SEPANG: 2nd Official MotoGP TEST

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (michaelm @ Feb 25 2010, 04:47 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>5. Ben Spies USA Monster Yamaha Tech 3 2min 1.843 sec (42 laps)
6. Colin Edwards USA Monster Yamaha Tech 3 2min 1.897 sec (35 laps)

Give ben spies a full factory bike.

Judging (perhaps foolishly) from the test times to date, "Team Fun" is going to be fun to watch this year!

Yeah, sure... Of all Spanish and Italian riders, picking out Simoncelli as one who always had only the best served in his platter...

You can't give him what he already got.

I suspect that he will have a bike closer to factory than we've seen in a long time from a satelite team. Btw, that's probably to some degree for all satellite teams. I doubt they can use yesteryears engines with the new rules and it would be little or nothing to gain by tuning down the satellite bikes, except for the humiliation of being beaten by one

^Except for the Ducati satellite bikes which are and have been basically the same as factory bikes... That's what Kallio said anyway, having raced both bikes.

Nice to see your x-ray vision is still with us. So we have three factory spec Yamahas? So Edwards bike is the only satellite? Its hard for me to see past the fancy paint.

Only a moron like you would suggest that they design two different bikes or differentiate now at the start. Just like always when there are important regulation changes they all start basically with the same bikes, factory and satellite. The difference come over the season but that's why Ben got Yamahas spot at the Tech 3 team.
That's just simple logic and has little to do with X-rays, but then again you have to be able to follow the logic, something that was never a strong point of yours. You are sooo much better at putting things you don't understand down to x-ray and goggles.

If Spies are anything what most people here hope he is, Edwards will probably be the last to receive upgrades, so I guess you could call his bike the only satellite.
But rules tightens and the 800's mature so don't expect a huge difference though.

Some snippets from the official press releases at Paddock Talk:

" Dovizioso said he was pleased with the progress he and his team are making in the limited testing time available..."
Yeah, making Pedrobot look like a slug is pleasing... He also said, "...and I give that Ben guy the finger for passing me in last year's final race... I will keep my factory ride ahead of those pesky satellite Yamahas this year..." - but this wasn't reported!

"The Spaniard [Dani Pedrosa] was less satisfied than his team-mate with the results of the day as he struggled somewhat with the feeling from his machine. The 24-year-old was unhurt in a slow-speed fall..."
Another year another disappointment... plus c'est le change...

From Spies: "I automatically picked up where I left off here because my fourth lap today was only three-tenths slower than my best time at the first test. I'm close to half-a-second faster than the last test and I'm more consistent. My fastest laps were all on tyres that had done race distance and that makes me happier than anything else. It's not so much that I got under the 2.02 barrier but I did it on worn tyres and I think that will be one of my big strong points this season. I feel like I'm getting closer to finding the limit of the Bridgestone tyres and I'm getting more comfortable on them, but we still need to do more work. Today we played around with the bike a bit more than previously just to understand a few things but it was nothing major. Some changes were good and some were bad and I feel we made some important progress and I definitely had more grip. Everyday I'm trying to learn something and go a little bit quicker and that's what I achieved."
More and more impressed with the smarts and maturity of Ben and his approach... now why is his mom still hangin' about?

From Collie: "Yamaha might have dominated last year but they definitely haven't just taken the easy option and sat back. They've worked really hard on improving what was already a great bike, and some of the improvements have really helped me. I did more work on the new swingarm and I like it. It seems to help the front and the rear of the bike and it gives me a lot more confidence. And it helps a lot with my front feeling, which I had an issue with a bit last year."
Love team Texas... the best "team" in MGP in years!!

RC212V comments:
"...he [Pedrosa] came off his bike without injuring himself, after the front tyre of his Honda RC212V lost grip."
"[Pedrosa] was working hard with this technical team to improve the suspension of his machine..."
"[Pedrosa] declared that he was not completely satisfied with the performance of his machine. Dani insisted that they still have a lot of work to do to improve the overall level of competitiveness."
"... the bike was moving around quite a lot and we didn’t find the solution for that today." Dani P
"Marco Melandri... focused on suspension work..."
" the Japanese rider [Aoyama] struggled with front end problems later in the day."
How's that Ohlins suspension workin' so far guys?

Simoncelli:
" Today wasn’t easy because of the heat, which everybody knows I don’t like..."
Ahhh, poor baby...
"If I look at the lap times of course I cannot be happy, but now it’s not the moment to look at lap times."
Yeah, and you really shouldn't look at Ben's lap times...!!! Some of you guys think Simoncelli is rookie-of-the-year material? WTF?

Casey on the Ducati:
"...the bike feels well balanced and the characteristics of the new engine make it easier to ride in general. We definitely have room for improvement in terms of the set-up – we could find some more traction, for example, although we are still better off in this respect than we were here last year. We could also improve the bike under braking, especially in the hard braking zones, and find some more edge grip but it is a case of refining a few details. We have a good base to work from..."
Sounds like we're happy with the base package for this year...

From Nicky:
"We’ve been working on trying to solve a little front-end chatter and we did that a little by changing to the carbon swingarm. The arm is ok enough but I didn’t want to push it too hard.”
WTF - is the carbon arm gonna snap?

And finally from poor little Alex E:
"During the morning I wasn't feeling very well: last night I didn't sleep so well and I had a bit of headache. I hope I will be able to have a good night of sleep so that I can be at the best tomorrow."
Ahhhhh... what a shame... maybe mommy will come to the track tomorrow to make you some chicken soup and stroke your hair!!!!

Marvel Comics forgot about the Superhero named BabelFish.

Unlike Superman, Babel can actually see things not only from the edge of his grandstand seats (neck fully perched of course) that would make the Man of Steel jealous, but can do it from the comfort of his Lazy Boy strategically placed in front of the TV (...HD of course). Ah, the resident Tire Expert (remember you could tell us how bad the tires "shredded" on TV--let's forget about that pesky detail that in fact afterward they disclosed the tires were actually looking like "new" because they had mistakenly chosen too hard of a tire); has turned factory spec differentiator. Babel, your credibility is truly fantastic (in the realm of your wild imagination).

Well now that we have your superhuman services, tell me, how many factory spec Hondas are on the grid? (I'm curious because I'd like to get some insight on the discrepancy between Marco2 vs Ped/Dov.

Yamaha: M1 development conflict unlikely
Yamaha motor racing managing director, Lin Jarvis, believes that a strong showing by all four Yamaha riders at the first Sepang test signals another competitive year for the M1 – and means there is little chance of Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo 'arguing' over bike development.

Reigning seven time MotoGP champion Rossi has steered the YZR-M1 project since his 2004 debut, but 2009 runner-up Lorenzo has been promised a bigger input in bike development this year to help support his own title aspirations.

As such, Crash.net asked Jarvis what will happen if Rossi and Lorenzo wanted to take development of the M1 in two different directions.

“<u>All four bikes are pretty much identical at the moment</u> and at the end of the first test of the year we've had Valentino in first, Jorge in third, Ben in fifth and Colin in seventh,” replied Jarvis, speaking before news of Lorenzo's hand injury in a motocross fall.

“That means the new bike is ok. That it is already 'set' and working well for four different riders with four different styles.

“So personally I expect that the requests for developments will be small deviations or nuances. I don't think anybody will request to totally re-engineer anything radical with the bike. So I'm not worried in that respect,” Jarvis concluded.

Lorenzo will miss the second Sepang test, which starts for MotoGP race riders tomorrow (Thursday), as a result of his hand injury.

The Spaniard could also be ruled out of the final pre-season test, at Qatar in mid-March.

Jum you pick some odd times for your inevitable Babel-bashing... Semantics regarding definitions of "factory" or "satellite" aside, do you disagree with the theory that the tech specs of the four Yamahas are closer now (like today on the track in Malaysia) than they were say, at the end of last season, or, say, midway through the coming season?

Babel's original statement on the subject showed none of the Steve Austin style vision espoused in the tyre wear/TC threads, "I suspect that he will have a bike closer to factory than we've seen in a long time from a satelite team.", yet you choose to spin and prevaricate this simple opinion into your pet-peeve "vision" issue... Are you havin' a bad day? Are you bored?

Not sure why you feel the need to interject while I'm having a go at Babel, as you must have been elected the playground ref; but...

Babel's statement was definitive (since you bring up semantics, you do understand this word, right?:

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Babelfish @ Feb 25 2010, 10:45 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>You can't give him what he already got. <responding to a poster calling to give Spies a factory spec bike.>

He's declared, they are identical. (Of course he later says they are very close, which is what you quoted, typical covering of all the bases letting him get away with iron clad assertions--I call ........).

You see, that’s not what Babel said, as I’m sure you understand English (I say this because Fish has sometimes has pulled the ‘lost in translation’ card). They either have the “same” .... or they have “close” to the same ..... (You decided to interject on something I am not disputing, yeah, they are similar and closer now, but Fishy said they are the same.)

This is why I call Babel on it, because he has a tendency of making definitive statements based on his imagination. Iron clad assertions like the infamous "Stoner uses the most TC" & of course "Rossi's tires were 'shredding'". It's Babel's MO when he wants to either denigrate or excuse a performance depending on his given inclination of the rider (love Rossi, hate Stoner). Well he's extended this subtle (perhaps for you) way of explaining why Spies is doing relatively good. (Obviously you haven't picked up on Babel's skepticism toward Spies, of which he will now deny or go back and edit).

Definitive? No. Kinda reminds me of when Valentino said him and Lorenzo had the “same” bike, only for Lorenzo in another interview to admit, he was still waiting on some parts that his teammate had; leaving Valentino to backpedal later. And considering the source, its more like--translation, 'yeah, we've given all our riders the best stuff and 'nearly' the same ....; (oh really?)

As far as my day, well it going great thanks for asking. Unlike Babel, who comes on here and spits some .... then announces he's "having a bad day" to somehow sucker the bleeding hearts into giving him a pass for a ........ post.

Ya know, it's not as if Yamaha needs to be as blatant as Honda, and assign the satellite teams a duff motor that's running 1000K slower.   All that's required to take the edge off the T3 bikes is an older set of firmware and software.

Further, it's entirely possible that Yamaha (probably with some 'help' from #46) has chosen to deliberately slow the Texans.  No, there's no proof that this is happening, but it DOES make strategic sense to reign in the sat. teams just a little.  In an ideal world, the T3 riders would be just fast enough to steal occasional points from Stoner and Pedrobot, without threatening the factory squad.  Making this happen may or may not be practical, but don't think that people at Yam haven't considered the strategy.  If Babbel is gonna break out the X-Ray goggles, he needs to bring a laptop too, and compare software code.  Are you up to the task, dude?
<

As for #46, if he has enough clout to take Jorge out of the engineering/setup loop, arranging to provide slightly goofy software to the T3 team should be a piece of cake:

"We geev Collin same software dat make Lorenzo high side so good, OKayee?!
