Oh, I get why contender became a contention of conversation. You NEEDED an adjective and/or adverb to make it viable for you, otherwise it is like saying we are all contending for the richest person on earth because, well, we are alive and may even have some money.

I shall remember to add PLENTY of adjectives when discussing Dovi's contention or Cal Contenders shot for a title. I do tend to understand contention in the following way. (from my magic Macintosh.)

in contention
having a good chance of success in a contest: he was in contention for the batting title in September.

Does that "in" make it clearer about how I feel about Dovi and his contending history?

MarcVDS to be the second Suzuki team in 2018 with Miller and Morbidelli (who we know is coming the MotoGP).

Logic says, ATM. Dovi has so far contended "the best".......

You can bring in all the "airy fairy" coulda woulda shoulda factors you like ....... at the moment, under the current "environment" Dovi is contending above all other contenders. Ergo ..... at this point in time ...... Dovi is the number one contender.

You may not like it ..... but you cant deny it. Logically

It's rigged for Rossi, yet Rossi is the new old, or is that old new, or maybe just old old Pedrosa. No matter how much rigging, he is ever the bridesmaid, never the bride. Gets cold feet. It took a blue flag controversy just to gift him a win. Or was it a case of Petrucci being a non championship contender meant he had no right to race and pass Rossi? What round does that rule come into affect again?

Never mind. Dovi, if he is as smart as they say he is, might have paid attention to how Marquez won the championship last year. With Michelin tires it's not about racking up wins with blinding speed, more taking the odd opportunistic win then minimising those costly Mishitelin front mistakes. Plus I reckon whatever they are doing at Ducati trying to get Lorenzo competitive, as opposed to having Ianone as a Crashmore Cal style team mate, is likely going to help Dovi contend even more so.

No he's a fantastic rider, it's just that there's more to racing than being a talented rider or having a good bike, maybe it's the team who are having the problem setting up his bike for him, maybe he can't get the right feel with the Michelins in order to have the confidence to push, maybe he's got something going on in his life outside of the sport which is causing a distraction.
So many variables can cause the difference between winning and finishing last, I've seen it myself, I've seen riders on Pirellis struggling, next week they throw a pair of Dunlops on and bang they're challenging for the win(obviously GP riders don't have that luxury).

VR suggested it. Dorna thought it was as fantastic as an idea as any he has offered and felt it was worth doing.

If Casey Stoner had still been racing and suggested it, they would have not only declined to move it forward, but they would also have banned pit boards.

The only two I have heard are against it are Bradley and Smut-hoe. So I don't see any reason to be against it.
