I'd like for all the members who talked .... about Toni Elias in 2006 (who are still here) to denounce Rossi with the same vigor.
Won't happen. Why, you ask? Toni Elias doesn't spell his name V-a-l-e-n-t-i-n-o-R-o-s-s-i.
4 ducatis in the top 7 - will this ever happen again?
No.
Ride of the day goes to Pedrosa. Hayden lucky to get the podium, as it dried he slowed considerably. I expected such an outcome from Simoncelli, not from Spies. Disappointing. On to the fun part...
It was racing, that's true. It wasn't some out of control, reckless attempt like some claim. I'll defend Rossi to that end. But, he didn't have a chance of making that apex. I'm not saying it's a dirty trick or he's the only one to ever do it, but that's the reality of his attempt. Closing the amount of ground between Stoner and him in a single corner, in the wet and on a relatively unfamiliar motorcycle with a front end notoriously lacking front-end feel and susceptible to tucks no less, is a big, BIG ask for anyone. Even Rossi. I think it was unnecessary considering the 20-odd laps remaining. Asking for a suspension or a penalty is laughable, it's a racing incident. Saying Stoner is somehow at fault for attempting to continue at pace or for not getting out his Rossi's way? Just as laughable.
With regard to Stoner's applause from trackside and the apology after the race, it's all going to come down to who you support. Was Stoner's climbing of the fence and moving trackside to applaud Rossi during the race professional? No, but it was funny. Was Rossi's apology genuine? I think partially. I don't think he's some bunny-eating devil-man with no sympathy for anyone, I think he was going to apologize regardless. However, it's rather convenient a horde of his crew and photographers were there (but then again, when doesn't Rossi have such an entourage?). But I also don't think Stoner should be vilified for his response. He's been called a whiner in the past, and he didn't whine. He was sarcastic, sure, but at least he didn't whine. He put a smile on his face, shook Rossi's hand, and had a few less than genuine words. There are bigger tragedies, folks.
Each side is going to find bits to pick apart in Rossi and Stoner's demeanor to suit their own arguments. In the grand scheme of things, the points loss will hurt Stoner. But I think come the end of the season, the Stoner/HRC package will be able to overcome today. And Rossi took a top five, so that's a positive all things considered.
Also, hello to the good guys.
