Gran Premio Motul de la República Argentina 2017

Oh lord, when i saw the tyre comment, i bought popcorn and here I am waiting for the forum field day to happen ;)

Link please.

Following the problems that several riders had with the front tyres during the MotoGP race at Brno last Sunday, Michelin will take a medium compound wet tyre to the next race at Silverstone.

Jorge Lorenzo, Andrea Dovizioso and his Ducati teammate Andrea Iannone, among others, saw how the front tyres could not withstand the overheating caused by an asphalt that dried up as the laps went by.

As a result, the rubber got detached from the carcass to a greater or lesser extent, which led to strong criticism from the riders.

Michelin understands why they are unhappy, but at the same time it points out that it was them who decided to use the softest front compound, based on three reasons that Piero Taramasso explained to Motorsport.com.

"Because in warm-up it had worked well, because it's not a good idea to race with a compound that has not been tested before, and because the majority thought the asphalt would dry up and that race would be a flag-to-flag," said the Italian.

"But during warm-up there was a lot more water on the track, and during the race it didn't dry up quick enough to make the slick worth using.

"At the same time, during the final laps the braking points were nearly all dry, and that made the front tyres start to suffer."

Dovizioso, who lost all the central tread of his tyre, said that the main problem was that the two rain tyre choices that French manufacturer offered were too far from each other in terms of stiffness, and he called for an intermediate version.

Taramasso confirmed this option exists, that it was tested at Sachsenring, and that it will be taken to Silverstone, where the next round of the championship will take place in two weeks.

"As we expect it to be colder there, we still don't know if we'll take only the soft and the medium, or all three of them. But for sure we are taking the medium one," concluded Taramasso.

What about that it was numerous riders from the FIRST paragraph?
In addition, it says that the option exists and was tested. Not that they were making it for Dovisioso. Terrible argument. I may become a Rossi-tire conspiracy proponent at this rate

Who said Michelin made a specifically tire for Dovi? Dovi called for an intermediate wet version and Michelin brought the one they had to the next race. But, if Rossi asks for a harder tire and Michelin brings one they already have, you have a problem?! You're just going to have to get over it or watch F1.

The lack of a middle option with the Michelin rain tires was a safety issue that affected everyone. It wasn't Dovi asking for it just to benefit him, it had a benefit up and down the grid.

The lack of a carcass that was stiff enough was something only Rossi was complaining about. No other rider has had complaints the way Rossi did about the flex of the 2017 Michelin carcass. And before you try and use the argument, in Rossi's case it was not a safety issue, it was an inability to effectively adapt to the characteristics of the 2017 front tire.

Don't try and conflate the two because the situations are entirely different.

That's odd... I recall Rossi starting 10th and finishing on the podium at Losail. Not bad for a guy that can't adapt.

What's to explain?
This tyre business is getting old. Every time there's a compound change this forum reverberates to the sound of foil hats in mass production.
Stop press... Michelin bring tyres for everyone!!!!
If I see nobody else using the tyres Rossi uses then I will join in.

Haven't seen the details of this. Michelin however historically very definitely didn't bring tyres for everyone, and while I believe in general they tried hard but were incompetent last year in their first year as a control tyre supllier what happened last year in regard to the tyre on which Lorenzo was dominant in early testing, or a replacement for it if there were safety concerns?

Problem with your line of thinking is that if it were as simple as him adapting, he wouldn't have been crying for Michelin to bring last year's spec front tire to Argentina. One exception does not make it a rule.

He knew the race was not going to be a repeatable experience for the future grands prix, hence the begging for last year's stiffer carcass. It was more down to how varied conditions were in Qatar.

Last year when Michelin brought tires to a round based on Dovi's recommendation the usual suspects here didn't have anything to say. The only rider they're ever focused on is Rossi.

Can't really comment about the Dovi thing without knowing the details, but in answer to your question possibly because there isn't a history spanning almost 2 decades as there is with Rossi of him pretty much always getting the tyres he wants, even if this involves an unprecedented change of tyre supplier after contracts have been signed by his team eventually culminating in the mandating of a control tyre, while there are several examples of other riders and teams having preferred tyres actually taken away from them. As I recall Stoner/Ducati even specifically asked to use a hard tyre from the previous season in 2008 and were rebuffed.

Whatever you have to tell yourself to sleep at night. Fact is he adapted at Losail with a tire he didn't like and to the tricky conditions. If there is a tire option that a rider feels will help them, of course they should ask for it. If they get it... great! If not, they'll have to work with what they have.

I don't have to tell myself anything to sleep at night. Again, if it was as simple as him adapting, he wouldn't have been crying for the 2016 spec carcass. Michelin granted him a particular request that would not have been given to any other rider currently on the grid.

By the way, I'll take your refusal to acknowledge what I said that Dovi's tire request was on safety grounds as tacit admission that you are in agreement on that subject.

You have no way of knowing that. Other riders could also prefer the old harder option, it's highly unlikely the Rossi will be the only one using it.

Dovi's tire request was based on him not wanting to use the hard wet because they hadn't raced with it yet so he felt stuck with soft wet even though the conditions weren't perfect for it. He wouldn't of had any prior race experience on the intermediate wets even if they were an option at Brno. He could've shredded an intermediate wet tire on a dry track as well, it's all a gamble and he knows it. No harm in him requesting a tire that he believes will help him.

I'm going to ask you a simple question. Think very carefully before you answer.

Is a tire delaminating a safety issue?

Also forgot to mention:

Mat Oxley wrote this...

Over the winter Michelin combined the 2017 profile with the 2016 carcass to create a front with more grip and less chatter. Everyone prefers this tyre, except Rossi.

I'll trust Oxley over you, thank you kindly.

Improper use of a soft wet tire is a safety issue. Does that answer your question? The soft wets have never delaminated when used in the conditions they are designed for.

I thought you despised Oxley? I guess you despise me even more! What do I win?

Well you just quoted something claiming the tires have been changed specifically to hurt Rossi, so I guess your Michelintino tire conspiracy has to be laid to rest.

This was totally disproved stop being a ........
