Well said Gaz. Rossi hasn't lost it, the others got better. They are all in their prime now.

I've been saying this for the last couple of seasons, and getting a load of ..... over itfor being a bopper. Rossi was the benchmark in Gp from the last days of the 500s until the 800s. The young guns coming in HAD to get thier game above Rossi's level to beat him. That is fact (unless you are one of the blind Rossi haters) Casey and Jorge took it to the next level, Rossi was still up there with them.  I'm no mindless bopper, I said in 2010 that Jorge was the future, and that injured Rossi or not, the title would likely have been Lorenzos. The Ducati move was stupid vanity that bit his arse, and during that period, the game kept moving. Now he is back on the Yam, on the back foot, now he has to raise his game to another level, and, he is not the fearless 20 year old who has hopefully another 10 years to bounce along the tarmac chasing fast laps.

Personally, I think he can pop up to the front this year, it's a long season, and he's a clever bugger.

Just not at Silvo when I'm no there!

I don't think many would disagree actually, "haters" or not. I certainly don't, and by all accounts I do believe I'm a certified "boner" and "hater".

No, no Rossi is .... Krop, he has only won anything because of tech advantages and backroom deals... :)  I'm surprised the CRT's aren't beating him too, oh wait that was Dovi.....

You've been around powerslide long enough now to understand this.

Not that it justifies detraction now or ever from someone who has achieved what Rossi has in the sport, but I seem to recall a modicum of scorn directed at one Casey Stoner by you among others for finishing 4th in the championship with several race wins and frequent podiums, on a Ducati ffs.

The others are good, and they are quite a bit younger, quite a bit.......perspective-Marc was probably still in huggies pull-ups and had yet to go to kindy when Rossi won his first 125cc title

Rossi can't be the same Rossi of 2004, though that's what most are expecting. The fact that he still has races like Qatar 2013 in him, in this utterly ridiculously regulated and over-tech -aid age is remarkable. Problem is with most here, and indeed a lot of spectators, is perspective gets conveniently lost and there seems to be this ....... need to sum up riders form and seasons expectations after every session, Dani has certainly proved how silly this practice is....

If u want to know how good Rossi ever was in MotoGP, U can start day one of his Ducati tenure. Had that never happened, his staunch fans would still be claiming hes infallible...which oddly enuf, still are. Its the reality that nobody ever really quite understands or worse, accepts. Hes riding Lorenzo's bike now, with still one of the best crews in the world. Such is the affect of such a small difference. Look at Cal, complaining about not having factory support while his fans demanding for it. The logic, its whats holding him back. Newsflash, the reverse is true! Casey, one of the greatest of our era, couldnt get the dominance normal for his talent durin 2nd year at HRC, on real or percieved issues to start last season. Once sorted, even Pedro could reel off wins while Lorenzo was managing title. Beyond the top 4 bikes the rest dont have a chance. But that doesnt stop peeps from concluding all manner of .... about rider skill & talent. If peeps gonna point to this & that holding back their rider, which i sympathize with, then u should accept THE REVERSE IS TRUE.

Let's all see how this season unfolds... At this stage, it looks like Lorenzo has Rossi easily covered. Rossi doesn't seem the same after his accident in 2010. Plus the realisation that Yamaha were not gonna favour him over Lorenzo must have been a huge blow to his ego. Then to be humbled by 2 win-less years at Ducati (the same team that the simple farm boy managed to get victories in every season) must have all taken its toll. Add the extra age to the equation, and its quite apparent that we are not witnessing the Valentino Rossi that we were witnessing in 2004.

Would the young Rossi mix it with the current new breed of elite riders? Hard to say. But if the current Rossi IS gonna mix it with the new guns, he had better get his act together.

Very droll, particularly in a thread where you are railing (rightly imo) against Valentino's past achievements being overlooked.

Hopefully he will, I'm getting fed up of listening to the Spanish national anthem.

Good post. Tho, yer still a Bopper and I don't think baring rain or a catastrophic number of crashes or an act of God - Rossi will stand at the top spot on the podium again. :console:

How is that relevant? All the other riders deal with the same technical issues. It's not just Rossi who is subject to them.

Rossi is a little like Muhammad Ali, a champion mediatically bigger than his sport and with a large and captive fan base always expecting miracles from him, in spite of bad results and evidence of decline. A situation likely to irritate many purists. At least Valentino managed to stay out of politics and religion... :D

<span style="font-size:14px;But could one sensibly declare Ali a mediocre boxer because he lost to his ex sparring partner when he was 36?

so dodging jail and being stripped of titles at your prime is the same sort of bad luck as signing a ducati contract?

makes sense.

Rossi? Ali?

Vale just needs to address a KKK rally to make the comparison complete.

Kinshasa 1974 and Laguna 2008, why not -- one could see some similarities, like how to trick a stronger opponent into your kind of fight to beat him... ;)
