22, you got access to a GoPro camera...would be cool as hell if you could vid your next race.

Haha chopper, if only he turned up eh?

L8, I don't no. I've looked into one but they were quite pricey. My friend has given me something similar but with the other issues I have had I haven't had time to mount it. Will try for the next race

Well, the head gasket went, and then caused detonation when water got into the combustion chamber..ouch!!! Apparently its a common issue on the standard head, so I have a new 2 part head with o-ring seals on order.

And now as a pallete cleanser, some nice piccies

#22...you ever hear of a guy from the US named Lake Speed? Met him on several occasions when he raced in the NASCAR series. I didn't find out till years later he was the 1978 World Karting champion...an accomplishment that was very much overlooked here. It's too bad he languished in a .... series with .... equipment for so many years. I personally think he could have done well in International open wheel racing.

More likely detonation caused the head gasket to fail mate. What octane fuel are you using? Maybe worth fitting a knocklink or something similar if it keeps detting.

Thanks Chopper, I considered that but discovered the gasket failing is a common issue on these things. We run a large main jut and static ignition (no retarder boxes etc) and its been fine for 2 years, its just the flat out nature of Silvy does pushed it over the edge. We use standard 97 pump fuel

Try using Shell V-power or Tesco momentum. Both are 99ron. Det will destroy your pistons and can cause Head gasket failure. The gasket failure wont cause det as the compression will be lowered by the breach of the gasket seal. Heat and high charge temps can also cause det, check your air filter is not in a place where it is pulling in hot air from the engine.

Don't worry Rog, all on the agenda

OK mate. Im very experienced when it comes to detonation. Feel free to pm me if you have run out of ideas of cause or cure.

Pic of a piston from an engine i once built. Could not get 99ron back then. Bear in mind this is also a forged piston.

Nice job!!! Jaysus fracking christ!!! Do you, like me, have a 'cabinet or horrors'?

Not as much as i did

i gave some knackered parts to some Bike shops and engineering firms to use for there "don't let yours get like this" shelf. I've got another piston with ring land failure caused by boost pressure . One thing i used to love in my engine building days was post mortems. Anyone can fit new parts but working out why it failed and solving that before fixing it was my thing. It's like a puzzle that requires methodical thinking.

That first pic of the cylinder head looks like a ring or spark plug electrode broke? or the head has gone porous.

Correct mate, the head was the original, and had suffered a spark plug tip failure that destroyed the barrel at some point, but I fitted a different barrel anyway so just changed it.Yeah I'm the same, i love diagnostics...
