tell that to the Ducati fans in WSBK this year.......they feel that eaventhough they have a few wins and podiums for season they are less competative than R L Hayden's bike!!!
there are a ton of if's that we can all rehash......if Elias did not beat Rossi to the line at Portugal, he would have had 5 more points/ if Edwards did not crash out of Assen, Hayden would have had 5 fewer points/ if Elias did not cause Rossi to crash at Jerez, I am sure he would have scored more points (probably won or podium)/ if Rossi's bike did not fail at Le Mans (was leading) and Laguna ( was holding 4th place with a few laps to go)/ if Rossi did not break his wrist I am sure he would have done better than 8th place (again probably win or podium)/ if Rossi's tire did not come apart at China he would probably had a top 5 finish. I think it is safe to say Rossi would have had over 300 points that season and the title.
If Hayden had been .736 faster at Mugello/ .901 faster at Qatar/ and 1.506 faster at China, he would have had 5 wins, an extra 19 points, and gotten less .... for only having 2 wins for his championship.
In the end Rossi and Capirossi had issues during the season costing them possible points and a possible title, while Hayden had little support if any from Honda that year and in the end earned the most points for the title
