Introduction
Assen is the only venue to have held a round of the Motorcycle World Championship every year since its creation in 1949. The circuit was purpose built for the Dutch TT in 1954, with previous events having been held on public roads. The track is narrow, with rapid changes in direction, and is fully surrounded by grass banks and grandstands, providing excellent viewing for the hundreds of thousands of fanatical spectators who are drawn to the most prestigious event in Dutch motorsport every year. A huge favorite with riders, Assen is well known for its festive and extravagant atmosphere. In 1999 the circuit was modified with a new grandstand, control tower, press centre and renovated boxes. Modifications to the Assen circuit over the winter of 2005/6 saw the length of the championship’s longest serving track cut from over 6km down to 4.555km/2.83miles.

Lorenzo
Marquez
Rossi
Pedrosa

I think Lorenzo will bounce back for a second time this week... It's sort of a Lorenzoesque track. Marquez is always guaranteed a top two position and it's a swap between pedrosa and rossi

Marquez shredded his tire last year. He will not make that mistake again.

If JL finds rubber to his liking then look out for the fireworks.

Dani has found some new life and he could surprise everyone.

Rossi has his number two spot to protect so he will be pushing.

What we need is for a couple of Ducs and a few Sats to get up front and stir things.

(Hint - time to break out those super softs Cal)

Does anyone know if you can park a motorhome at the track at Assen?
I want to leave tomorrow morning on a spur of the minute trip to see some awesome racing!!

Interesting second session....

Espagaro's top time is worthless considering the rest of this times...

Dan and JLo are looking very very consistent in the 1:34s....

Rossi is catching on.....and MM is looking ready to fight as always.

BT Sport announcers spent a fair bit of time talking about Nicky possibly going to WSBK (or even retiring) .... considering his performance today (up until the last lap) maybe Nicky should hang up his boots or go to the minor leagues....

Sure that can happen, but this one was more about luck. Who manged to squeeze in the first two laps, got a good spot. Not to mention that since everybody was so stressed, there were a few near colisions. I woul have thought that they restart the qualifying on wet tyres.

This is when the 15 minute qualifying format doesn't work and is potentially dangerous, considering some of the crashes we've seen when the tyres aren't warmed up properly.

I seriously thought Marquez was about to be a human bowling ball when he decided to overtake half the field in Q2.... Surprised by how that turned out

MotoGP champion Marc Marquez decided second was enough during Friday's tricky qualifying session at Assen.

The Repsol Honda rider - seeking to extend his unbeaten 2014 run to eight in Saturday's race - had been quickest in final practice, but a rain shower at the start of Qualifying 2 threw the form book out of the window.

With most of the twelve riders charging out of pit lane together, Marquez carved his way through the group before backing off once a front row start was secure.

“I'm really happy with this front row because in qualifying it was quite dangerous and quite easy to do some mistake and be injured,” said Marquez. “My target was to finish on the front row and when I did the lap and saw I was in second, I thought 'okay no need to take more risks'.

“Maybe I was able to go a little bit faster but it was too much risk. I saw Aleix [Espargaro] was first and that the main opponents, like Valentino and Lorenzo, were at the back, so for me it was enough.

“I'm really happy for tomorrow and I hope for a dry race because we have a really good pace.”

Asked about the close moment with Pol Espargaro while elbowing his way through the field, Marquez said:

“I tried to overtake six or seven riders in one lap because I knew it was maybe the only lap in dry conditions so for that reason I was pushing. Of course one [overtake] with Pol was a little bit close but the others I didn't take a lot of risk. For me there was more risk on the second lap when it was raining more.”

Looking ahead to the race, Marquez admitted rain would be a major unknown, with no real wet laps so far this season.

“The two biggest things here are that the weather changes very quickly - it's so difficult to know what the forecast will be - but also the track is dries very quick.

“Since Motegi [2013] we didn't ride in the wet. We did two laps at the end of qualifying and the feeling was good but of course if it rains in the race it will be a question mark for everybody, especially for the life of the tyre.

“But it's the same for everybody so we need to manage the situation and try to think about the championship.”

Marquez holds a 58 point title lead over Yamaha's Valentino Rossi, who will start from twelfth.

I thought it worked perfectly well, the whole point was to give everyone a better chance to bump themselves up the start order....And the only way to do it is by taking chances and going for it within the very limited time.....
Jlo and Rossi will learn for the next race not to waste any time in Q2.
