This is a nice little piece, worth a read. Rather then JB being booted out as the media would have, I think it's more of a  gentle nudge into retirement, maybe orchestrated by JB's wife..........guess we'll never really know. However I do think it was more amicable then the media would have us believe. It's all one big soap opera to them.

The

message below started as a tweet but as I was sitting at the bar the

evening we all found out Jeremy Burgess, crew chief for Valentino Rossi

and my boss, would be doing his last race I just started typing more on

my phone (turns out JB and the boys were at the bar across the road).

It's now become the first thing I've put on this blog.

Bike racing is a sport where you are never sure what will happen next,

on the track or in the garage. There is no script, nothing's definite.

The only certainty is it's real, as real as life can be. The highs are

so high that you can never get enough. The lows make your gut wrench and

you struggle to breath. But all of that is what makes your hair stand

on end. Real life can also cheat you, scare you and disappoint you.

In this sport everybody does whatever they can to scramble to the top

of the pile. Whatever it takes. JB knows that better than anyone I know.

I have worked beside him for my whole 21 years in road racing. He has

had more highs than any person in this game. He has taught me everything

I know about racing and a million other things - he has probably

forgotten more than I will ever know.

He will leave this sport with the most GP wins of any mechanic in history, and with his head held high.

Racing has many benefits but it also has many costs you cannot escape.

One is the cost to your family. Now JB will be able to stop paying that

price and his girls, wife, dog and his garage will all be happy to see

him.

Most people in this paddock don't really know him that well.

I know him, and if you knew him you too would be sad to see him move on

but you would be happy you knew him, had met him, or even been yelled

at by him.

Many people in this paddock

don't know why they do certain procedures or how things became the way

they are. They might say "oh well that's how we have always done it!"

but they don't realize that that's how JB wanted it done and his riders

and team were winning so everyone started to take notice of what he was

saying and then implement it.

When I

started everyone came to work at all sorts of times and warmed the bikes

up any old time it seemed. Jb always wanted us at the track two hours

before practice to warm the bikes up just incase there was a problem. He

said in the worst case we still had time to change an engine before

first practice. ( it happened only a few times but it happened! ) Now

pretty much every MotoGP team warms their bikes up in a 15min window

from 8am.

I guess its up to us, the

people that knew him well, to pass on the paddock history to the new

guys in the same way JB told us story after story about Isle of Man TTs,

Suzuki UK, Freddie, Kevin, MR, John Brown, Barry, Wayne, Frank Spencer,

Mick Smith, Eddie, George, filthy Phil from Louisville, Daytona, Muma's

Bar, the log cabin, paddock lock downs, brown paper bags full of money,

girls, motorhomes...the list is so long you need to have spent 15hrs a

day with him for over 20 years just to hear 'em all.

I know I will share many more beers with him telling stories. It just won't be every day now.

I also know he will be having a beer on most race days watching us

carry on trying to make the Rider go around in circles faster than the

other riders. He may even cheer us on. That will make a change to the

all the times he yelled at us to do something better, faster or smarter!

I had a message to call a guy 22 years ago. I said "who is it?", my

boss at the time said, "Dunno! He said his name was Jerry Burgess".

Thanks mate for everything, but mostly thanks for that call. AB

Maybe more amicable that the media portray but not a lot i suspect. I say this because of Lin Jarvis comments in the Euro commentary box at Valencia. To paraphrase here Lin said "it came as a complete surprise and shock to us at Yamaha and i'm sure it will cause us problems next season. Everything around the team was geared up with Jerry in mind, but now he has gone".  He went on to suggest the Crew Chief hiring and firing is more the Riders choice than Yamaha and it were down to them they would not be making such a change.

That's not to say tho that Jerrys age and family issues were not a consideration in having him replaced. Rossi did say he is like family, so will know more about JB's personal family stuff than most media outlets.

I've just seen Pigeon has already posted this link in another thread, sorry about that, but there's just to much to read through, if I read everything I missed I would post until the new year! lol

I am rather hoping that JB might get together with Matt Robberts and write his Auto-biography. That is a book I would like to read.

You could have said that over tea ;)

I am in Chopper's camp on this one. I think JB was kicked in the teeth by Rossi - who didn't know who he was going to replace JB with, but just happened to come up with someone in 3 days - and what you are seeing from Alex Briggs is the reaction to JB's leaving, without any mention or influence of Rossi, from the people that loved JB as a friend, mentor, leader. I think the complete absence of any mention of Rossi (other than the description that JB was Rossi's crew chief) is not casual indifference. I think it is absolutely deliberate.

I wonder how many of Rossi's crew are going to walk?

Because, let's face it, the Primrose Punchinello got his media dollars worth out of this one. It would have been simplicity itself to wait three days and have a quiet word over the contract renewal. Give him the winter testing programme time to hand over to the incoming boss.

But no, instead it was better to publicly go - 'Sorry mate, Sunday's your last day, it's been good. Ciao.' - apparently because some low-life journalist scum leaked the news. But how did that low-life journalist scum GET the news? Who told him? Radio Tavulia? I'm guessing someone not 100 miles away from the Citrine Coxcomb did the leaking and conveniently gave him someone else to blame for forcing his hand... just in time to get the new crew chief in place for Monday morning.

Because, it would look a little bad, no? If after the flag on Sunday they didn't all have their typical season-end party, followed by the planning for the test series and over-the-break holiday plans, to fire the guy that was planning the next attack in the battle to beat the hordes from HRC. The guy that had given you every win you ever had in the senior class. How could he have fired him on Sunday and had the new guy in the garage monday morning? It would look a lot like sleeping with two girls at the same time... or, Machiavellian machinations by Rossi, his Brute moment as he stabbed Burgess in the back.

But it's so much better if it is done for Burgess' benfit, that the Craven Citrine is seen as being the saviour of Jerry's feelings after some dirty low-life threatened the peace and stability of the Casa Citron.

I call ........ on that one. It was nothing more than the callous manoeuvres of a coward that couldn't make the right decision and do it in the right way. And Yamaha management are just as complicit - they are hiding behind a 'not my employee' stance.

For me, Rossi has tainted himself irreparably and forever. He could start handing out his millions to help all the poor and indigent in Italy till he runs dry and I will remember, just like I remember the Chappell brothers, this dirty little piece of business.

Really, that is what you drew from that  Kiddy K pretty much summed up the situation. ,Rossi is a conniving coward and i hope 2014 is the most miserable year of his racing life, forcing him to retire before facing the public humiliation of being shitcanned. What he did to Burgess shows his true colors. Yellow is a good color for him.

Ummm, i'm not sure we are in the same camp . I am actually still quite opened minded as my post would suggest. Where as you seen to have already judged and passed sentence.

People like Briggs are so deeply involved in the farce called WWF-MotoGP they don't even realize it's all staged, poor things. :)

Always makes me laugh when you spew the hate on Rossi. Just reminds me of your first ever PS post where you tell us you like Rossi and capi.

Haha Povol

You used to show Rossi some Good Vibrations and now you dislike him.

You sure Get Around.

God Only Knows why you have reversed your opinion of him.

Wouldnt It be Nice if we could get an answer. Dont Worry Baby, you can tell us. We wont judge.

If he was riding a Little Honda would you feel the same way? We know you love Hondas.

Anyway at his pace he wont be around Forever

Somehow - can't picture you as a Beachboys fan. Tho they're funny that way. If you're of a certain generation - like me - you love them in spite of yourself.
