Stoner retiring in his prime is a great loss for the sport. He is the undisputed king as things stand and I think it will take away from the show. In 2014 whoever wins it will be tainted with the thought that there is a farmer in Australia who probably could have whipped his butt.
He didn't like the direction the sport was heading and this isn't a desk job. There is no sense in risking your life for something you don't love. If he retires with 3WC's, and a body that works I think he will have accomplished everything he set out to do. He owes us nothing.
I have nothing but respect for the guy and wish he'd stick around. But he doesn't return my calls.
Again, what ifs, I don't think whoever lifts the title next year will worry about that. Stoner has yet to win this years title, he could break his leg next week an do jack .... the rest of the year.
When Stoner retires, the race world will move on and he will be another former champ, the new champion will take his place at the end of 2013 (or 2012) and what ifs will mean .... all.
To be the best, you have to be racing, so an ex racer on a tractor is irrelevant.
