When Rossi dropped to third he put the hammer down and got second back and put a gap between himself and Hopkins so I wonder if he could have challenged Stoner more in the last laps had he not out-braked himself.

I thought Rossi in best case would finished in 3rd/4th, but his tires and bike top speed surprised me.
Why? You are going to say that knews Rossi's bike would increase 10 km/h, avoiding a very possible 3rd?

Nothing indicated that. Stoner continued to go fast to the end and Rossi only gained .8 after his mistake. If he could gain .8 a lap he might have been able to pass stoner.
