Close the door behind you Casey

First MT1992 and now Stoner.

You Aussies are a bunch of ....... quitters

hahaha, what will the neo bobbers do now there god has chucked in the towel. In him prime too.

Seriously though, i wonder how much this has to do with his wife and baby. The loss of simo must have had an effect in reminding them of the stark reality of racing. There's nothing like having kids to remind you of your morality.

My speculation...

Honda demanded a 2 year contract to please its new sponsor Aon. This would allow Casey to be the "factory" rider (perhaps with a slower American teammate;), with Marquez and pedrobot as the repsol "satellite" team, circumventing the rookie rule and bringing in more money.

Casey balked. He was only gonna hang around until the rev limit rules et al. That makes 2013 his last year anyway. With Carmelo going nazi and Stacey Moaners' total domination, he probably doesn't see the point or have the desire to ride under stupid rules

Keshav and Barry synchronised suicide in 5, 4, 3.....

See yah around haters.

Obviously, it depends how they retire.

"Stoner... he rides like a God." Valentino Rossi

About now I'd say Stoner's retirement is looking a hell of a lot more appealing than Rossi's.

FFS what would Stoner have to do to gain your approval on his plan for living?

His comment on the lack of bikes for talented riders is in what way comparable to Marie Antoinette?

He is saying that it's sad that mismanagement of the sport and spiraling costs have left talented riders

with a proper bike. In what way does that relate to M.A.'s lack of empathy for the starving poor?

Obviously, it depends how they retire.

Why?

Was Capirossi mentally weak?

Was Schwantz?

Or Bayliss?

The manner of retirement does not determine mental toughness or lack thereof

You may feel that 'he is running from a challenge' (my paraphrase) and that is well and good, you are entitled to that, but I counter and say that he is walking away, pride intact and in a manner he has chosen at a time of his choosing. There is nothing mentally weak in that at all.

Once again the haters have shown their true colours - no one who has any love for the sport would be happy about this news of the best rider in the world retiring at such a young age....but I cant say I blame him.

Stoner has stated he is leaving because he doesnt like the direction the sport is going and is not excited by the future direction in which it heads....I completely agree with him (and suspect his detractors do aswell even tho they will never admit it). I admire the courage of his convictions to speak his mind and go against the grain - it is far easier to tell people exactly what they want to hear and play the "hero" in the stage managed pantomime that MotoGP has now become...to buck this trend and speak from the heart with your own version of the "truth" even when it is not palatable requires a boat load of intestinal and mental fortitude.

To those people that continue with this myth that Stoner is mentally weak ....I would love to see how these same detractors would handle the pressure of being MotoGP world champion.....I suspect they would fail dismally - most having actually never done anything noteworthy with their lives. The fact that since he entered the Premiere motorcycle championship he has been the most successful rider in the series is a testament to his phenomenal talent and mental toughness....Stoner has busted the GOAT myth and for that he will never be forgiven.

As always excellent posts from a few of the usual suspects (Keshav, POV, Gaz, Michael, Frizzle, Lex etc) are outweighed by the hateful rantings of the lunatic fringe....those who welcome Stoner retiring cant claim to be true fans of bike racing because today we lost the best rider of the current generation - a rider who was capable of extracting 100% from any bike he threw a leg over.

Thank you Casey for providing me with much enjoyment over the past few years - seeing you thrash that Ducati through turn 3 at Phillip was a thrill that will live with me forever and anyone who witnessed this live would never question Stoners bravery or mental fortitude. Good luck with this season and in whatever it is that you do in future.

You may feel that 'he is running from a challenge' (my paraphrase)

He's not running from a challenge, he's retiring because, among other things, people said mean things about his lactose intolerance. To have even mentioned that in the press conference is completely nuts.

His racing and off-track behavior will be memorable; the former is impressive, the latter not so much.

Capirossi and Schwantz retired after finding that their best effort wasn't cutting it anymore. Bayliss announced his retirement without bitterness and complaints.

...........Schwantz retired in tears citing injuries as his main reason for exiting the sport - he had recently suffered from many injuries including a fractured pelvis and had enough of screwing up his body. Please explain how this is "Mental toughness".....your full of it.

I am twisted on this. Of course I am sad to see him go. I respect that he is retiring at a young age. I respect that he is willing to give this all up. But I dont respect the reasons he gave for leaving. You let the haters get the best of you CS? Really? Or are they just the scapegoat.? Whatever the reason is you let the haters be proven right and you let down your fans not the haters. Every person at the top of any game get treated in such a manner. Love or hate. But its not that. Its about rivalry and us as fans(some) enjoy some insane sports banter. not just motogp but all sports and no one, I mean no one quits over it. Its truly sad and honestly I hope there is another reason the CS is not telling us, and I really dont care if he ever does tell us.

With that said, Casey is the only one that has the ability to turn motogp into what he wants it to be. He may not be the goat but all eyes and ears are on him at the moment. And if he was strong he would stick around and fight for the better of motogp. But that is not the road he is going to walk. Instead he chooses to turn his back on the sport that gave him everything, and to me it shows he is as weak as we the haters have always thought.

I know it's a rhetorical question, but I guess it doesn't hurt to repeat myself: Stoner is retiring because for emotional/mental/psychological reasons, he can't take it anymore. It's not because he wants to spend more time with his family, or because he has nothing left to prove.

And you know this how? Where did you get your qualification in psychiatry and when did you see him in consultation to make your psychiatric/psychological assessment?.

This is exactly the sort of cod psychological speculation repeatedly stated as fact concerning him that has helped disenchant him with the whole thing, imo.

Mentally weak people do not have dual 10 race winning premier class world championships, and nor are hrc noted sentimentalists prone to offering the mentally weak twice their existing multimillion dollar salary to continue. No-one can say that a rider with such a record is necessarily universally likable though, and if you don't like him that's fine.

If he gets the title this year He will be one of my big hero's. Imagine Casey with the title in his hand and an Eric Cartman (south Park) voice telling everyone in Motogp: " Screw you guys, I'm going home".

...........Schwantz retired in tears citing injuries as his main reason for exiting the sport - he had recently suffered from many injuries including a fractured pelvis and had enough of screwing up his body. Please explain how this is "Mental toughness".....your full of it.

Schwantz obviously had a bellyfull of injuries, but in the three rounds before he retired, he placed 5th, 4th and 6th -- not the results of someone who couldn't physically ride, but not the level he wanted to be at. His press conference did not contain complaints about the sport, it was about his lack of motivation, which was perfectly understandable given his injuries and seeing his arch-rival paralyzed.

Hey that would be cool in a way - but you know what ? here's another spin no one has brought up or maybe I'm just dreaming LOL :

Considering this annoucement is so early in the season (not the norm) what IF Team Stoner has thrown out the bait for a shed load of more $$$$$$$$$$$$ to be offered ?

Even with everything that has been said via CS at his press conference don't you think between the family discussion/s it would be mentioned "what if I'm offered so much for just one season ?" hey come on shoot me BUT this could happen - Honda wanted 2yrs right, maybe they will accept 1 or the coup de grace Yama offer him a late night trailor deal ala VR long ago just imagine LOL.......

No surprises there.

Beats me how he is racing even this year since the baby arrived.

He has been preparing for this for some time. Some of the preps are hard to see, but it was all laid out there for all to see.

Hence why i had to declare him the GOAT befoe he just accumulated wc's
The only person in the MGP world that KNEW this was coming... You are special

we are the most productive nation on the planet

Winning 2 of 3 races thus far this year and leading the championship rather suggests he can take it, and he in fact has taken it these several years and emerged somewhat triumphant on most criteria. Whether he wants to continue to take it might be a more legitimate question, and is surely a matter for him alone.

You guys now seem to be trying to claim credit for driving him out of the sport, rather the last resort of the desperate devoid of other straws to cling to I would have thought.

Congratulations on avoiding my question and twisting the facts to suit your own argument....I will ask one more time but in all honesty I expect more psychobabble ........ and posturing....SO!

How is retiring from injuries showing mental toughness?

FTE - Krop has said that Honda have offered twice the existing salary plus.

Money is not the thing

I thought he said it straight. He's sick of it.

I left my job when I was sick of it too. I don't think I was mentally weak. There were other jobs I wanted to try.

What haters really? The media? The message boards. How much of what is written on the internet spills over to real life.

I have my doubts that he experiences very little if any negative and hurtfull comments from fans or journalists in everyday life

I cant speak for GP in uncivilized countries like Spain and Italy but most GP weekends are a 3 day love affair from the fans.

Its not like a football or soccer match where the athletes are subject to brutal verbal attacks.

If hes letting internet ..... haters like my self get under his skin then surely he is weak minded

I don't think so . He is notably stubborn, and that the decision is premature is my only concern, as I doubt he will budge from his position.

That would be cool but Adriana sure is going to kick him right in his nuts for that decision. "honey how many times do we have to go through this?" (this is Adriana before kicking Stoner's ... at the family meeting) other than that I like it when athletes quit when their at the top, It shows a lot of power.
