He was close man....did you or did you not see the lap times....this is a matter of mute point now, but looking back it was impressive there cool guy....

Well as a thread was started to give credit to what Rossi did i thought it was valid to mention that getting back on the bike is pretty standard (especially when you've kamikazed enough people to guarentee points) and that there are people who have done so with more successful results, like wins, podiums and fastest laps.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Arrabbiata1 @ Jun 29 2008, 05:58 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>Obviously even a transcendent talent such as Vale's is governed by good fortune. When a rider falls in some cicumstances the damage to the bike is too extensive to continue. We don't tend to see the scenaro you refer to that often, simply because Rossi rarely crashes out of races.

I believe in '06 (rossius annus horriblis), after the clash with Elias at the Jerez season opener, he finished the race minus a footpeg and still scored two points. Yesterday's ride with a snapped quickshifter lever was probably even more impressive.

He is a master at adapting and moderating his riding style in accordance with the prevailing conditions.

i think in 06 if rossi would have got back on the bike quicker it may well have got him more points and been one of the factors to him getting the championshipx

Yeah it might have but only a little bit......I think Rossi just made a mistake unfortunately at a crucial time....when he went down I think he knew it was over. Its sad though that we tend forget his amazing return to the top while being behind by over 50 pts at mid season only because it resulted in a defeat.....but that's racing.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Tom @ Jul 1 2008, 10:15 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>DeAngelis finished 2nd at Donnington after a fall last year, and Fonsi Nieto won the 02 Portuguese GP after crashing. They are impressive comebacks.

Troy Bayliss fell twice in 2002 WSBK Silverstone race 1 and still finished 4th, now that is an impressive comeback for sure.

Impressive. Also explains why he took 12 laps to come to terms with the bike after the crash before putting in competitive lap times.

BTW, thanks to michaelm for pointing out that I'd ...... up on the fastest laps for the race and they should have read

CS 01:36.738 lap 5
CE 01:37.034 lap 18
VR 01:37.173 lap 20
DP 01:37.208 lap 8

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (michaelm @ Jul 1 2008, 03:06 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>Rossi's fastest lap was actually faster than pedrosa's fastest lap.

I think as well as rossi working out how to ride his damaged bike, the yamaha gets faster towards the end of the race. Being faster at the end of the race has always been one of rossi's trademarks, but I think the way the bike is set up may contribute also, as the pattern was similar for lorenzo.

I think this will give rossi and lorenzo an advantage if there is ever a close race (I do say if). The hrc bikes definitely seem to get slower, possibly due to fuel problems as others have said. Stoner claimed post-race that he was in shape to break the lap record on the last lap had he been inclined to do so, but saying this or even believing it are different than actually doing it.
true but looking at his pace i would not have bet against it .

Maybe they should think about carbon fiber frame sliders to keep this from happening again

I was there, and it was. But the bike should have cut out when it was on its side in accordance with Superbike rules at the time..and it didn't. (I remember Vermeulen being docked points several years later at Ten Kate for not having the engine cut off switch enabled). The fact that this was ignored at Silverstone that year was nothing to do with it being a Ducati of course.

Do you also recall Whitam crashing the Belgarda Yam in WSS but winning the race when it was red flagged seconds afterwards and taken back a lap? His teamate Casoli binned it as well in what was appalling conditions.

Getting back on the bike for what?

Its extremely difficult now to catch the pack... even Rossi could only pick off a couple of the slower riders.

Thanks for the thanks but it was partly ego as I had said earlier that rossi was the third fastest rider on the day

. I find the lap analysis to be about the most worthwhile thing I get from my dorna subscription.

I tell you for what 5 points that's what! Rossi has lost a championship for the sake of a few points, the way this seasons going every point will count!

By the way did you see the pictures of his gear change lever? If he'd had one I'm sure he would have passed more riders.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Haga @ Jun 29 2008, 11:06 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>Troy Bayliss is another person who does this. Vale and Troy very, very rarely lose the rear end of the bike so when they do crash they lose the front, thus limiting the damage to the bike and giving the rider a chance to hold onto the clutch, it takes both skill and luck and as i'm sure we all know Bayliss and Rossi are two of the best riders in motorcycle racing history.

Not really.

Bayliss crash at Phillip Island this year, lost the rear, lost the rear at Miller as well. Rossi's lost the rear at Assen and Donington a few times and of course, Valencia.

It's not that they rarely lose the rear, they rarely crash at all so the crashes tend to be a mixture.

Phil.
