So my question, is DMG's plan starting to work?
I think it still has a chance to work, although it better keep producing good races in order to win over fans. I like the idea of a more level playing field, with private teams in the hunt. A grid of factory teams filled out by superstock bikes does not appeal to me any more than DMG's plan.
I feel Daytona Sportbike will have a much harder time winning fan support. The idea was apparently just too out there for bike fans; the "massive" twins, rolling starts, and Buell controversy seemed to cause fans to recoil badly.
I like the idea, minus the "Daytona" part. The potential for diversity could have been a good thing for the class. Sport bikes that aren't necessarily race replicas laid out on a level playing field with the 600s, the potential of seeing the 848, BMW HP2 sport, Aprilia Mille and others in one class is a cool idea. Think of it as supersport with a little more flavor.
Buell starting the season so far out of balance was a huge blow to the concept. I think it obscured the idea of parity-bred variety, instead coming across as a rigged farce.
