Jorge Lorenzo #99 - One point, that is all that separates Jorge Lorenzo from the the championship lead. The position is so close, and such a just reward for all of the blood, sweat and tears that Lorenzo had spent and shed this season and yet it is ever so far away. To intimate that Lorenzo has done anything less than decimate the sizable points advantage from earlier this season is to admit to being oblivious to just how spectacularly the season has unfurled, and shame on you. For the first time in his career Lorenzo enters the race weekend having won the last 4 races in a row and places himself within just one point of leading a championship season that started with him not being listed as a major contender. This takes a tremendous amount of pressure off the Spaniard as it creates some interesting permutations of how many ways the weekend can go right for him. Lorenzo, for example, need only finish one points awarding place ahead of his teammate to wrest control of the championship. While a finish as far back as fifteenth would award a tie in points, Lorenzo would still lead the championship by virtue of having won more races this season. His Achilles heel though, should he be said to have one, would be the weather in general and this track in particular. Assen has not been kind to the former champion in the last 3 years, and the forecasted rain can do nothing but cloud his already murky chances. Still Lorenzo is in his absolute element, both physically and mentally coming into this weekend, so the results may just be the consequence of mind over matter.

  • 2014 Movistar Yamaha - 13th
  • 2013 Yamaha Factory Racing - 5th (dry)
  • 2012 Yamaha Factory Racing - DNF (dry)

Valentino Rossi #46 - If one point separates Jorge Lorenzo from leading the championship then one point is all that keeps Valentino Rossi at its head. Eight rounds in and Rossi maintains his position despite the meteoric rise of one of his most stalwart competitors. The only thing apparently more unexpected than Lorenzo's mid-season dominance is the fact that Rossi has managed to survive the onslaught of younger talent for this long. If there is one ..... in his armor, it would be his seeming inability to qualify in a position worthy of his finish. Rossi definitely has the pace; last time out he was the only racer who wasn't broken by the relentless and metronomic pace set by Lorenzo at the front. More surprisingly he is the only racer so far this season who has been able to reel Lorenzo in at any point once he has made a break for the checkered flag. Unfortunately for him, 2nd place is no longer enough. Rossi can no longer play second fiddle and expect to remain in the lead, and yet this may not be the weekend for reckless abandon. Rain has a way of shaking up the field, and it is supposed to make an appearance on both days. On the other hand, Rossi has done well in the rain in general and well at Assen in the rain to be specific. With Lorenzo coming in to form, a rainy Dutch TT may be just what the doctor ordered to put more of a gap between the two should Lorenzo falter.

Dani Pedrosa #26 - Just who is the number one rider at Honda, anyway? Realistically you wouldn't say that it was this man, but looking at how the season has unfurled one has to wonder. Much has been made about Honda's woes to date, yet Pedrosa has managed to put the RCV on the podium with somewhat surprising regularity despite injury and mid-season surgery. Yet despite the podium accolades things are far from rosy for the Spaniard. He is far more likely, for example, to find himself battling with Suzukis and Ducatis than Yamahas - and that can't feel good. Winning? Well that certainly hasn't been in the cards to date. So Dani has quietly gone about the business of consolidating his place in the championship. With only 39 points he sits in 10th place, 30 points behind his teammate (who has managed to claim the top spot of the podium). Yet with plenty of racing left to go Pedrosa certainly has the opportunity to climb. When life hands you a bucket of lemons, sometimes it is best to cut them up and serve them with Corona and margaritas. Pedrosa is making the best of a less than ideal situation. If the weather becomes a factory, which all indications point to, then he may just get the opportunity to make an even strong name for himself.

Marc Marquez #93 - The past year has seen a lot of change for the world's number one rider. The reigning world champion, having defeated all comers for two years in a row, now finds himself with plenty of learning opportunities. The rider who once dominated the field by winning 10 straight races now finds himself struggling, not just to win but to even finish. Much ado has been made regarding the woes experienced by Honda, with (ironically) eerily similar notations to those leveled against Ducati during and following the Stoner era. The Honda can finish, of course, and as proven by his compatriot and teammate can even podium. However to Marquez this is not enough. Marquez himself has said that he is unwilling to change his style, and to be fair it has brought him much accolade and fan fair over the years. Even in this, possibly his most disastrous season to date, his still rests 5th in the championship with 69 points and well within the mathematical chances of mounting a comeback for a championship run. However even his chances are running out. While one point separates the championship leaders, one point also separate Marquez... but for a different reason. Tech 3 Yamaha's Bradley Smith, with 68 points to his name, sits just one point shy of overtaking the factory Honda for championship position on a customer Yamaha M1. Pedrosa may have the excuse of having missed races for surgery and then needing to recover under fire, but Marquez has had no such luxury. To his credit Marquez is trying desperately to recapture his championship winning form, and for at least this weekend will revert back to the 2014 chassis that he was so dominant on, retro-fitted with this year's upgrades. In a strange twist of irony, testing of that setup was cut short by exactly the type of weather that is predicted for this racing weekend. The question now becomes which is more important for the Spaniard - to retain his overall position among the strongest of the factory teams, or to try winning at all costs often to the detriment of man, machine and team? The top riders are once again guarded in their responses regarding his riding so there is undoubtedly some hope - externally at least - for the former. What we will likely get, however, is the latter.

Oh I cannot wait to see what sort of rank ........ comes pouring forth from Kropos fingertips.

I bet it's going to be some half-assed ........ about how the intelligence of Marc Marquez was enough to to point Honda's engineers in the right direction.

He put in some fat laps, but came close to torpedoing Redding, and laying over on to of jlo. Glad to see Vale up so high. And a damn good showing for Dani. I really hope he catching and passes MM in points this year.

Yeah, he was behind Redding and was coming into a corner too hot, about plowed through him. He was outside Jorge in a corner and tried to lay on top of him. He also ran wide about as often as he didn't. He's second on the time sheets, but was all over the place. It was rather telling how different his and Dani's styles are. Dani was fast, but didn't really look like it, almost a Jorge type smooth style.

This probably doesn't bode well for the race if MM is already nearly taking guys out in FP sessions.

Did Dani look like he was having any issues with missing apexes and the like?

No. He didn't come out blazing, just smooth and steady and worked his way up to the top. He actually set a new lap record.

Of fp3 is rained out tomorrow, I can see MM taking someone out in quali. He was very frantic.
