And how do you suppose the brain-trust here at powerslide.net gather up the information to form hype? It's through reading about riders, teams and manufacturers. Joe Nobody generally doesn't get a press pass and appointments to interview Valentino Rossi, Livio Suppo or Jerry Burgess, so we have to take whatever news we get. And many times, the news we get comes from a PR firm representing the rider, the team, the sponsor or the manufacturer. We are spoon-fed hype everyday, it's just a matter of recognizing it.

Slide, take this beating in stride. Don't take it to heart. Its just how we do around here. Its all good man. But yeah, I think you're mistaken on this one. Hype is a lot of self promotion. I agree that we can anticipate this as you said, but the truth is most of the world gets suckered into the hype, hence in all practical purpose, hype is the effect of self-promotion.

Second point, about the ice kart race. I think it was all just fun and games with .0001% element of competition. I wouldn't make anything out of him finishing ahead of the F1 guys. Perhaps you didn't read this part in the story:
