This was supposedly the reason they are sharing GPS data and other data (not onboard telemetry) so the teams will stop doing this. The interesting part is that Yamaha is collecting data in the open, rather than paying a "journalist" to gather data for them. The old regime of disguising spying operations is why Honda closed the Sepang test to the public at the last minute during the 2024 preseason before taking the wraps off of their new aero package.
Yes in Honda’s case they could not let other teams get vital information in regard to how not to build a race bike for the current formula.

Ducati were exactly the same 15 yrs ago.
I could be totally wrong but I'm thinking Ducati never showed up to the first post-season test with nothing new to try. Honda???

The only time I think this was true was for the GP11. It was more or less the same as the GP10 at the Valencia test. Subsequently they moved heaven and earth to have an almost entirely new bike (at least chassis wise) by Mugello for Rossi.

I wonder if it's simpler than all that. Maybe Honda think that they need to understand their current bike a bit more before moving on. If they are going to A/B compare parts, then they need to know that what they're comparing to is optimally configured.
