I watched my video of Valencia 2004 a week or so ago and was actually surprised to see that the bikes were roughly as in line and stable as the bikes are now, the difference isn't actually all its cracked up to be (with the exception of the now lack of broad celebratory slides). The main difference was that i found the 990's looked a little cumbersome. 800 for the win.

990's made the 500's look a bit lame though.

Which decade of 500's?

I'd say the 990's were equal to 800's.

Check my edit, decided I was wrong.

The last gen 500's were quite tame compared to the 80's and 90's ones. And apart from being quicker in a straight line the 990's were roughly equal to an 800 in balls terms. Considering I think it takes more balls to take a corner 6 mph quicker than to sit on a bike 6mph quicker.

Yea the last generations of 500's were not the beasts seen in the 80's when engine power was miles ahead of chassis tech. The 990's brought that back and it looked spectacular, but it also looked a bit clumsy compared to the late 500's and now the 800's. I wouldn't say any of them were more "manly" than any other (what does that even mean??)

How easy they are to ride overall. I think most journalists have agreed below the limit that the 800's are VERY tame to ride, and even the riders have agreed on this. But I feel it's probably more nostalgia and sour grapes than anything else, considering the 800 change has harmed a few riders.

Well its easy to critisize the bikes for being too "easy" because they don't punish mistakes, but if a fan feels danger is the most significant factor to their enjoyment then they'd just sack motogp and watch road racing. By the standards of some on here John McGuinness is not only more "manly" than all the motogp guys he's also a better rider
