Testing starts tomorrow

Seems like the factory Yamaha boys are not like the 2014 rubber...

Jorge:

The new rear tyres, both the soft and the hard, are not working properly on our M1. For the moment we are finding a solution for the tyre; it seems for Yamaha that it is much worse.

We are trying everything on the bike – all the set-ups that we can – but when we go on to the track it's always the same feeling.

The tyres don't give me any confidence in the corner entry, in the middle of the corner and on acceleration.

We are trying to work with Bridgestone to make them change the tyre but for the moment they have a very closed mind about that and they don't want to change. They say this tyre is the safest, but we say the opposite – that it is more dangerous. It seems Bridgestone will not be providing different tyres this year so we have to adapt to the situation.

In response to a suggestion that Lorenzo may have to adapt his riding style this year to suit the 2014 Bridgestones, the Mallorcan responded: "When you're not happy you can make gymnastics on the bike but the thing will be the same."

Vale:

The big issue for us at this test is to try and adapt the M1 to the new tyres, because in the first test we had some problems with the 2014 tyres.

Asked if he had been surprised by the decision to change to the 2014 tyres, Rossi replied:
Yes. As always... Something happened that we cannot understand [tires]. We just understand when it is already done. So when you are already ......! And it is very bad when you are ...... and you don't feel nothing before - it is a bad surprise [laughs]! But anyway it is like this.

Valentino Rossi ended the day in 4th, the Italian faring much better with the new Bridgestone tires than his teammate Jorge Lorenzo. Lorenzo is completely demoralized by his pace on the new rear Bridgestone, ending the day down in 9th, over a second off the pace of Pedrosa.

What is Rossi talking about that the tires are a surprise, its the 2014 rubber that was introduced last fall. This is not like 2012 when they introduced that years tires in the fall of 2011, only to change it a few weeks before the first race. . Besides, i thought Rossi loved a harder side  construction tire. If they are truely struggling, its time to go to work and solve the problem, like Honda did in 2012, and poor old Ducati has been trying for the last 7 years. What goes around comes around Jorge, now its your turn to adapt. Lets see what you are made of. Personally, i think Yamaha is sandbagging, trying to trick the system into concessions to compensate for their fuel struggles.

Tires, tires, and more tyres!!

Obviously edge grip is different from the tyre from last year but you have to work on the bike to make it better. I had to stop early in order to make some big changes to the bike, and when we restarted after lunch I felt more comfortable and put in better laps. Things went well this afternoon, even though this morning we were still having some issues and I wasn't able to ride comfortably. We focused on the front end and were able to find a good set-up. Tomorrow we will focus on making progress with the rear, because we have to get the new tyre working better and increase grip.

Rossi

I am a little bit worried because with the new tyres we are in trouble. The bike has become more difficult to ride and gives us more problems with understeer and not so much grip in acceleration. We tried a lot of different things today but we don't fix the problem. With the Yamaha we have to try to do the lap time with the corner speed but with this tyre the bike moves and we lose time. We have no grip on the edge and it's bad because this tyre is good for the Honda and bad for the Yamaha.

Lorenzo

Refused to speak with reporters at Sepang after ending the day in ninth place, over a second behind Pedrosa.

@Pov: You don't think Honda woulda bitched if they realized they were gonna have chatter BEFORE the season? I think Yamaha is wise to sandbag all they can. ..... to Dorna, Bridgestone, and keep turning the wrenches to improve the set-up. You think they are sitting on their hands in Jorge's garage?

Dovizioso, Crutchlow make Open class debut...

Andrea Dovizioso made his debut on an Open class version of the Ducati Desmosedici during day two of MotoGP testing at Sepang. It [Open software] is a little bit worse than our Factory [software] so we have to work and tonight we will have a meeting. It is not too bad but our own software is better. The engine feels a little better with more fuel, but the difference is not so big. Dovizioso switched to the Open software at 4pm. Looking at his lap sequence, the Italian set a time just 0.049s slower than his best of the day on lap 46 of 48 - which would have been while using the Open software.

Crutchlow had also used the Open software after 4pm today - and since Crutchlow's best time of the day came on his 50th of 52 laps, it looks to have been done with the Open software.

Kind of like 2012 huh Valentino.

I'm so happy somebody gave Aleix a proper ride. I think he can be a title contender this year

He will start a lot of races towards the front, but i would be really surprised if he finishes the championship in the top 6-7

Point being, Stoner bitched, why can't the Yammie riders?

Wilco Zeelenberg speaks for Jorge:

“Both tyres [hard and soft] don't work for us. Both are the same. Slow. Normally you improve with the soft one, but we do the same time with both. Edge grip is the main problem.

“You never stop trying and there is always something new to try, but we are very curious to see how it is at Phillip Island [the next test]. If we are competitive again then we know the tyres are not working for us at this track.”

Lorenzo was only the fourth fastest Yamaha rider behind Aleix Espargaro, Rossi and Pol Espargaro.

“Jorge is struggling a bit more than the others because he has a different riding style. He really likes to lean the bike and use the edge to keep the corner speeds. So it has hurt one of his special skills.

“It has never been so extreme before. He has always been able to do something decent with the same tyres as everyone was using. Okay sometimes you have a small advantage, sometimes a small negative. But now...

“Already at the last test he had this feeling, 'I cannot do anything with this tyre, only the old [2013] one is working well'. Also the lap time was a lot better at the last test.

Nicky's thoughts:

Nicky Hayden has revealed the extent of the top speed deficit he is facing with the new Production Honda: I know the last test it was 18km/h. I can't imagine it's any closer. It's all the same parts and we now have the same gearing.

It was still really hot but we were able to get plenty of work done, mainly on the suspension and general set-up. We also worked a bit on the gearbox although at the moment there is not much for us to try in this area and it is quite time consuming work. The feeling today was pretty good, we improved the lap times and hopefully we can continue to do that tomorrow through a combination of improving the bike and also my riding.

As an Open class rider Hayden has a softer rear tyre available compared to the Factory class, but his harder tyre option is the same as the softer Factory option. “The soft tyre I have is not too bad, but the harder tyre was really not good at all, which is their soft tyre. So I can imagine they are not so happy. Edge grip was not bad but it was really spinning up.”

Actually it was the last straw that made him quit. He bitched but accepted it. I dont recall him petitioning Bridegestone after the decision was made though.
