Rossi's nickname - an answer to my question

Heya guys,
Was just reading about the riders and about their nicknames. The wikipedia wrote that rossi's "The Doctor" nickname was given either when he earned a degree in Italy where they are allowed to use the title "Doctor" or because of his cool calculated way he would come up from behind his opponents. But what I dun find is, what degree did Rossi earned? I've seen pic of him with his graduation gown and all but no result of what he studied..although I think I've read somethin but just cn't remember.

I don't think he studied anything (or ucio must have doing the study and give vale the credits...) but I think he got that 'award' (<- that's how I see it) from his town for all of his achievements he did in the favour of his hometown tavullia...

I could be completly wrong with saying this, but I don't remember anybody saying anything about vale and a study he did.

He's got an honorary degree from the University of Urbino (Italy) in "comunication and Public Relationships", Universities like to give out this "trophies" to famous people to get on the media. Rossi never went to college to study.

If you watch the movie "Faster" Rossi's father talks about The Doctor nickname. He said something along the lines of "In Italy it is very respectable to be called a Doctor and took that name." Also, because of the cool calculated racing style he has.

His gown was just an award a university gave him. He didn't really go to school there.

Although one can say he has won 7 world titles so that makes him a Doctor of Motorcycle Racing. You know the whole 7 years of studying, 7 world championships. Make the connection....

Exactly. I attend Tennessee Tech here in the states. harry Stonecipher, alumni and former Boeing CEO, was given an honorary dgree in physics after he gave a large "donation" to the university. He actually did study physics for a bit, just didn't finish it. Then the guy spoke to one of my classes and talked about how students have it easy these days!

Rossi Jr also explained that looking up in the phone book you'll find long lists of "Doctor Rossi". Rossi is a common name and doctor is a popular title, so he took one himself. It was years later he recived the honorary title.

I used to work with a chick with the last name Rossi. I asked her if I could marry her but I insisted I would take her last name. Just so i could be called Rossi too!

I heard Rossi took the nickname "Doctor" because he said he was a world champ now, he can do whatever he wants, and who`s gonna stop him?

That's right, to be a 'doctor' in Italy is a status notch well above the rest not only in the academic world, but in business and in the all powerful civil service. If you are a doctor, you make sure that it is on your business card and in some cases to must be addressed as such.

When Rossi started competing as a kid in the Open Ducados in Spain, his teacher warned him that he would do nothing in life if he missed so many classes. Rossi dropped off school to try to get to the world series. He was saved from an uncertain future in the rigid Italian social layers by his exceptional talent.

The Urbino stunt was a joke, probably not very funny for many struggling to pay a mortgage or find a job in Italy. Rossi is a cosmic superstar but to this day he still mocks his teacher. So much for the ones who are so naive to follow his example without having his super talent.

Hey guys, thanx for answering my q. I did hd a feeling that he didn't really studied for a degree. Its better to get your facts rite. It may be an honorary degree but i do agree with some of you that he does deserve that title cos he came a long way from 125cc and 250cc being the reckless rider to a rider who literally 'operates' on his 'patients' with much precision. Take the Australia MOTOGP, did any of us expected for Rossi to be able to pull a fast one from right under Sete nose. And how he overcome his Assen injuries. Thanks for the many answers!

The degree he got was for contribution to motorsport and raising the profile of the sport. You don't achieve anything like that by going to Uni for a piece of paper.
