I don't know what the rule of thumb is on this kind of thing, but it seems strange that he would announce it so early in the season.

Guess it's too big a decision to keep internalized for all that time. I imagine it will be kind of weird competing over the balance of

the season with that knowledge in the back of his mind. Got to respect a guy who sticks to his principles. He's done what he set

out to do.

What's going to happen to BM now with this news?

hahaha, what will the neo bobbers do now there god has chucked in the towel. In him prime too.

Seriously though, i wonder how much this has to do with his wife and baby. The loss of simo must have had an effect in reminding them of the stark reality of racing. There's nothing like having kids to remind you of your morality.

My speculation...

Honda demanded a 2 year contract to please its new sponsor Aon. This would allow Casey to be the "factory" rider (perhaps with a slower American teammate;), with Marquez and pedrobot as the repsol "satellite" team, circumventing the rookie rule and bringing in more money.

Casey balked. He was only gonna hang around until the rev limit rules et al. That makes 2013 his last year anyway. With Carmelo going nazi and Stacey Moaners' total domination, he probably doesn't see the point or have the desire to ride under stupid rules

Chucked in the towel? Or kicked ... and quietly walked off into the sunset to have a great life hunting, fishing and doing the misses?

You make it sound like he walked away from a bar fight at the pub. The guys is a multiple time world champ, with millions of Euros in the bank and a hot wife and cute kid.

He announced it at the Press conference at Le Mans... Sounds pretty official.

If that decision sticks, let's enjoy him for the remaining 15 races. because riders like this are not born very often.

This is shocking news, I would never believe these rumours were true. It's sad for the fans of sport, but I think it's good for him. He has proved that he's one of the greatest of this sport and now can do whatever he wants.

Wow Wow and wow!!!!

I hope he changes his opinion and stay at least 2 more yeas. He denied this a few weeks ago and now this? Why? is it only because of the new rules. He will be missed a lot! But if he indeed stops i wish him all the best and wish him the best times in fishing, i wish i was able to go fishing for the rest of my life. That's the best thing there is.

yes, his riding totally shows that hes terrified of these machines oO

i totally respect his decision, most great champs retire with broken bodies. as a fan of the sport and spectacular riding i can't help being a bit disappointed though that one of the all time greats quits right in his prime.well, at least pedrosa now has a good chance of becoming WC.

Good on him. I particularly like the reasons he's given.

Champagne tonight in France courtesy of Jorge and Valentino.

The guys got serious psychological problems. Hes the first self hating athlete in the history of athletes. Ive never seen such an accomplished athlete with less passion.

Riding off into the sunset seems like a dream but noone in their 20s will be content with that type of lifestyle for long.

doubt that he'll be unemployed for the rest of his life

touring car racing in australia seems like a nice option for the weekends, couple that with a nice house, a hot wife and wild growing weed and you'll satisfy any 20 year old

I read the press, what reasons are you talking about? Very vague to me. Basically saying I don't like the changes in GP. My question, when has GP not changed? Just in a small amount of time, close to a decade its gone from 500 two-strokes, to 990s, to 800s, to 1000s to CRTs. Change is part of the game (for better or for worse).

I don't know, I'm just rambling right now, its a bit shocking to me. Casey is an awesome talent. Too soon. Why?

I mean the fact that he has made the decision based on not enjoying the racing or the way the series is headed. He could have given family reasons, he could have said he was worn out, or he could have kept his mouth shut and just kept on racing. But he thought about his life and the career that dominated it, and decided he'd be better off doing something else.

I walked away from a 'job for life' teaching job at a top school here in Spain and left teaching altogether a few years ago for similar reasons. Noone got it at the time, and it was one of the toughest and most important decisions of my life. I know that some people are going to relate to what he's done (I mean retiring, not winning multiple WCs) and others are going to think he's a complete head-case. Either way, he has no obligation to anybody beyond what is written in his contract.
