Gigi seems almost resigned to the possibility of losing Pramac.

I don’t know how chummy the Nietos are, but the rumors are that after spending many years as Ducati’s No1 customer team, Campinoti didn’t take VR46’s arrival and share of the limelight too well. Which is understandable, because they won the teams championship last year and Martin came very close to winning the big one himself.
Yes, what MM does and what Valentino does even in his retirement seems to have huge ramifications. Basically Ducati have lost two and perhaps 3 elite/race winning riders, and may lose a whole satellite team, to accommodate MM and VR46. I guess they knew what they were doing, and were inevitably going to lose at least one satellite team eventually, but riders of the quality of Martin and Bastianini are far from ubiquitous.

Without knowing the innerworkings of the Ducati and Pramac relationship, it does feel that Ducati were happy to let Pramac make the decision whether they would stay or not without trying overly hard to entice them to. VR46 will likely never be short of being able to fund their own riders and bikes, while it sounds like Pramac were going to have trouble if not fully supported by Ducati.
MM brings in $$$ if only sponsorship and with Audi tightening the belt, that money could be very important going forward for them. Not to mention his still existent talent.
As far as replacing Martin and Bastianini goes, they might not be dime a dozen riders but there is some good talent coming through the classes and they may believe (correctly or not) that their wins and strong recent results are because of the bike rather than because they are the best(ish) talents on the grid.

Sure, I would have hired MM as well and on the factory team if the factory team sponsors were worried about him winning on a GP25 at Gresini, and Audi also wanted him on the factory team, but was just emphasising if it was Gigi's call in the final analysis it was a rather major call.

Can someone please enlighten me? What does VR46 have to do with Pramac wanting to leave Ducati? Pramac are the No 1 satellite team and the only team who gets current spec bikes, so why would they feel slighted by the arrival of VR46?

We only have speculations to go by, but as of just a couple of months ago, Uccio (VR46 team principal) was making his intentions public that they want to be Ducati’s No1 team and having access to current year bikes. Not this year, but in the near future.

Add to the fact that Ducati has been accommodating VR46 to a greater degree than other non-Pramac teams in the past (eg Bez got the latest start device in the second half of 2023, as he was a championship contender), and you could see why Campinoti isn’t too amused, justifiable of otherwise.

Lastly, Ducati and Pramac are certainly not blind to the fact that VR46 arguably has their long term funding secured- more so than any other satellite team- owing to the association to the person the team is named after, and that they have a talent pipeline in place (The Academy), which Pramac does not.

Pretty much my view. I guess Pramac could have the 2 factory bikes for the next 2 years if they can afford them, but if VR46 see their future as being with Ducati long term as seems to be the case I could understand Pramac not betting on being the premier Ducati satellite team long term. The whole Pramac to Yamaha thing arises as far as I can tell because those running VR46 did not take the Yamaha option as everyone including Yamaha and possibly Valentino himself expected would eventuate.

I think there are additional commercials at play here than most realize.

Currently, Yamaha is sponsoring the bikes the VR46 academy uses for off road and flat tracking training- and get a fair bit of exposure out of it.

With Ducati now having an off road division, this has no doubt been something they’ve looked into as part of their promotional plan. Especially as it is their home market.

What knockdown effects it will have on Rossi’s personal relationship with Yamaha, we’ll have to wait and see.

If Pramac goes to Yamaha then what would be the bike split?
1;
Factory Ducati GP25*2
VR46 GP25*1 + GP24*1
Gresini GP24*2

2;
Factory Ducati GP25*2
VR46 GP25*2
Gresini GP24*2

3;
Factory Ducati GP25*2
VR46 GP25*1 + GP24*1
Gresini GP25*1 + GP24*1

4. (unlikely but was like this in the past with 3 teams)
Factory Ducati GP25*2
VR46 GP24*2
Gresini GP23*2

I suspect option 2 is most likely. Option 4. would only happen if Audi have clamped down on the $$$ big time.

I see Miller as taken up due to having the right experience in the right teams to make a good developer

Hope DiGi gets a ride

Option 2 is most likely to me as well.
Gresini can’t afford a current gen bike, so option 3 is out.

It will have no effect, Yamaha have their head so far up his hind end that it's hard to see where he ends, and they begin.

I suspect option 2 also, mainly because Gresini's current contract runs to end of 2025 and that contract is for yr old bikes.

So:
VR46
Morbidelli (GP25)
? (GP25)

Gresini
Marquez (GP24)
Aldeguer (GP24)
