2018 Gran Premio d'Italia Oakley

Doping test should be completed right after qualifying is completed. Marc may have gotten the 3rd sector wrong. But there is no way this frail anemic OLD scumbag, can perform at this level without enhancement drugs. This is one of those individuals Cal was talking about.

... K'know Hailwood was still hitting the podium at the 24 Of Le Mans at the age of 39. So, being competitive at that age is not really all that implausible. I've seen guys older than that beat the pants off of much younger riders at the local flat track races, not MotoGP I'll grant you, still.

Oh ....! How dare the 39 year old score a pole?
Doesn’t he know that he’s destroying the narrative?

Must be SNS tires...or Dorna holding back riders by remote....or...must have got special engine....

Love how quiet this place is and everyone vanish whenever Vale does anything positive.

Remind me again, how many points does one score for pole position?

Look how classy his fans are? Makes me want to follow him like never before mainly because of everything he does to stop things like this.

Fans (?)

Fans does not mean that the rider approves of the action.

Sure people can suspect as some do that Rossi may encourage some behaviours, but there is no way in god's earth that he would encourage that or find it funny. He has lost mates to racing and no matter what one thinks of Rossi, he is not about to enjoy such stupidity in his name.

Besides, there seems to be no 46 branding there so while it may be safe to assume, it is just that, an assumption that it is a Rossi person

Congratulations! You have finally figured out the difference between qualifying and race!

And yet we celebrate qualifying ......... why?

I can accept getting excited for riders who are usually at the tail end who get a good qualifying result, likewise disappointed for riders usually at the front end when they put in a bad result but I always find it interesting the celebration that comes before the main event.

It is somewhat akin to celebrating foreplay without the main show

Agreed, F1 as well. Nigel Mansell was 39 when he won his ‘92 title, then went to IndyCar and won in ‘93 at 40. Came back and raced until ‘95 when he was like 42. Raikkonen will be 39 in few months and no fitness issues. Or freaks like Bernard Hopkins.... dude schooled 29yo Jean Pascal at 46! It’s amazing and inspiring how fit some guys still are at that age.

It is only qualifying plus there are lots of people who remain competitive beyond what many call 'their years'.

IMO, I personally feel that many of these riders can continue on beyond what riders could 20 years ago due a lot to sports science and medical improvements (and no, not drugs but way to recover from injury).

What stops a rider is loss of desire or motivation and Rossi has lost no motivation as whilst we all joke about it, title 10 is a massive motivator for someone so driven as he knows what it means in so many ways. Is that his only motivator, no as he likely also enjoys battling the younger guys and I mean, name me one older person who does not enjoy beating the younger at times.

When one is motivated, and when one has desire and when one is enjoying it, results come.

Mansell won with a car that drove itself due to the active suspension. The FW-14B was a technological marvel, but it was the easiest title ever won in the 3.5L formula era of F1. Prost had to work harder for that '93 title than Mansell did in 1992.

In 1995 he couldn't even fit in the McLaren that had to be modified for him because he was too fat by that point. He only started in 2 races and had a 10th place finish and a DNF before getting the boot. Bernie wanted a name driver in F1 and brokered that McLaren deal since they were still reeling from Senna's death.

^ He was lil’ chubby in ‘95 lol, I remember the McLaren modifications. He was always a big dude. But come on, give him some credit. F1 title at 39 is pretty awesome even with such a great car

Sorry my browser wouldn’t let me quote JPS

Always makes me laugh how people celebrate pole position like they've already won the race and then they get into the first corner in fifth position and proceed to go backwards...

The long straight at Mugello can keep things bunched up and with this many bikes running so close this could be a 6-7 bike fight for the win . The key is not losing the draft, if you do you’re ....... Turn one has been problematic this weekend with the speeds we’ve seen, with this many contenders ,expect fire works as the 3-4-5-6 place bikes will be getting sucked in fast . This has the makings for a classic

Riding a full gp race does require significant endurance though.Rossi took up physical training as he got older having not bothered when he was a tyro.

How did Zarco qualify compared to the factory Yamahas?
Asking for a friend...

Zarco is really arriving in MotoGP, he bids fair to get on your list with MM, Lorenzo, Stoner et al.

It is vaguely possible that there are tracks which suit Valentino better than him or vice versa.

Few are arguing that Rossi is no good at age 39, just that he is sucking up the oxygen from the sport and fellow riders, and having him as the main focus of one of the two perennially contending teams at age 39 when he is unlikely to win another title is what is problematic.

It sounds like Michelin have dropped the ball on tyres again. If Lorenzo has to run the hard then you know there is a problem.

I will give it to Crafar. After that horrendous start, he has actually become rather enjoyable to listen to. I guess it was just nerves in the first couple of rounds.
