Stoner might retire by the end of 2012 season.

Motochick has a salient point... Casey may be nagged into retirement!!!

Wow ..... now Adriana has gone from the angel of the paddock to the nag!!

Classic thread again!

I think the Stoner retiring talk is pure Euro media drivel.

He will retire tomorrow or later ....... only then will that Honda seat be open.

When he does retire it will be apt to say that his "Talent outweighs his Ambition".

Ive had a chance to meet Stoner a few years back. TBH I thought he might be a nice guy but his wife was very controlling with other girls around. We just wanted to say hello, but the look she gave us, and then to him, could have turned us to stone. I think she's wearing the pants in that relationship. With him having a kid she is unable to travel as frequently and I'm sure she is making him feel guilty about being away from her. I actually feel a bit sorry for him.

If he was to retire I would say it was because of her.

Is this you Jumkie??

Maybe he only wants one year contract so that he can jump on the Ducati once it has broken Rossi and sling it on the Pole for a race win first ride out!!!

Maybe he is being smart and positioning himself for another manufacturer shift in 2014 just so he can surpass Rossi and win championships on 3 manufacturers!!!

Or maybe it is just trash Euro media as suggested.

Yep, the wives can be contollin'. I know there would be no way in hell that my missus would let some hottie hold my umbrella and point her assets in my face if I was a racer on the grid.

Anyway, I hope he don't retire just yet. I wanna see how the second coming of Christ (Marquez) stacks up against Stoner in the next couple of years. It would be a pity if we were all deprived of that potential battle.

Stoner has always made it clear he was not going to be around for ages. I suspect next year is largely silly season speculation, but the time will be sooner, rather than later.

The odd thing to me is that one of his reasons for leaving is the dumbing down of MotoGP machines, but he is interested in taking up Aussie V8s when he is done.

That would depend on how one looked at it, did he retire or quit? If he retired on top, I suppose it would look legendary. But if it was perceived as quitting, then it would be infamy rather than fame. Who likes a quitter? A legend yes, a tainted legend.

Its an interesting argument. So if a rider retires so as not to lower his winning ratios, his Goathood would better be in tact? I guess Doohan was luck to leave so suddenly then. (I'm being a sarcastic .....) I'm not so sure my friend. I'm still grappling myself with it. I'm a bit conflicted with this idea that if you hang around much after you've won a but of titles, that those titles are any less bright. I've argued something entirely different about Rossi's titles (something lost of a few neobops), but I don't think I've made the case any tarnishing from hanging around after said titles.

I guess it has some neat cool factor that I don't quite understand. But its very tricky my friend. If it looks like one quit, people generally don't have kind feeling about quitters. I just hope that if he does hang up the boots, that he thinks about a good reason to tell the public or they will publish some negative words about it (rightly or wrongly). If he says he is leaving because of the rules, bikes, tires, I personally wouldn't have much respect for it (sorry if I disappoint my remaining Stoner fan friends). If he were to say, I just want to hang out with the family and go fishing with my daughter, I would say, man, this guy is to be admired and respected.

I am thinking rocky marciano, I don't think anyone thought he was a quitter. He retired undefeated, not just on top of course, and boxing is a sport where many even of the greats have held on too long, at risk to themselves; I think the latter can be true in motorsport, if to a lesser extent in modern times. Or herb elliott, with whom you may not be as familiar. Or as a counter example brett favre, who at least from my observation point now seems to be unpopular, and even reviled by some, in wisconsin.

My post was perhaps a little confused, as I have previously argued rossi's legacy can't be tainted, which I still believe, and as I said even in the recent post I still think he will be regarded as the GOAT long term. I don't believe Lawson's time at cagiva, which was a somewhat analogous situation, tarnished his legend, although he has remained a yamaha legend which may be harder for rossi to manage when he does retire, although jarvis is presumably not necessarily eternal.

If he still likes riding, the thrill of competition, the challenge of fixing the ducati, or even just still wants to make more money good luck to him, the same as for casey if he wants to quit for whatever reason . He doesn't look to be particularly enjoying himself just now though.

My point was that at the end of 2008 in particular, or 2009 he was totally unchallengeable, no-one was seriously suggesting agostini was his equal despite his greater number of championships or total gp wins on paper, stoner fans didn't and couldn't have much to say even about the overlapping part of rossi's career, etc. Of course if he somehow comes back for another championship, particularly on the ducati but nearly as much on a yamaha or whatever, it will expand and seal his legend as talpa has argued.

I could not care less what reason he gives for hanging up the leathers. If its family, i understand, if its the grind of the series, i understand, if its non inspiring machinery, i understand. When he decides to go, i will salute him and give thanks for the many hours of enjoyment he brought into my life..When you "walk" away from bike racing, or any sport that can leave you crippled or worse, with enough money to get you comfortably through life, you have won. I look at this mornings news and see where Jr Seau has committed suicide, what a shame. NFL related suicides are becoming epidemic. Knowing when to walk away shows smarts, something most athletes dont have an abundance of

Totally agree.

Reminds me of Mark Twain's quote: "The rumors of my death are greatly exaggerated."

It's his job.

He makes a good living from it.

Looking for a raise.

Who would'nt?

Will i miss him when he leaves?

No.

Why?

He doesn't love the sport.

No love= no effort to help it grow.

This is why I could never see him being a racing legend.

What bollocks.

There were a few quotes noone bothered to mention. Stoner says that Yamaha has vastly improved their corner exit speed and this has helped not only Lorenzo but Crutchlow as well. He feels that Cal may soon be a regular at the front and this is something he does not want to see.

He states " Did anyone see #35? On several corners he almost took out half the field. Look at Nicky. After lap 2 the right side of his bike looked like it was painted black. He's too dangerous. I'm not sure I wanna race much longer with guys like that."

He goes on about the British press and how they are failing to report Cals incident. "Did anyone even say a peep about the incident. No. Because they all have British Derangement Syndrome. They are so wrapped up in producing a British World Champion they turn a blind eye. I always respected reporter David Emmet for his ability to cut through the BS but he's been silent on this as well

Damn. Once again Casey delivers a no holds barred interview

MotoChick noticed and peeped... but she and Adrianna don't along so Casey is ignoring her!
