This community is pretty international.  Imagine if we each were filthy rich and had money to spend on a racing team.  Myself being Minnesotan/Spanish, would more than likely look around my neck of the woods for a fast kid to put my money on.  Not only to help the local community, but to put a friendly young face on a product or company I own to use as a marketing tool in the country or geographical location I sell most of my product.

I don't understand why some see Repsol (SPANISH oil company) as country biased, or that they should fund another countries young riders.  Stoner was on one commercial in Spain, and all he said was "gracias" as the very end of it.  He was not usable in Repsol's main market.  Pedrosa, Marquez, and Layla Sanz (Spanish womens Enduro) area all over billboards, magazines an such.

Curve, talk to some of them Texas Petro companies, see what they can do.  Jumkie, people in Cali giving money to Benito?  The brits could send some letters to BP.  Paul Bird Racing has a brit going around in circles,  too bad he sucks...

In 18 seasons of HRC sponsorship, Repsol have run a Spanish rider for 14 seasons. During those 14 seasons, Repsol window-dressers managed to win 1 title, while the non-Spanish talent won 10 titles. Who could accuse Repsol of permanently reserving a seat for Spanish riders?

The company is Global Fortune 500. Some have argued that Repsol are really only interested in motorsport insofar as it supports domestic retail fuel sales. I think Repsol was once a public company, and they still behave like a public company in some regards.

BP is no longer british petroleum

Just BP.

Nothing to do with us anymore.

Not true - it's still British owned, just as Shell is still an Anglo - Dutch concern.

Ownership is just one side of the story though. The target of sponsorship also varies quite a bit between different companies. Red Bull, Monster, Camel, Marlboro, Rothmans and the like are companies that care a lot about appealing to end consumers internationally. For oil companies, this is less important, a lot of their buisiness isn't with the average joe motocycle enthousiast, and to the extend that it is, consumer choice is constrained by things like gas station licences. As far as I know, the Repsol brand is scarcely available to end consumers outside Spain (not sure about this), so in that sense, favoring Spanish riders makes perfect sense.

Obviously, Rome is the capitol of Italy, not Romania. Romania's capitol is of course Budapest.

being from romania i can tell you one thing...the last country with which romanians want to be confused is hungary.

if the joke was that rather than the almost-homophone-confusion , +100 points ;)
