Interesting interview just played on Australian FoxSports.

Jamie Whincup (V8 Driver) has said that when Stoner tested their car last year (Whincup is in the Vodaphone team) Stoner had told them that he had ha enough and 2012 would likely be his last year.

Hmmmm

I think some here (particularly Stoner fans) will enjoy Kropos write up on today's extremely shocking announcement (I laugh at those who said they were not surprised). Anyways, it read a bit like a guilt ridden eulogy, though that doesn't mean much of it was inaccurate.

Suppo is starting to look a little villainesque in the write up isn't he

so close to 20 mill for one season and he declines it?

found a whole new level of respect for stoner!

Rather a statement by honda if true, if he was really offered that sum in this economic climate. It would seem likely he crossed at least some cultural boundaries and met the criteria of hrc for bushido, reviled by some for weakness of character though he may be.

Just saw the press conference again. I'm a bit conflicted. I kind of felt both respect and pity for Stoner. I'd like to give him a big hug. (I'm not being funny).

Btw, reading a bit of Casey's defenders above, I think some of you have lost sight of what he is saying in your attempt to defend his decision. Trying to argue the particulars is where some of you are going wrong and just shows your tribalism rather than sound logic. It goes for some over the top detractors, Stoner decision has some merit. Its an emotional reaction all around. I think the best we can do is simply say, its his decision as its his life.

ffs jumkie, what is sports fandom about if not tribalism?

I agree he would have done better to leave any statements as to his resentments, petty or otherwise, until he actually had stopped riding (unless he was stopping immediately), or even forever. As you also say though, some of his over the top detractors are taking one of their few remaining avenues for detraction as well, and it is diverting to reply to them.

'MdubSTYLIE’ your words prove what an ..... you really are and don’t appreciate a champion! Now boofhead…let me tell you some truths about a man that has continually battled adversity and personalities and frictions with supporters of motogp and the opponents that he faced when he came into this sport…if you care to reconcile and look at the past Stoner came into motogp when motogp had some of the most talented riders in its history boofhead and so called fans like you who are just the adversaries of this sport and have no idea what it takes for a man of Stoners stature and talent to achieve what he has done throughout his carrier in motogp! Stoner is a legend and unfortunately for all of us it will take a very long time for us to see another rider of his stature behold our eyes and compete in motogp! Thank Casey for all the enjoyment that you have given me all the excitement thrills (especially on the GP7 which you rode to the limit) thank you thank you YOU ARE A LEGEND and I’ve been a fan and have watched this sport since 1975, THANK YOU CASEY YOU ARE ONE OF THE BEST AND THIS SPORT WILL NOT BE THE SAME WITHOUT YOU!!!

Says the person who only the other day stated Rainy was paralysed because he was not good enough. You are the ..... !

This is a huge blow for MotoGP. The best rider currently on the planet walks away from the elite level cos he doesn't like it anymore. But it gets worse.. Better get used to hearing that Spanish national anthem every single race next year, and the years to come. I know a lot of people dislike Casey, but let's be honest here - Casey is the only rider stopping that (Spanish domination) happening at the moment. When he is gone, MotoGp's status as the pinnacle of "international" bike racing will be made into a mockery. Who the hell (apart from the Spanish) will want to endure that every race for years to come?

Sad to see him go, but I can understand. He's a dad now. His focus on what's important will be different. He's reached the top. He's won 2 titles (one on a dog team that no-one else has or probably ever will win on again, and also a championaship on the best team - the same team as his idol, Mick Doohan). He may well finish with a third - the same as the great Wayne Rainy. The only difference is, Stoner will be able to, literally, walk away (no disrespect to Rainy intended). Another possible influencing factor was that last year he saw a talented young rider's life taken.

The sport is changing, and he aint happy with it. He has expressed this before. He hates all the obligations that go with the sport. He aint interested in all the wanky promo hype. He is a rider, a purest. I think the guy just wants to ride the fastest bikes against the fastest riders and be appreciated for it. But people slag him off. The media have dumped .... on him. Fans have dumped .... on him. He will never win with a lot of people. Maybe because he showed us that Rossi is human like the rest of us. And to many of us, he never kept his mouth shut and said what was diplomatic. It's a sad fact in this world that many people will buy the spin from a smiling and polished politician, and frown at the real who speak their mind.

I hope his last season is a triumphant one. Our great sport of motorcycle racing is not a personality contest. It is not a public speaking contest. It is a sport where only the fastest, most skillful, and bravest take the prize. In a modern hi-tech world of corporate sponsorship and regemented rider training programs, let's enjoy the rare gifts given to a young kid who grew up on a farm and worked his way up the hard way to conquer the world's best. Good luck Casey. And all the best for your future outside the sport.

very well said, although i don't hope he runs away with this years championship. i hope we'll see 15 repeats of catalunya 07 with lorenzo right in the mix .

He's not running from a challenge, he's retiring because, among other things, people said mean things about his lactose intolerance. To have even mentioned that in the press conference is completely nuts.

His racing and off-track behavior will be memorable; the former is impressive, the latter not so much.

Capirossi and Schwantz retired after finding that their best effort wasn't cutting it anymore. Bayliss announced his retirement without bitterness and complaints.

Damned if you - damned if you don't. Fans ..... and moaned about Stoner's lack of interaction with the public and now they want to ..... and moan because he cared what they thought. Picture what it would be like if you were a musician and at every gig you played you knew 65% of your audience hated your guts because you played better than the main act. I know if it were me - I'd be thinking... ".... these unappreciative pissants, I'm going home to bone my gorgeous wife and hunt with my bow and arrow in the wilderness."

"... this sport has changed a lot and it has changed to the point where I am not enjoying it. I don't have the passion for it and so at this time it's better if I retire now."

"Nobody else has enough respect for the people that do their jobs, working at the teams, working in the trucks, and putting this show on every week. It is not easy."

"You yourselves, the media, have not exactly been friendly to this championship and criticised me many times, especially recently."

"Everyone still to this day says it was a mystery illness – the fact that no one understands that I have a lactose intolerance, that is really critical to me."

Characterize it however you want, but he's leaving because he can't take it anymore.

There is a difference between "characterize" and distort. Get a dictionary. The fact that he took no pleasure from the sport - is not an indication of weakness. I don't take pleasure from eating chocolate icecream any more. Does that make me weak? I don't take pleasure listening to the crap on the radio that passes for music these days - so I don't listen to it. Does that make me weak? I quit smoking. Does that make me weak? ......... To deride a man because he has had the temerity to state a personal preference or a disagreement about the way the sport he's devoted his entire life to - is incredibly arrogant. Oooh! How dare he state his opinion? Since when is it a sports-crime to say what one thinks? This frat-boy, macho perception of manliness that says a real man should never have or express feelings, is such regressive neanderthal, anti-intellectual .........

Now excuse me I have to go out and club me a woman and ... her in a cave.

What haters really? The media? The message boards. How much of what is written on the internet spills over to real life.

I have my doubts that he experiences very little if any negative and hurtfull comments from fans or journalists in everyday life

I cant speak for GP in uncivilized countries like Spain and Italy but most GP weekends are a 3 day love affair from the fans.

Its not like a football or soccer match where the athletes are subject to brutal verbal attacks.

If hes letting internet ..... haters like my self get under his skin then surely he is weak minded

Flatter yourself much?

wow.. what a decision.. good for him i guess, but i'd probably milk some more money at least.. its not like he's got a billion in the bank, a few cameos and what not to make some ends at some point if he wants.. but like previously said, no limp.. no digits missing.. perfectly healthy and having accomplished what you set out to do, i suppose its a good decision.. this is a very risky sport, and if nothing else, he has enough money to invest in some business he likes and perhaps live off for good.. anyway, a true rider of everything they threw at him.. and definitely up there with the best in skill.. huge for him to leave

Hell... now that he doesn't have to be competitive he can even eat cottage cheese if he wants to.
<

Dub, the simple situation is that Stoner has made mention of numerous aspects to the racing, rules and formula and what he has felt to be poor decisions but each time he has been ignored by most and ridiculed as whinging by many,

Fact is, the decision makers do not listen so how can he make a difference?

Personaly, if (and this is a big if), if he is leaving because the sport is going against what he feels is a better way, than to me that is an amazingly brave (some will say idiotic) and principled decision and more power to him.

We all sit here and bemoan that DORNA do not listen, so who knows whether they may now start to wonder themselves WTF?

Nahhh. Why change now?
