<{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>I think it's simply because he often crashes in apparently "stupid" ways, at low speeds, so the bike does not get too damaged. Then he goes into a rage over his own stupid mistake and pulls the bike up, starts it and finishes the race usually matching the lap times of the winner (but of course way behind). That's Rossi. He's lost a world title in that way...
Except in this case.
At the end of lap 1, Rossi was 29 seconds behind Stoner.
At the finish, Rossi was 59 seconds behind Stoner.
At the start of this race, Rossi, never the greatest of starters, knew that he had to be with Stoner and hope for a tow. But it never would have happened.
Stoner was too fast this race, as at Donnington.
Even if Rossi had made a good start, I think Stoner would have just ridden away from him.
edit to add.
I was a great Rossi fan, and still admire him for his riding and achievements, but being an Ozzie I am naturally going to support the Oz riders, which is easy to do when there is one so talented as Stoner.
So back in 2006 when I was feeling so sorry for Rossi with his bad luck, I was looking down the sheets and was mightily impressed by what Stoner was doing in his first season in the class.
I am not a fanboy or a hater. I just am in awe of the great skill of these top class rider.
So I even have some time for Pedrosa. He sure can move that Honda.
