Marc’s recent comments on riding the Honda after his second place finish in Aragon:
“At the moment I cannot ride like I want, as soon as I try I crash.
“So, I need to think about riding in another way and I cannot ride in a natural way.
“But for me, the target is to try to find a way, to be competitive, to fight for championships – maybe not with the same riding style, but as we showed today, as we showed in Austria, riding in a different way doesn’t mean being slow.
“It’s another way we’re able to be fast, but we don’t have that extra, so we will try in the future.
“But it’s not only me: we need to keep working with the bike, we need to keep working with the team and if I improve a little bit, the bike improves a little bit, we are there with these guys.”
He is amazing. He clearly has an ability to adapt that is special. He speaks matter-of-dactyl about this after fighting for victory while Pol and Maverick struggle.

He seems to be putting his problems significantly down to his physical condition while not exonerating the bike, which Darth Puig is saying won’t move away from the current engineering/design philosophy. I definitely agree with others that the current bike on the current tires is problematic/twitchy at best, and perhaps worse than it was when he most recently previously rode at the start of the previous season. Even when he was in peak physical condition the miraculous saves from what would have been loses for anyone else were a roll of the dice which I doubt could have continued for the remainder of his career anyway. 20 year old reflexes don’t continue to be at that level forever, and presumably even he has some fear now after the near career ending injury and continuing crashes.
I guess one interpretation which could be placed on what he said is that he could adapt his riding style to suit other bikes.

While for sure his strength and conditioning post accident have played a role in his comeback fitness, I am increasingly convinced that the mental stress, repeated injuries to his shoulders due to his riding style and age itself is taking its toll on MM. This season alone he has made a lot of errors in judgement regarding his own performance and in traffic. He would be young if he were a chess player. He’s a motorcycle racer, with a shelf life probably shorter than most. In spite of his will, the tsunami of younger and entirely capable riders who have learned from him is not going away. And, they are getting better and better.
This scenario has played out and is playing out across all athletic domains. Relentlessly.

I agree time waits for no-one, and that age and injuries have to affect how even the bravest of the brave rides. He might be able to improve the component of his current reduced physical capacity due to not being able to train preseason for this year as a consequence of the humeral fracture, which does finally seem to be completely healed now, in the off-season, but the shoulder problems seem to have become chronic and are what I have always thought would limit his career. On the other hand the Honda appears to be fairly diabolical a la the Ducati 800 as has been said, and perhaps can be improved. He still probably in the most recent race had better whole lap pace than a brilliant young rider in Bagnaia on a Ducati which seemed much better sorted than the Honda but just couldn’t pass him (credit to Bagnaia of course), and I think the other possibility that he will come back as Doohan did after an intervening year to get himself back up to speed also exists.
Depends long term on how bad the shoulder or shoulders are I guess, but I agree with others that he might be winning now on a Ducati, or perhaps on more than one of the other bikes.
