Well Rodger - I for one am glad to know you don't live in them - even if to my untrained eye - you seem to be the essence of the kind of tough guys that do. Happy to know also that you're so egalitarian as to not judge people for being poor and uneducated. Too bad you can't extend that philanthropic view towards a bunch of misguided Irish in NY. I understand about there being long time hard feelings about all the bombings back in the day. I was in the UK twice when numerous Britons were killed and was horrified. I get it. In any event, it's a shame you find it necessary to be so pedantic - when all I want to is have a bit of fun with you. A pity really.

Well i served in the British army in the 80's. You may call them misguided, i call them terrorists. Maybe if some of these "misguided" New yorkers had come with us down the Falls road they would have seen there funding going to "good" use.

My point is, Dressing up in tartan kilts on St Patricks day playing Scotland the brave waving a 3 leaf clover while passing the "support IRA" bucket around is not a culture. It's more a desperate attempt to form one.

By the way, do they grow potato's in New York ?

They couldn't grow them in Ireland at one time, hence why they migrated to the US and other places as an alternative to starvation, not that this is redressed by or justifies supporting the IRA, who in reality liked blowing up or otherwise killing people for its own sake, as is the case with most such groups.

As an ex aquaintence of mine from Norn Irn or Ulster, call it what you want said to me, I I had the time to tell you, you wouldn't understand.

It was a complicated issue with many contradictions. But at the end of the day between the late 60's to 98 around 3530 people lay dead and over 50,000 casualty's. That's a lot of bullets and bombs that were paid for by somebody !

Putting together a list of famous people is not a country culture hahahaha, if anything that proves my point about america making theirs up. Cultures are made of many many years of its people ways, view and traditions. America had no people of its own, even the indibums came from the Caribbean i've read. America is made up of people from all corners of the earth who started to settled there a few hundred years ago. America takes the pieces of those cultures they like or think looks cool, rolls it all together and ends up with a right fruit salad of a culture. England is going the same way, once a rich culture that's now so diluted by the influx of immigrants. Their culture to be celebrated while ours is hidden into obscurity. I say England as the Scotish, Irish and the largely ignored Welsh are ALLOWED to keep theirs.

Maybe you should put up a wall before the Mexicans start moving in.

From what i have seen the Mexicans have a rich and interesting culture. Maybe you lot on the eastern seaboard should take some of that and make it your own. A lot more respectable than the very plastic but very damaging one you have adopted.

Who was strangely remarkably successful on U.S. TV for a great many years

Tis true that some Americans think anything with a British accent is somehow more erudite. My wife loves all those Masterpiece Theater boil-in-bag, paint-by-numbers, detective shows with their mind-numbing red-herrings and two dimensional characterizations. I think with Benny Hill, the women loved the accents and the men loved the tarts with the big knockers.

Well Christian, I don't live in council fats ,never have nor would i judge those who do. As it happens my Great grandfather was a Lord Admiral. Not that it matters one iota.

Why would you? After all you know it wouldn't mean diddly to citizens of country that fought a bloody war to be free from the tyranny of folks who believed that they were appointed by God himself to rule and tax the serfs.

Read my posts carefully Rog. I already stated that I was in the UK twice when the bombings were constantly in the news and how horrified I was.

.... me. You think middle-class Irish are the predominant culture here? Maybe you think Tammany Hall is where the city is run from and the fire department still has shoot-outs with the police. It's not 1908 here. Your concept of what NY like is unbelievably provincial. NY has every kind of racial group you can imagine. Ellis Island and the Statue Of Liberty are the world's most iconic places associated with immigrants. New Yorkers as a whole CELEBRATE the mix of all these cultures. You really need to come and visit; see what a true international city is like. Actually we have the opposite problem from yours. New York is getting richer and whiter every day. I'm looking to buy a house in the country to get away from all spoiled white trustafarians that are overwhelming the city.

predominant enough for several of your Presidents to visit Ireland and express sympathy. Not a lot of action was taken in preventing the decades long flow of funds either. In fact it didn't really stop until 9:11 when you got a taste of what we endured for 30 years.

Never been keen on knowing all the esoteric distinctions of rank in the British military. I do know that historically the great majority of officers in the Queens army - were appointed not by virtue of merit - but rather by whether they went to Sandhurst, Dartmouth or Cranwell and what royal connections they had. So many British were needlessly slaughtered in Afghanistan in the 1800s and then again during the Indian Mutiny because so many of the high ranking officers were dithering aristocratic dillitantes empowered to govern hostile territories on the basis of their chumminess with Lord this or that or Sir so-and-so despite their lack of experience with any real action in the field. Of course this kind of nepotism is common in most armies. My 2nd wife's father was a rear admiral in the Navy. He saw a lot actual action, and was awarded all kinds of medals for combat heroism and retired with honors. Very respected by his men. The guy was a total ....... Klan red-neck who got drunk every night and let his dogs crap in the garage downstairs and his whole house smelled like dog ..... I've had lots of ex military buddies and nothing they've ever told me made me romanticize about the whole mystique of the fighting man. I like reading Kipling as much (if not more) than the next guy - but the reality of it all isn't all that appealing.

If we couldn't keep the illegal immigrants and the heroin from coming in - think how much harder it would have been to keep the money from flowing out. A great many dock-workers back in the day were Irish and so were the cops. Moving money was so easy back then. Everybody complains that the USA wants to be the Police Of The World and then when it suits them they ..... that we're not. Damned if we do and damned if we don't.

Yup, you're not wrong. Thankfully very different now. My Lord Admiral great grandfather lost the lot gambling i'm told. Would have been nice to inherit a country estate with some sexy maids, but fate told me i had to earn it myself . may not have the maids but i do own a large house , kids at uni and half a bottle of rum. Just wish i hadn't had to work so hard to get it. Gambling low life scum ...... me. lol

Just shows that you shouldn't believe everything you read.

The 'indians' came across the Siberian Land Bridge 45,000 years ago and finished by colonizing Tierra Del Fuego about 5,000 years ago. The only peoples in the Caribbean came from the two continents.

You must be somewhere near me. I'm about 10 minutes away from Burley. I still love the place, but maybe that's because I go there for the enjoyment, not because I have to.

So dogging is still big in the NF, then? :D
