Fitting that Marquez is breaking Giacomo Agostini's regards.  Doing it about in the same parity conditions.

I was thinking the same thing. the M1 and the Honda were much closer in terms of performance last year, but this year it's all HRC. Jorge rode a flawless race today, didn't put a wheel wrong, rode the absolute wheels off the bike and still finished third. He has zero shot at winning (unless it rains) because the Yam is so down on power on the Honda.

Marc will probably win the world title this year (the only way he loses it is if he gets injured), but I think the title is tarnished a bit by the disparity of performance between the Honda and the rest of the field. Right now, the only rider with any chance of beating Marc is Dani, and he just isn't in the same league.

Aleix E. must be one of the most over rated riders of all time. He's had 11 seasons and 140+ starts in GPs that he's converted into exactly 1 podium yet he's always perceived as being the next big thing.

The Yamaha is not down on power, they have plenty and fuel is not an issue. Rossi's best lap [ late in race ] was   less than a 1/10 of Pedrosa's race fast lap, and speeds were virtually identical.Early mistakes cost him 2nd place.

I disagree with this. JLo very badly wants to win; you could see the emotion in his face at the post-race conference when he finally made it back to the podium. This is just my opinion, but I believe he will switch manufacturers to beat Marc if he has to, the same way Barry Sheene changed manufacturers in order to beat Kenny Roberts.

Not sure I agree with the point that JLo isn't trying to change, either. He said after the race that he and the team need to work on the chassis and electronics (since those are the only areas where they can make improvements) and that he needs to improve as a rider. Again, this is a guy who very badly wants to win. The last few weeks, with the whole motorcycling world (including past champions) doubting his mental resolve, have probably been very hard for him to deal with, and he's shown real mental toughness by fighting back from it and getting the result he did.

As to the Yam being down on power, I go to the eye test for that. Lorenzo rode a flawless race. he got off to a great start, pushed hard, and built the biggest lead he could. In the end it didn't matter, as both Marc and Dani got by him by the end of the race. Getting beaten by Marquez is one thing; getting beaten by Dani is something else. Dani is not on the same level as Lorenzo, I think we can all agree on that, but yesterday it plain didn't matter. Last year, the machines were close enough to each other that the riders made the difference. This year, it's down to the bikes.

Dont forget that on occasion, the stars line up just right and Pedrosa beats everyone on the grid like a borrowed mule,  including Marquez and  Lorenzo Lets also not forget that 2 of the first 3 races this year were decidedly run on Honda centric tracks, and Lorenzo fell while leading on the one  track so far that was supposed to favor the Yamaha. To many unknowns to be making statements like Lorenzo has zero chances of winning a race unless it rains. I would be willing to make a large wager if you feel that strongly about it. Saying one thing and doing it are two totally different things. Lorenzo says he needs to improve, that doesnt mean he is willing to change. His style, is early brake, smooth corner entry, high corner speed. Marquez is the polar opposite. Late late braker, throw it into the corner any which freaky way he can and power out. Yamaha designed the bike to suit Lorenzo's style, problem is, there is a new style in town that is trumping his. He has to change, can he is the question. As far as him going to Honda, i still dont see it happening even if he wanted   to, unless he is willing to take a huge pay cut. It would be unprecedented to have 2 riders on one team eating up 25-30 million dollars of the budget. I think the only way Lorenzo ends up on a Repsol Honda next year is if either Marquez or Perdosa suffer career threatening injuries

1) Absolutely right: There are times when Dani is the fastest man on the track. The key words there, to quote your post, are "on occasion," and when "the stars line up just right". He is brilliant at times but has not been consistent. Jorge has, which is why I (and you, I bet) consider him the better rider.

2) This isn't a salary cap league. JLo doesn't have to take a pay cut to go to HRC, because HRC can pay whatever they want (and have the budget to do it). They offered Stoner a huge chunk of cash to ride in 2013, twice whatever he was making in 2012. From Honda's perspective, they would not only be securing the other best rider in the world (already having Marquez), but they would be taking away from Yamaha the only rider capable of challenging them. HRC is rutheless enough to do it.

3) This "new style" is trumping Lorenzo because of the tires. They perfectly suit MM's style, and hinder Lorenzo's. Not trying to put forward a conspiracy theory, just stating a fact. Marc rides the bike extremely hard, a style that meshes perfectly with Bridgestone's hard compound tires. When these new tires with more edge grip are revealed at Jerez, the gap may close just a bit. This is why it pays to be a whiner. Lorenzo complained, and BS made new tires as a result. You do what you have to do to win.

4) Given the current bike/tire combo, I think JLo's chances of winning come under three scenarios: rain, a mistake (or crash) by Marc, and Marc riding for the championship instead of wins. Towards the end of last year, Marc backed off challenging for wins, bagging points instead while cruising to a title. He may do the same this year.

These new tires are an interesting wrinkle. If they bring back Lorenzo's corner speed, then the gap between him and MM will close. I still think Lorenzo will be at a disadvantage, though. When you have two equal riders (which I believe Marc and JLo are), and they both ride a perfect race, then the better machine will win. The new tires may negate some of that advantage, but they won't eliminate it completely.

By the way, I'm not ignoring your offer of a wager. My assessment of the disparity of performance between the bikes is based on the current bike/tire combo. The new tires may change that equation.

Dr Kropovol. Where did you find the time to become a doctor, a professor, and a leading scientist in the field of climate change? .... Levi, your job may be in jeopardy, he may be flying airliners any day now.

I knew you loved doctors, doctor but I never knew you were one.

I want to thank you for clarifying the root cause why Lorenzo's terrible this year. If it wasn't for your doctorate in speculative psychiatry,we would've thought that Lorenzo has made some mistakes to start the season and is riding tires that he's not entirely happy with.

Instead because of your psychiatric insight we learn that Lorenzo is a quivering mess. Judging by your inferences to his mental state he must be walking around attached to an IV of Clonozepan. That amazing that you have come to this conclusion devoid of any facts to back it up.

I thought psychiatrists make their diagnosis of mental conditions from on the couch. I have to admit I've never heard of one who could makes his diagnosis from the couch. That's quite a feat.

I must remind you Dr. Kropovol That you may be forgetting that Lorenzo faced an opponent his entire career who was as fast as Marquez And never lost his composure Actually I know you have not forgotten judging by your monthly thread about Stoners return to GP. You have masturbated frequently fantasizing about Marquez racing Stoner. So you have recognized the two as an equal but somehow you believe Marquez has done something Stoner could not, which is make Lorenzo huddle in a corner stuck in the fetal position.

If anything is making him a basket case it would be watching the Honda effortlessly buzz by him, at warp speed

Thats champagne comedy right there.....cudos :winkiss:

Both POV and Rez do make good points however....to me JLo definitely seems flustered at the moment. Can he turn it around? We will see.

As for this best bike ............impossible to say what is definitively the "best bike" as there are just too many variables to take into account. Unless we have consensus from at least three different riders of the highest calibre rating these bikes from a number of very different circuits I dont buy it for one minute....remember 2007? Name me one other rider on the grid that year that could have won the title....I dare you.

What I will say is that from the comfort of my couch the Hondas seem to be better at fuel consumption and power delivery/acceleration out of corners - but maybe that is just due to Marquez having a style that suits that combination of motorcycle/tires in much the same way Stoner gelled with the 2007 Duc/Bridgestones.

Anyway kids a freak....its going to take a monumental effort to overcome his obvious riding superiority and the sky high confidence he currently enjoys. If anyone can its Lorenzo but I dont see it happening unless MM suffers from a self induced injury...lady luck has been smiling on Marquez so far in his career in the premiere class but that can quickly turn around as has been demonstrated in this sport time and time again.

We're hiring pilots now.  All you need is 10 internal rec's and a lunar landing!  Pov could make the cut perhaps?

Well, I think your job is clearly not in jeopardy from Prof. Dr. Pov's exploits, however BM should look over his shoulder.  Sure BM is in charge of NORAD, but Prof. Dr. Pov is now telepathically transmitting posts to friends, while diagnosing psychiatric conditions on riders...all the while conducting popularity experiments here on Powerslide.  Prof. Dr. Pov is the sole indicator of popularity, given of course he is the sole generator of threads proving once and for all, that what he creates as a thread is in fact popular.

I never made it past the highlight....

Pov, I like your stuff here generally and I agree with much of it, but I find it hard to believe that you truly do not consider the Yam down on power to the Honda.  It's been written about in several places by reputable folks.   It's also clearly evident to anyone paying attention.

If there power delivery or setup is hindering them, that is one thing, but physics will tell you that if weight, CD, and frontal area is the same, {while

not exact between Honda and Yamaha but close enough}  the HP needed to propel said object to damn near indentical speeds  in the same space, is going to be really damn close.

I don't think it's a question of top end, either. Power delivery seems to be the issue. Either the traction control is cutting in because the Yam doesn't have the grip to accelerate out of corners, or the engine itself is slightly restricted in order to save fuel. If it's the former, then the new tires may help.

Then we can agree that the bike is not down on power, which was my point all along. Bottom line is , fastest lap of the race was less than a 1/10 between the 2 manufacturers and speeds were identical. That does not constitute  a huge gulf in performance between the 2.

Nuances have never been your strong suit. Maybe its because it hasnt appeared in an official Dorna/HRC press release. But most of us paying attention have surmised the RCV has an overall superior performance advantage to the M1s. The gap between the two has widened from last year. But you haven't noticed.

What is the level of risk u estimate the factory M1 riders must take to keep up with factory RCVs? Consider the implication of my previous question and its answer (if you can). You diagnose Jlo mentally crumbling under pressure because u viewed a Fox style produced video from some MurderMac bopper (probably commissioned from the Kropaganda media department) splicing clips that attempt to depict Lorenzo in a bad light. A video btw with the subtle editing quality of a high school project (perhaps why u were fooled).

The effects of fuel are plentiful but nuanced. You have so far failed to understand how restriction through regulation have influenced parity. This despite the big rulebook shuffle days/hours before the season started was an issue of fuel allowed for prototype bikes and how this might effect the parity! (You must have missed the actual point of the new last minute regulations). I suppose you wont quite comprehend it all of a sudden. But try and think of the implications of why Jlo was denied the opportunity to test Alesh's M1 under "open" class unrestricted fuel. How embarrassing if it was revealed that the fuel restrictions were having a significant impact on the overall performance of the factory machines when predictably he went significantly faster than Alesh.
