Motogp GB silverstone Rnd-5..SPOILERS

Ryder

How many aliens do we now have in the MotoGP universe? Obviously there's one: Jorge Lorenzo won with such ease today it was almost embarrassing. He retains his alien status. The recuperating Rossi obviously still belongs in the category of supernatural, but Casey Stoner and Dani Pedrosa's status has been in doubt recently.

Pedrosa crashed yesterday and in Sunday morning warm-up, which can't have helped his confidence or his knee but his race was a flashback to Qatar. There he got the holeshot then drifted back to seventh, this time ditto but he ended up eighth. Dani was completely perplexed, saying the feel with his hastily rebuilt bike just wasn't there. As track temperature was eleven degrees up on yesterday, he went for the harder rear tyre but was mildly surprised when all the guys on soft tyres came past him. One of them was Casey Stoner who had such a bad start he was last into the first corner thanks to a grabbing clutch. He spent an inordinate amount of time at the back of the field before mounting a late charge that looked like it might get him a rostrum finish. It was truly impressive and the sort of thing you expect from an alien—Casey's status remain intact. Dani's condition is unclear to everybody, including Dani. One week he's unbeatable, the next week he's an also ran.

Both Nicky Hayden and Andrea Dovizioso have been knocking on the door all season but haven't quite got there. Dovi' had another solid ride and Nicky looked like he was on for his first rostrum of the year before he was mugged by Ben Spies on the last lap. Ben had the decency to say he felt bad about depriving a fellow American of a top-three finish, Nicky said that been had been riding hard all weekend and reminded everyone that he'd been saying all year that Spies would be a rostrum regular. None of which made his fourth fourth-place of the year any more bearable. Nor does the fact that the man who looks most likely to make it five aliens in MotoGP is Ben Spies.

By next year when all the building work is finished Silverstone is going to be one of the best facilities we go to.

The only downside to MotoGP's return to Silverstone was the sight of just fifteen bikes starting the race, the smallest field since 1991. As well as the absent Rossi, we lost Hiro Aoyama after a morning highside; he is likely to be out for three months but the team expect to field another rider at Assen next week.

By the way, if you're wondering if the title to these Ryder Notes is a play on the four aliens, it's not. Lorenzo's victory celebration was to dress up with three of his crew for a reconstruction of the Sgt Pepper's cover...

Dang. When the camera crew popped by Nicky's garage minutes after he'd been mugged by Spies, Hayden waved the crew away.

It wasn't like a half-hearted "Oh hi guys." It was more like, "I'm feeling a little verklempt just now. Could you come back later when

I'm not on the verge of tears?"

It wasn't like a half-hearted "Oh hi guys." It was more like, "I'm feeling a little verklempt just now. Could you come back later when

I'm not on the verge of tears?" Seriously.... how much more of this being Mr. Nice Guy and doing Ducati's donkey work can his

ego take? His middle name should be Sisyphus. It's starting to feel like 2006 with Honda again... except he's not winning and his teammate isn't a ..........

Are ducati going to able to fix their top end speed problem. It seems ever since the start of the season the honda's and yamaha's can just breeze by them. Once again in this race they just cannot stay with the front running teams.

They don't have a top end problem. The Hondas were breezing by Nicky at Qatar b/c he did a really poor setting up the TC. The Ducati is fast in a straight line, it just has serious grip issues that have resulted from the new firing order.

Couple of things were said today of interest. One was the Ducati was heavy in the turns which may explain why Nicky is managing the bike and stoner is struggling more. The other was about the track. Were the F1 cars break a lot later than the motogp bike's is causing a problem. When the F1 cars break they roll up the tarmac causing the bumps in the track. The motogp bikes hit these bumps as there coming off the breaks which is causing the problems. Now put a bike that feels heavy in the turns on the track that gets bumpy as your coming off the breaks and you can see the problem. Still thought it was a great track though.

Now they're calling lorenzo "Whore-gay" ? Someething has to be done about setting universal pronounciations for racers and riders

Just finished watching the race. All I can say is that hayden has done something sinful in his past and is being punished for it from 06 onwards. First losail then this. I'm happy for spies but must really suck for hayden, and jumkie

What a race, Lorenzo was brilliant, they type of performance of someone who is on the top of their game. I dare say regardless of Rossi's non participation the title was probably his.

Casey was brilliant, to come from dead last through to 5th is brilliant, especially considering his troublesome start to the season. That was a Rossi'esq performance. IF he had nailed the start i think he would have been close to Lorenzo (as his clear air lap times suggest) but I doubt he would ahve beaten him.

All in all a very entertaining race.

Yeah I heard that too. Slow steering is just the nature of L-engines, I've heard. I'm not good enough to really tell a big difference, but apparently the L engine is very spread out, and the way Ducati position the engine in the bike makes it slow steering.

I really thought Silverstone was epic, and the racing gods were definitely smiling at Silverstone b/c the sun came out and we got to see the true pace of the circuit. I might actually have to watch a formula 1 race just to see what kind of speeds a car can do.

You'll probably find it hard to get a proper reference so the actual speed, so here is a good example by Top Gear. They go up from formula cars to GP2 and then onto F1. And also show just how hard it is to actually drive one.

I was being a ....! Feel free to respond in kind, no harm done. To be honest, Rossi is the GOAT, no question and anyone with any sense would agree. However, had Rossi gone from last to 6th in the span of 12 laps I suspect we would have all been subjected to pages and pages of boppers proclaiming his greatness. I suspect Stoner will be somewhat displeased with the day but to come from last to 6th is a very good result that anyone should be proud of. The success of other riders (Lorenzo, Stoner, et al) takes nothing away from Rossi's accomplishments.

Food for thought... (all referenced from paddocktalk.com)

Jorge Lorenzo:

I never dreamt of taking three wins from five races but here we are and I am feeling very strong mentally at this moment. The Beatles celebration was something fun for the fans, I love their music and I thought it was nice to make a homage to them, since we're in England!

Andrea Dovizioso:

We still need to improve so that we can battle for race wins, but we are one step closer today and it’s a good result for us at the start of a busy period of races. Next stop is Assen and we must move forward again so that we have a chance of winning there.

Hmmmmm... Shouldn't Andrea be ecstatic? Doesn't sound overly happy with something...

Dani Pedrosa:

The one positive thing from the weekend is that even though I had two crashes I wasn’t injured and I didn’t feel pain during the race today.

Then you and/or the bike just sucked, eh? Something still not right at Repsol (see above)...

TOSHIYUKI YAMAJI - REPSOL HONDA TEAM MANAGER:

Actually this was quite a difficult race weekend for the Repsol Honda Team because Dani had two crashes and Andrea also had a crash and this disrupted our machine set-up process to some extent.

... and Repsol Honda management blames the riders!!!

Ben Spes:

...I'll let it sink in and make the most of it. But on this day I can say I was the third best rider in the world and it is a good feeling.

Damn right - I bet it is!

Collin Edwards:

I want to congratulate Ben though because he did an awesome job and I've got nothing but admiration for him. He showed today what a great rider he is and it is great for the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team to be back on the podium.

Sounds genuine to me... I don't think he has, or will have an issue with his teammate's success.

Álvaro Bautista:

For me the race seemed like my first free practice...

That's rich, five races in and Alvaro feels like he's getting his first free practice - during a race... Way to go Suzi!

More - from motomatters.com

Jorge Lorenzo:

Q: Did you expect Stoner to have no podiums after five races?

JL: You know, I have a lot of respect for the talent of Casey. But sometimes the riders have this crisis of confidence, and if you don't have things clearly in your mind, it's difficult to be in front in this class.

Q: What did you think of the performance of Spies today? To get a podium this quickly is very impressive.

JL: Yes, I like him. Because he's aggressive and he's very concentrated, during every practice, during all the weekend. And you can see it, he has clear goals, and it's only a question of time before he can be on the podium consistently.

Q: You finished nearly 7 seconds ahead of your rivals. What did you do to set up your bike to achieve this? Was it easy to find a setup?

JL: It was good enough to win today! But we all have problems, always. Today we had problems, and we have to speak to the Japanese. Especially we need to improve the engine, because we don't have enough power compared to Ducati and Honda. So we have a lot of work to do.

Comment: Jorge thinks the Yamaha is down on power?!? General consensus here seems to be the Duc is down on power...

Mate if there is one race to watch for the amazing speeds of an f1 car it has to be silverstone. It is a phenomonal track.

When you see the speeds through Copse, Maggots and Becketts you will be blown away, last year the Red Bulls were flat through all of those corners in 7th gear, the corners were reportedly taken at around 295kph! its pretty redic when you consider Copse is close to a 90 deg right hander!!

Nicky sucked balls losing that podium! Got beat by a rookie. And .... the ..... who cut to Lorenzo right as the action was happening for podium.

Nicky ...... up and raced like Pedrosa today by folding and bobbling. Ben made Nicky look stupid and while doing so made the biggest statement for who should be subing for Rossi. Scared Crutchlow turned it down, and Colin is riding like a joke (oh retire Colin, u officially suck). Any doubters left about Spies? Huh huh huh?

Speed ch sucks! U get an American on the podium and u cant show us post race interviews? U suck!

Being a Nicky fan has been a priviledge and a curse.

.... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... FUUUUUUUUUCK!!!

300kph. Well then, I guess I will have to watch.

Weekend top speeds, couldn't find a speed chart for just the race. The Ducati had the highest top speed for the race, but look at the speeds of the Tech 3 bikes, ouch. Makes Spies podium look that more impressive, and with a fractured ankle. Put

the boy on the Fiat Yamaha with his ankle healed...
