Fans of other riders want rossi to be there, even apart from the opportunity to see his riding artistry and tactical mastery, because wins against him by other riders have extra significance. This is because he is the benchmark, not because we hate him, and I am sure the other riders have the same attitude. I would not necessarily see some rossi fans as illustrative of a similar benchmark in terms of being motogp fans though.
I do feel extra sympathy for valentino with this injury because I have a rough idea how painful it was, and because I suspect his bike tried to kill him, as not uncommonly seems to be the case with dorna's wonderful 800c safety formula. The news on his injury with them closing the wound after only two days sounds very good btw, and he may now have a recovery time similar to a severe closed fracture; they would not have closed it if the wound did not look clean or if there was likely to be ongoing soft-tissue swelling, suggesting the soft tissue injury component may not have been too severe and they are not concerned about contamination of the wound/infection.
Since others have perhaps inevitably brought stoner into a thread concerning valentino's injury, which I would not have done, I will comment that if an injury or illness is disabling it is disabling whatever its nature. When stoner did have an orthopaedic problem verified by clinica mobile, with X-ray evidence and for which he required surgery this was also dismissed as an excuse. As an aside, it did look to me that someone closely resembling casey stoner and riding a ducati fought to the last corner on sunday for 4th place in a race he had no chance of winning, a circumstance where he apparently felt the need to feign illness last year.
