains, he was in some way able to control off track as well. In these days there is not 1 but at least 3 or 4 others capable of getting in his way or upsetting his rhythym and as such, he has far less control of the situations today then in yesteryear

Rossi has NOT stated anywhere publically that I have read that Marquez applied 'dirty' tactics and as such I totally read these as your paraphrasing and thus your view.

I did read it, actually read it three times initially and then again just now, still read it exactly the same - you applied the word dirty to paraphrase your views of what Rossi was saying or alleging.

I do further notice that you have left alone the question as to why it is unfair (as claimed) when one rider (Marquez) does a Rossi on Rossi (stays back then runs off into the distance after entertaining himself as alleged to have occur). All good on that front as I will assume you do not see it as unfair (as I do not) and as such really, Rossi is being a sook.

As for the riders comment, both have vested interest to make such a comment.

Rossi for obvious reasons and Ianonne being firstly an Italian and secondly having just been defended by Rossi (rightly) from a range of vitriolic attacks against him by the rabid Rossi fans. Of course Ianonne will support Rossi but it does fly in the face a little of what was said after the race but yes, on watching maybe he got a different impression to that which he had on track

Either way, there are no rules that stipulate that any alleged actions of Marquez were against either the spirit or rules of the race ........ so all legal, above board which means that those complaining really need to build a bridge, suck it up etc

The practice start thing is a .... move ........... there was no need for it at all and really were it done by others I am sure that you would be leading the chorus demanding that they be fined/excluded or penalised in another way.

This year we have seen all sides of Rossi, the good, the indifferent, the happy, the pissed off and now the petulant.

I for one have always seen this and totally expect it from these guys as they are extremely tightly wound balls of intensity who need everything to be balanced and within their immediate control. Upset that applecart and the toys get thrown ............. the applecart has been upset, the dummy spat and the toys thrown.

May the better of the two win the championship and may it not be decided by rough or poor actions of either of the two combatants, and nor may it be decided by the actions of another.

Of course I disagree with all of this and what could either be called a master stroke or an abysmal failure of PR on Rossis part, we will see.

I bet now everyone is glued to their screens like never before, even for FP. Someone is certainly winning

I believe it was his speech to the Italian press where he used the dirty tricks line.
I would find it but I'm busy on other forums ;), this place is for pure entertainment value and .... stirring. It would be quite boring without all of you haters :)

Dude,

Seriously I think you need to find another sport to follow, because clearly you are really, really ...... up when it comes to Rossi, Dorna, Marc etc etc.
I think you would be much happier doing something else, because the odd time I come here now reading your .... is actually depressing and I feel sorry for you, go and play with your kids, enjoy the outdoors, maybe fishing?

Honestly I'm concerned for your well-being, someone shouldn't hate this much. Why do you watch the sport? Clearly anytime you see Rossi your blood must boil and its pretty hard to miss him whilst watching motogp.

This is just another .... around from VR, he's having a go and its created quite a storm. Jorge crapped on about bad luck costing him the title, Rossi is now having a go at Marc, its great! Drama buddy, lap it up and enjoy it-only I think you can't, time to lighten up bud and move on.

Nickys going to WSBK-maybe you might enjoy it over there a little more-forget Valentino Rossi-he's not worth it, they guy does not give the slightest flying .... about you or most of the others like us those who post dribble on forums and social media-as he said in the press conference today also.

I agree WVM. The Rossi that showed up to the press conference isn't the same guy. His face; it didn't even look like him. Like Sparrows said, he looked blazed, haha. Rossi on camera is this jovial dude. Not right now. He looks deeply troubled; stressed.

I have a slightly different view on his .... talking. In MMA/Boxing, fighters talk copious amounts of .... on one another, which puts the onus on said .... talker to actually back it up. I think Rossi is just trying to fire himself up even more.

Truth be told, it could backfire. Say this race plays out in a fashion which then requires Rossi to actually win the final race (a scenario which could indeed play out). Now he just stoked the Marquez flame to Chernobyl levels. Smooth move!

Rossi buzzing Lorenzo's Tower probably appeared more dangerous then it actually was. He's being a .... right now, clearly. It was also clear by Lorenzo's reaction that Rossi achieved the desired effect.

Conversely... it speaks to a certain desperation on his part which would inform Lorenzo as to Rossi's insecurity as regards his ability to outride Lorenzo which might in turn give Lorenzo the extra boost of confidence he might lack. Knowing his opponent is not above cheap childish attempts to unnerve him is very telling. Lorenzo's no dope. He knows that there's the bad luck that just happens and the kind of "luck" you make for yourself. He's suffered so much ........ at the hands of Rossi and at this stage, would take as much satisfaction from stealing away Rossi's last shot at a 10th championship as he would from winning this year's championship. Revenge can be a great motivator. IMHO - Lorenzo (despite becoming quite emotional at set-backs) is still very mentally tough. These last few races will be be challenging to both riders in equal parts. Everybody senses this. It's why these last few race threads have enjoyed so many interesting and intense posts.

Well, it's going to come down to another battle between MM and JL in the race I am sure.

I'd like for people to register their opinions since of course after the fact we will undoubtedly have pundits and spectators alike who will say, I knew it. If Rossi wins the title (for me an almost certainty) Rossi worship will go stratospheric (as if it could raise to a higher level of Jim-Jones-Crazy). It seems Rossi can say and do anything and it will not only be accepted (even among some skeptics like, yeah yeah, I think I see the brilliance if I squint my eyes enough) to outright, this guy is the Lord incarnate.

Mike, one of my first thoughts on the subject of Marc crashing was regarding this year's new tire. Im always acutely aware of tires because I've always felt its the single most factor among competitive machines that decides titles, and with ample precedent (SNS). I wholely rejected the "decline of the RCV" as the culprit. The crashes meant he pushed beyond the grip limits, rider error, and dovetails my suspicion regarding tires.

The issue I debated was not that Casey had inferior tires, but rather the suggestion that they were switched come race day. That didn't seem plausible. But now anything seems possible. If you recall I recently dug up and reminded Migs of the conspiracy Rossi alluded to that his tires (during the SNS Era no less) had been suddenly and inexplicably been odd and different for the Valencia 2006 showdown.

High risk gamble to give Rossi better consistency during a season? What? What was at risk? That Marc would dominate or Lorenzo would be faster? Uhm, this had been the case last two years. It was a no brainer to create a tire that suited Rossi. Hey guys, the most popular rider in the history of the universe will forever have highlights being shown on a continuous loop with BRIDGESTONES. In the absolute greatest ever comback story ever. Yeah, you're right, Bridgestone leaving and never having another 'golden' marketing opportunity present itself like this wouldn't have been attractive.

I don't think there was any tyre conspiracy against Stoner in 2006, other than the general conspiracy of SNS tyres only being provided to selected Michelin shod riders. His explanations in retrospect for what he perceived as a change in his bike's behaviour/performance between practice and race have been inconsistent to say the least. If this was a real phenomenon, it could possibly be related to the team not allowing a rookie rider to keep his own preferred settings, which when he got to Ducati were said to be extreme.

My "tyre conspiracy" was in relation to both the change to the control tyre in 2009 (and possible earlier changes in preparation for this in 2008 according to Lex's hypothesis, which I am inclined to think holds some water), and the mid-season change in 2012 which took away Stoner's preferred "hard" tyre. I don't think either of these changes was made purely to thwart Stoner, although I am sure any such effect would not have been unwelcome for Dorna.

My belief in regard to Bridgestone this year is that they have decided that Dorna can .... off and have tried to produce good tyres for everyone, and certainly for both Rossi and Lorenzo. I know Bridgestone are technical wizards, but producing 2 different tyres which suit both those riders but at the same time disadvantage Honda would seem to require fine tolerances. One of the most renowned long term Rossiboppers, advanced the opposite theory on another forum, that Bridgestone had plotted to advantage Lorenzo by giving him back his tyre in the hope he would set records that could not be matched when Michelin took over. My preferred explanation for MM not dominating this year is a combination of both your previous arguments concerning his arrogance, recklessness and inflexible approach (for most of the year if not at PI), as well as a decrease in his previous good luck as you have also said, and the Honda engineers overcooking the power delivery on the bike and not being able to change this under the current engine rules.

That's just it. So Lorenzo spent 3 seconds thinking, "........". That was 3 seconds of wasted time for prep right? Insignificant maybe, but you and i know Lorenzo has spent more than just those 3 seconds pondering Rossi and his antics. ...., we've all been thinking about it all day. It may prove to be nothing, but at least 50% of all sports is played between the ears. All it takes is a moment's worth of lost focus for something bad to happen. Or it could back fire as I've said, on Rossi.

It could be Rossi is just crying in the presser like a newborn who shat themselves, and we the fans are perceiving it as "Head Games". Then how does one explain the tower buzz? I think that proves Rossi is indeed not crying, but trying to .... with Lorenzo. Or some combination of the two.

Everyone's gotta admit that no matter how you see it, this has made for great theater!

Whatever. He will always be 9 and 3/4x champion and thats all that matter. We are in mondiluto territory now.

You know what I'm trying to say jumkie. Who made that .... up?
Mundialito. Thanx for reminding me. Who made this .... up? Answer : Valentino Rossi.

Mdub, what would have been your hilarious retort if Casey had done something like this? I want to have something in my back pocket incase this all blows up in Rossi's face. The irony being that if he does win, well this will forever not be considered a whinging ..... episode. Not that his fans see it as such now, hahaha...poor Talps, get ahold of yourself man.

For you I hope it is a masterstroke of genius and he is using the PR to motivate himself (but genuinely, why would he need that level of motivation) or simply now is concentrating having diverted attention away from what really was a relatively ordinary performance by his standards at PI (...., I tipped him to win as he usually owns that place - Stoner aside - go back and check if you doubt what I type)

I do enjoy your use of haters so frequently but pot, kettle and black comes to mind with your thoughts on other riders or businesses but hey, each their own with bias and interpretations of what is a good balanced debate versus what is filled with hatred and vitriol.

As for the dirty line, I have searched many forums (am in around 12) and not one has mentioned the word dirty but many forums and articles state that he used the word 'unfair' where for my interpretation there is a definite difference and belief anyway that neither occurred.

As for those other places, keep contributing and keep an open mind all around as not everyone may be out to 'besmirch Rossi' as much as some believe, but I do believe that people should be able to ask questions of his actions without it immediately meaning hatred of the person as sadly seems to be the way today (Rossi moreso at the moment as he is back at the top but definitely others in years past)

This is just another .... around from VR, he's having a go and its created quite a storm. Jorge crapped on about bad luck costing him the title, Rossi is now having a go at Marc, its great! Drama buddy, lap it up and enjoy it-only I think you can't, time to lighten up bud and move on.

Nickys going to WSBK-maybe you might enjoy it over there a little more-forget Valentino Rossi-he's not worth it, they guy does not give the slightest flying .... about you or most of the others like us those who post dribble on forums and social media-as he said in the press conference today also.[/B]

Methinks you may have meant this for someone else or forgot to change a few words for me :p

I don't disagree with anything you've said. His plan is childish, desperate, and could backfire. All of which makes Rossi look a goof!

- Thats why I said love it or hate it, it's good for the interest in the sport. FACT

Cool, was more a translation thing as I initially read it as the action sticking in JL's head.

Certainly it would be there for a few brief seconds but in the end, I reckon JL would not have thought that much of it.

I am just pissed that the camera followed him as from reports that was a bloody good wheelie by Jack

I don't think Rossi is assured of this title. Sunday will give us a good chance.

Personally I hope he doesn't win because of what the fan reaction is going to be. While Rossi raised the profile of MotoGP, he happens to also perfectly encapsulate everything wrong with MotoGP over the past decade.

Talpa, what other forums? Let me know so I can set them straight. (Surely not motomatters, certainly they wouldn't stand for such 'rider accusations', ah the irony. It burns!) Btw, for your sake if Rossi does lose, have an action contingency plan. Perhaps some valium at the ready.

If he wins i think that's the last we see of him in racing capacity... so there's that. I don't think it's a sure fire either. One can only assume AI, DP, MM, JL will all be strong during the race. All of which have gotten the better of VR recently.

As far as FP3 times Rossi was quoted as saying, "Fans, don't worry. I 'find something' on Sunday... A file marked 'JL Geometry', on the C-Drive of Massimo's laptop. New feel is, not so bad".
