I agree with what Pedrosa said, Zarco is new to MotoGP and still getting used to the new format. The bikes are faster, the riding style and lines are different and the competition is tougher. Zarco is doing an exceptional job (unbelievable actually) and all the while still getting his head around the new format. Zarco seems a pretty decent person and obviously the line he took wasn't intended to rub paint (Rossi has done much worse on plenty of occasions as have others) ... Zarco is a rookie after all and entitled to a few rookie mistakes even though it can be easy to forget that point when you see him battling for podium positions - in his 3rd ever MotoGP race - and whilst on a satellite bike. Personally I don't think Rossi was all that bothered by it, on the cool down lap Zarco rode up to apologise, Rossi made some silly hand gestures but then shook his hand ... most likely had moved on. He was probably more annoyed with the media in the press conference who where massively over analysing the incident, repeatedly asking questions to him about it and generally just trying to make as big a thing of it as they could.
The 0.3 second penalty was
extremely reasonable, Rossi knew this and said he thought it was fair, "lets move on" was the message I got from his body language ....... The press harped on interrogating him with a line of questioning that probably made him feel like he was on trial when technically he was the one that got shunted. When the media could sense he was done with that topic they then began asking the same questions of Marc and Dani ...
The media know that any story with Rossi gets huge amounts of attention and revenue. I guess the media's tactic worked and VR eventually got draw in taking their bait ... venting his frustration (most likely with the press not letting go of the bone) making comments that made him come across like proper .... (also some what hypocritical based on his track record).... and in the process giving the media exactly the type of comments they yearned for to create more clickbait stories.
No doubt he made up time on DP and MM going off track ... mind you If I was racing I wouldnt have lifted off the gas either if i didn't have to. I'm sure If the penalty impacted the actual results he would have a different tune .....
What I found most interesting in the press conference was Rossi's opinion of the 2017 Yammy M1. Explaining how it can still be quick at the end of the race compared to the 16 (conserving tyres better maybe - lack of winglets - who knows) and validating it with his pass on Dani in the closing laps and building a decent gap. Last year he seemed to be strong during the first 5 laps then drop off until it appeared he was just hanging in there hoping to not get passed before the flag. Pity interesting news like the bike performance is quickly glossed over and gets no air time when there is a story about a pissy time penalty that ultimately had zero effect on results .... Just another storm in a tea cup.
