Yamaha in engine trouble

Why?

Honda finished last year with a fresh engine in the crate IIRC.
That what happens when your lead rider takes a vacation and pussyfoots the latter half of the season

Yamaha does dial the revs back quite a bit for the FP sessions.  Their riders are usually shifting in the low 15,... range, nearly 1500 RPM shy of redline.  I wouldn't be surprised if they drop a tooth or two from the rear sprocket as well, so as to preserve the rider's shift rhythm, and limit 6th gear revs.

 .
I think their best bet it to run an 10mm pump injector instead of the 8 and reduce the lobe arc on the crossplane. This would inject more fuel while reducing crank friction and drag at higher rpms

Yeah that is just what I remembered after hitting the post button last night. ;)

Did Dani use all his last year?

I have no objection to casual trolling, but could you please try to make yours a little less lame?

Whatever Casey Stoner did or didn't do, the engine limitation is specific to the individual rider rather than the team as a whole, transferred to the replacement rider in  the event of injury. Dani contested every race, although he obviously didn't complete 2 of them, and didn't use up his allocation cf Lyria's later post.

I believe I read that his team ended the season with one engine still in the crate.

Just for clarification: Have the Yam boys 'put miles on' four engines or 'finished' four (respectively 3, as they are on #4 currently) engines?

This makes a huge difference and might be easily explained by following an approach of using different engines for different types of tracks, say engine #1 for tight tracks like Le Mans and Jerez, #2 for real fast ones like Mugello. In theory they might play have only two slightly differently tuned/designed engine versions for 'fast' or 'slow' tracks, makes #1 and #2, plus one respective engine for the actual spare bike, that being #3 and #4. #5 is for mere backup purposes or whatever.

Honda, on the other hand, might be using one identical type of engine for every track, thus they simply run the very same engine for successive races (say, 5 races per unit or so) plus one spare and one backup. Different strategies that is.

Rossi and Lorenzo have both had one engine WFA (Withdrawn From Allocation, which means they've broken the seals and can't use that engine any more. They have miles on three other engines. Crutchlow has miles on four of his engines.

Why don't they just rebuild the engines?

Just wait.  Rossi is currently deciding whether he will threaten to leave and go to F1, World Rally or Nascar to force Eze to bend the rules to allow him to do just that.

Assuming Yamaha broke the seals... to what end?

To get an idea of how it was running, (engine wear)

Or to see what went wrong so the guys back at the plant have some sort of idea where to start looking to prevent the same failure happening again?

I'd speculated it would be something of that nature - but as there were no engine failures (that I've heard of) it seems a drastic step to break the seals on two engines and have them therefore leave each rider with one less engine. Seems if there was a issue to be investigated - it would have made more sense to just open up one of Rossi's as he's not really in the running.

They have both thrown a bike into the gravel. Rossi more.

If it is a no go for any further purpose open it up and see how it has altered from original settings?

Just a hunch If you have a useless one crack it open and get the data?

All the teams perform frequent oil analysis using gas chromatography or similar tests.

Yamaha may have seen some extra, unwanted elements in the oil that suggested excessive wear was occurring

A big spike of copper, zinc, and lead might indicate a bearing insert is starting to wash away.

Chromium for rings or cylinder bore plating.

Iron if the cam lobes or main crank bearings are wearing too much.

Aluminum for piston skirts.

etc.

No VISIBLE engine failures. But those engines are both ....... They want to know why they went pop, and so have flown them back to Japan to have a poke around inside.
