That always makes me laugh - people that decry cannabis by saying it is nearly as bad as tobacco
<

Particularly when both are safe sacramental and medicinal herbs. Shame about the tobacco that is available to consumers, laced and poisoned.

Having been one of those professionals... sorry, you're wrong. For every bunch of junkies I have met, they are all different, just like everyone else in society.

In fact, alcoholics are particularly difficult to deal with. They are unashamed of their addiction, they will lie and cheat and steal and hurt everyone around them - sound familiar? No different to narcotics abusers.

I've never once met a lush, even when sober or 'recovered'

, who was willing to accept any shred of responsibility for the misery they have inflicted on family and friends. They wail and whine about their 'pain' as if their precious little life is somehow of-so-much-worse than everyone else's. What a bucket of crap. By specific intent a lush feels nothing - self-administering a chemical lobotomy is the whole point. No, it's the family that get to watch the debacle that shoulders the alchy's pain. During brief moments of sobriety, they like to babble about 'forgiveness' and 'healing' and a bunch of other BS buzzwords that have no meaning to them because they chose to deny the essence of their acts. Fuckers!

But, all of them are addicted - they weren't born that way - and if they want to, they can get off. The hardest part is getting them to break the pattern of association. If you can get them away from their social comfort zone you have a chance, but asking someone to give up family and friends is a big ask.

I feel rather strongly that booze is at least 50% a lifestyle choice.

This is a great thread! This is why I love powerslide. Great perspective from so many different vantage points. I even actually understood, and agree with, Lex's take!

What was also amusing was during the debate in the australian press about ben cousins the australian rules player it was discussed mainly in the process of condemning him for moral turpitude how professional football players were tending to take cocaine and amphetamines etc (not benign drugs imo and probably also yours) rather than using alcohol because this was less deleterious to their training and fitness

.

At the Vespa 24 hours I saw a rider from one of the many teams, after his first stint with atleast a 3 hour window till the next outing, twist up a pinny joint and order up a cerveza.

Classic scene- Leathers pulled off and down near his waist, under shirt soaked in sweat, dripping off the nose with beer in one hand and J in the other!!

That's pretty generalised. Every drunk is different... just as every person is different, but they do exhibit similar traits.

The worst thing about having someone that is an alcohol abuser in a group of drug abusers is that nine times out of ten, they will end up getting the drug abusers in the crap. They all go out, get pissed and from there, it is a really easy step to using again.

I hated having to look after drunks - I have no time for them at all.

Yeah, but it isn't always their lifestyle choice... sometimes they have had it thrust upon them.

Don't lose sight of the fact that drug and alcohol abusers tend to be stunted in their social development. They have never had to face up to theor reality - they piss it up the wall or shoot it in their arm.

Most of the time when an abuser wants to quit, it isn't necessarily that they have hit rock bottom as so many pithy pundits say, it is because they are sick and tired of behaving like children and want to grow up.

That's nothing new

We all raced like that back in the 70s... well, for some the beer was for afters.

I've never had an issue with people taking a relaxant...

When I was club racing in the '80s I hooked up with a couple of Irish racers and we used to travel

together in a caravan from race to race. I remember my pal Noel telling me that at his home track in

Ireland they had a full bar within the confines of the live paddock. In the USA if you were so much as

seen with a beer can in your hands while during the hours when practice or racing were going on

they would fine you and throw you out for the weekend. I never drank during the day but remember

a guy named Dave Roper who was a legendary vintage bike racer who high on weed 24-7 and he

rarely lost a race.

Thats more what I am getting to Keshav. In the US and I'm guessing Northern European countries you wouldn't get away with this at any race event. One German team I talked to they come down for the Vespa race because there is no stress from regulations.
