I, but in all fairness I think it is tough to criticise Rossi for being a much better rider than his competitors in his early premier class career, he could only compete against the riders who turned up.
I am not sure he had a massive bike advantage in most of those years, leaving aside the tyre issue,
Poor old Paps demonstrates the perils of viewing old race footage knowing only the heroic Rossi narrative whilst in ignorance of any context.
I totally agree that you can only race who shows up, But, the powers that be took his advantage and used it to ensure their own success. I'm not sure there is one component available to man that is more critical to performance than having a tire advantage and that is what Rossi was given with the SNS. You can have indentical bikes on different tires and one will be superior to the other. Throw in a rider who is a notch above the others and you get the first half of Rossi"s career .Sometimes I say things just to watch boppers implode, but I will say this with all seriousness, had Rossi not been given the advantages he was, we would not be discussing him except in passing. Looking back, I find it amazing he didn't win more.
