Silverstone Race Discussion (Spoiler Alert! You All)

I think pedro would do well for Suzuki. Honda should be smiling with stoner, and hairball he just needs to "grow up", I think the boy will be very fast and win once he glue's his ... to the seat. Anyone wanna chip in on some Liquid Nail for hairball?

<
<
<
nah liquid nail is not enough for hairball hes ... is too itchy at this point in time he has to win every race hes like a dog after a bone

I am not sure finishing 15 seconds behind your teammate can really be described as "rode brilliantly". But on the other hand Dovi is doing a good job this year, third in the championship on 83 points. For comparison: Simoncelli is currently 11th on 32 points.

Then watch the race again. Dovi knew he couldn't put in the consistent times that Casey was reeling off without crashing, but still managed to keep a rampant charging Simoncelli at bay. Also look at the gap Dovi had opened up just before Marco crashed. Sic crashed out trying to close it......rider error. The point Tom made is that Andrea didn't put a foot wrong in appalling conditions under immense pressure from Moto GP's very own Ruben Xaus.

And the Brit Rossifans, they are defecting to Simo ....... if he gives them the slightest provocation, and yet Dovi would be a better bet
<

Barry's right. Levi and I were discussing this yesterday, and based on this weekend's evidence I can testify that there is already a steady diaspora of disaffected migrants flowing out of the yellow sea and seeking asylum the Simo camp. Many of whom I might add, stopped off for a brief tour of Lorenzo's land in the process. When Valentino retires, a large percentage of Brit Rossi fans will lose interest in the sport. The others will be contributaries to this steady flow in the direction of Marco because he appears larger than life and the Brits love a personality. There are two main categories of Brit race fans. The die hard enthusiasts who are fans of the sport first and foremost - within which fall a great many Rossi fans; and the bandwagon glory hunters - fickle fans - who soon lose interest when their hero stops winning. It's no different to armchair Manchester United fans who have absolutely no affiliation with Manchester, purport to support United for no other reason than the fact that they tend to win and overlook their local team simply because they may be the underdog.

Last year there were probably half a dozen people walking around the circuit in Simo wigs. This year, they were everywhere you looked. Marco is a character, but over and above the comedy hairball, he could easily look like a clown if he doesn't rapidly find some race-day finesse.

This race was a triumph of the grinders--a hockey term referring to the glamor-less players who have more work ethic, perseverance, and sport-smarts than raw skill. Racing rarely shows any love for the grinders, but Silverstone was their day in the sun. Stoner was the only alien to place in the top 5 on Sunday.

Stoner - Masterclass

Dovi - Future uncertain, but a great ride at Silverstone. Happy to be in Jolly Old England where he won his first race?

Edwards - He should race until he is 50 whether it's GP or WSBK

Hayden - Rode his own race, everyone fell away. Without fuel worries, he set fastest lap. Metaphor for his career.

Bautista - Hope he gets to try something better than a Suzuki

Rossi - I'm sure Yamaha is looking quite nice about now. Solid ride considering qualifying position, but rain bailed him out.

Abraham - Not Hailwood, but it's interesting to see how well this rich kid is going on the satellite Ducati his daddy bought for him

Elias - first top 10 of the season. something to build on?

Aoyama - I expect more from this guy even if he is only on a satellite Honda

Capirossi - returning to Ducati has not been fruitful

Barbera - I thought we might see something from him this season

DePuniet - good of him to finish, I really hope he gets something competitive to ride next year. WSBK on a factory Ducati? Roche?

Simo - bust out the training wheels for this kid b/c the Honda repair bills are soaring

Lorenzo - uncharacteristic mistake. Looked like an engine braking problem b/c the rear was gone before he hit the apex.

Spies - Please don't waste your talents in this fuel limited nightmare.

I watched the race and I do not need to watch again. Dovi finished 15 seconds behind Stoner. His fastest lap was 1 second slower than Stoner's. I do not consider his race brilliant.

Then you show us how it's done instead
<

Actually I do, because having experienced the appalling conditions from the relative comfort of a roofed grandstand as opposed to an armchair - and I use the word comfort very loosely - I consider all the guys that made it home to have ridden brilliant races. Casey broke early, and masterfully established an indomitable rhythm while Dovi was embroiled in a fight from which he emerged the last one standing. Stoners lead was by then unassailable. Of course, he could have crashed trying to bridge it - but then that would be 'hairbrained'.

Im not sure you fully appreciate how bad the conditions were. When the riders set off the spray was so bads that us sat in the grandstand could not see any of the bikes on track. I think it was stoner who said his visor filled with water and he had trouble seeing. If he had that problem at the front just imagine how bad it was for the riders in the pack. On top of that it was windy and very cold. These riders later said they could not feel their hands because of the wet and cold. Stoner was shivering on the podium. To make out Dovi didn't do a great ride says to me you have either never ridden in heavy rain freezing your bollocks off or you had your head up your arse rather than watched the race.

The issue here is that you are suggesting that Stoner had a brilliant ride and that everyone else just rode. A statement like that suggests that you do not appreciate the level of riding in motogp or the difficulty of the conditions. There was 1 winner on Sunday but there were 12 brilliant riders.

Spot on Tom

I never suggested that "everyone else just rode", you simply made that up. In fact I consider that a number of riders had a very good race yesterday, Dovi was one of them, others were Hayden, Bautista, Abraham (since he's a rookie) etc. For me the really brilliant rides were Stoner and Edwards (who raced with the recently injured collarbone).

Very true but then you also have to count Dovi in that, seeing as he finished between the two you mention.

well what can i say....

epic ride from stoner consistant with good pace....

well done colin
<
bout time
<

nice job hayden....

rossi better pick the ball back up.... just glad not to hear about the shoulder and admits he was the prob for poor performance.

BUT i think the race should have been stopped halfway and points awarded for possitions... what awfull weather

Well, if it would have been F1...

I see this bit as what is really killing MGP ( well as compared to what it used to be ). Folks go on about how boring it is etc. failing to make the link between the fact that its riding skills that will get their rider up to the front, not bowling balls or chickens or spacemen acts.

What next ........ riders pulling up in front of a stand and giving an impromptu vaudeville routine
<

PS. Simo is a vaudeville act on legs ........... not a good rider.

Chicken and the Egg........... While I agree, to some extent it also brings in the crowds ( right or wrong.......some of us are purists who really get off on the ability of riders.....alot of people turn up to see the silly side show stunts at the end. That, right or wrong, puts some more bums on seats in the grand stand, keeps the money pouring in, and our sport going.

For better or worse..........

Some pull it off well,..Schwantz for example ( feet out wheelies ect ).......Rossi might have been a bit over the top in some eyes, but at least most of it was funny,

Lorenzo never did that crap in 250's ect, and when he started doing it in Moto.........well to me it just seemed fake, and a rip off of Rossi's mucking around...........I thought it stank worse, as it seemed less sincere, and out of character for him.

........wasn't it funny when he started sinking in that dam though !!
<
<
<

Anyway, as long as the majority stay true to their personalities, then it's only the odd person that will be that way. Makes it somewhat bearable I guess...........

As for Simo.......I haven't seen him do the clown act ( maybe I haven't been paying enough attention), and whether he matures into a rider who can stay on the bike, yet maintain his crazy pace, remains to be seen.

Lots of riders have been the same as him, and matured into very capable riders.

Rossi in 125's /250's

Lorenzo when he first jumped on the Moto

Stoner at LCR

Pedrosa when he first got on the Moto,

and so on and so forth back through the ages.

One positive to it is, Motorcyclists are a diverse bunch,........there are some out and out brains with machinery, there are the steady Sunday riders, blidingly fast blokes.........and some absolute clowns, both laugh-wise and the dangerous goons who are quick, but have lots of x-rays, hospital bills and contribute to the retirement funds of bike manufacturers on a massive weekly scale.

God bless us all.

And at least our sport still reflects the general populus of the motorcyling community.

.........look at F1......man, there used to be some characters back in the day................now, most are little corperate robots spilling forth the same politically correct diatribe at the post race table and media events.

Keep the clowns I say, lest we turn into the irrelevant money making machine that is F1.

Sure, they may get up our noses............but it gives us all something to love or hate.

If you like the clowns .......... stop sooking about boring races and hire a party clown when the races are on.

Back to Silverstone ........

anyone notice that Mick Doohan was pretty prominent again in the Honda pits. I wondered if he was there for "moral support" for Casey at a track where the fans can be a bit ......... special.
<
<
<

Good to see Surtees present the 1st place trophy to Stoner ....... Stoner seemed chuffed with it.

Interesting snippit for me ........ they also dragged Ewan Macgregor out and he was also on display in the Honda pits.

1. I thought he was a Rossi person
<
whats the go there?

2. I was not much of a Ewan MacG. fan ....... until I heard he had adopted a little girl they met in Mongolia on one of the bike trips he did. Anyone know if that was one of the little girls in the pits with him?

Have to say they did a good job of Silverstone this year ........ may turn out to be the venue/event of the season.
