The pre-event press conference pre-show with those two godawful commentators should be rated xxx. The Rossi verbal fellatio was gonzo film worthy. They just couldn't contain their amazement for such a heroic return to racing after suffering such an injury. Except for the fact it's hardly extraordinary in the world of motorsport.

I can no longer tolerate the parochialism of the Melbourne based commentators and the capricious nature of the umpiring, views my father shares, and that the sport seems to have become heavily narrative based, similar to my problem with gp bike racing in recent times. I also now see it as something of a waste of athletic talent which could be involved in more international sports.

It's a sport. Played at many levels. If you like it, watch it at the level that matches your interest

I didn't know he also hurt his bum. A lot of sitting involved in this sport. What a pain in the arse.

I want Zarco to win a race. Especially since he isn't a contender. Can he do it without changing his soft tire routine and killing Viñales?

I couldn't help myself, there where a few lines in the water so I threw one in. .
 
Now that it's Aragon it's perfectly acceptable for Marquez, Vinales and Dovi to walk up to anyone post race and ask anyone that beat them across the line why they beat them.

I have been an avid fan for most of my life, and went to school with future VFL players back in the day, but despite still supporting Victoria in the cricket due to my childhood allegiance have just got sick of the Melbourne-centric nature of the AFL, and the likes of Eddie Everywhere in particular. If they wanted to keep it as the VFL as it was when my father played they could and should have done so, no-one forced them to go national, and as I said the narrative that Footscray should win last year and Richmond this year because it would be "good for the game" in view of the fanbase of those teams resembles the narrative surrounding an 8th/10th title for Rossi for me.

Hard to disagree with you there. As a west Aussie I certainly have always viewed the AFL as clearly biased towards Victorian teams. I will be cheering for Adelaide and GWS to win this week and I think both are in with a pretty good shot.

Good post and one that I have little disagreement with. I, too, think the AFL is a manipulative .... of an organisation. To further your Rossi analogy, take teams like Essendon or Carlton, who are generally referred to as winners of 16 flags...but do Port Adelaide get their SANFL flags added to the total? (Isn't it something like 35 flags??)

To be fair those teams joined the VFL so I don't mind their records not counting. But really the only relevance anymore is what has been done since the expansion started.

As a side note as we get this thread even more off track... Am I the only one who thinks the Eagles should've won more than 2 flags in the 90s given the talent they had?
 
Everyone joined the AFL...only the pre-existing PA doesn't have their flags counted. Everyone else has their VFL flags counted. The point being the supposed Australian League is a de facto VFL (which is also the point I believe Michael was making)

Anyhooo. Marquez fast in the wet FP1. Rossi not too bad in 18th but didn't do many laps. Very sketchy conditions to risk your busted leg in. Hondas looking solid so far. I actually feel a bit bad for magical M. Winning the 8 hours and a motoGP wildcard just beyond your grasp. I hope VR actually races this weekend

Exactly my point. Eddie bemoans the supposed diminishment of the "traditional" VFL clubs, but there doesn't seem to be much concern for the South Australian or WA state competitions, the South Australian competition at least having almost as venerable a tradition.
 
FP2 bids fair to be pretty much a waste of time as well, particularly if the race is dry.

Worst possible conditions for Valentino Rossi, stronger chance of falling as has been said, not much to be gained.
