What do you think now then?

What a little star we have, at last, in Lewis Hamilton. World Champ in his rookie year? I reckon it's a strong possibility.

For sure.. he outpaced team mate Alonso for most of the weekend and during the race.

What a debut!

I think World Champ is just a little bit optimistic!

He will do well, a few wins this year hopefully.

Raikkonen, Massa and Alonso will beat him in the championship though.

Nevertheless GO HAMILTON!!!

Well, you have to be optimistic!

But take on board the facts.........
His first F1 race!
He did outpace Alonso!

Kimi and Fernando et al must be in shock this morning (or when they get up,.... if they can sleep!).

We'll just have to see, won't we?
<

Not World Champion, not this year anyway. Still, it seems like a brilliant race, and hopefully an end of year podium isn't too unrealistic. I'll wait for more than one race before giving judgement
<

2007 world champion - no

future world champion - yes

Can't see him maintaining this form all year but we'll see.

You never know...

Yeah, GO LEWIS!!!! HAMILTON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2007 world champion is indeed a bit too optimistic imo, but for sure he will win (a) race(s) this year!!

I can't wait to see him win his 1st GP (and I don't even care if he beats the hell out of Kimi..there's just something bout lewis that I like A LOT).

Its funny because I don't remember anyone making such an impact on their first GP. To give the world champ a run for his money (Alonso has admitted himself that he was lucky to beat Lewis today) takes some doing. I think we could have not just a potential World Champion on our hands, but possibly a potential legend.

I don't wanna get carried away in terms of this year. He has started well but he may still make mistakes and he has a lot to learn. There will be tough weekends and i wouldn't just assume he will win races in 07, but its not unrealistic so i'm gonna hope he does.

In the future i think he has what it takes to go all the way, lets hope it happens soon. Its only taken him one race to show he is better than any other Brit on the grid so thats a start.

Err sorry to burst your bubble but Alonso outqualified and outraced Hamilton quite comfortably. He just took a low risk approach and overtook Lewis in the 2nd pit stop. Once ahead he just blew him away (almost a second per lap in the last stint).

That said it was indeed a very good debut for Hamilton. The best since Jaques Villeneuve (2nd) in 1996.

I think he has the potential to be a champion in the future, no way this season, wins could be possible if McLaren get closer to Ferrari and something happens to Alonso.

Sorry, but I do believe that is the biggest load of twaddle I've read on this site!

Your man Alonso is the most undeserved F1 world champ since '97. Lewis will prove that this year. I have never seen a World Title won in such a cowardly manner as Fernando in 2005. He is just a stop gap until the new guard take over.

Tell me I'm an ....., and then I'll prove you wrong. I know the race was on in the middle of the night, but you really should have stayed awake!

Sorry but I also disagree! Why on earth would Alonso want to sit back when his main contender Kimi Raikkonen is blitzing away into the distance? I definately wouldn't just be sitting back, neither would you! Fine, he overtook Hamilton tactically in the end but not on the racetrack. Hamilton out-driven Alonso comfortably.

Well done Alex, I'm glad I've got a bit of back up so early on this one.

Brazil '05, in my eyes, was disgraceful, and an insult to the F1 world. World Champion my arse!

Wow, the first time I've heard such remarks for Alonso. I don't like him, but almost every F1 fan I meet (which is not that much really) is an Alonso fan so this is quite something new.
<

Anyway, excuse my ignorance Burky, but what about Brazil 05 that makes you feel like that? I might have forgotten something about that race...

OK, I'll explain.

Aside from the fact that overtaking has become almost impossible in F1, and whilst at Renault you could almost guarantee both Alonso and Fisichella would hit the front by turn one, giving them quite literally a head start, I have another problem with Fernando.
Brazil, 2005. He only needed to finish third. He led from the start again, opened up a gap,.........and then slowed and just 'let' the 2 McLarens through. No hint of a fight, no hint of a race. Now I do understand that the title is important, but so are the millions of spectators who pay to watch a 'race'. As a fan, I'm not impressed. As an artist, I'm not inspired!

I really should be a fan, we share the same birthday!! But that makes it worse, because it's not the attitude of a dominant male lion!!!!

Ohhh, so that's why. Hmm, I don't remember that may be because it's bittersweet for me at that time: A 1-2 for McLaren but Kimi lost the WDC.

And I have no problems with my birthdaymate, very much alike.

Also don't agree with your first part..
For sure Alonso ''outqualified'' Lewis (.25 tenths aint that big of a gap to me, but yeah fact is FA started from 2nd place and lewis from 4th). Also a fact is that Lewis did a way better job at the start of the race, he overtook Fernando and he was in front of him 2/3 of the race. That's definitely not because FA took a ''low risk approach''. I'm sure he did what he could, but Hamilton just did an extremely good job. But in the end Fernando did overtake him after his 2nd pitstop. I guess almost everyone expected to see FA do better than Lewis anyway. After all he's the champ and lewis is a rookie, but damn..that rookie impressed me a lot!!!!
<
I'm a definitely a fan!!

GO LEWIS!!!!!!!

You said it right, the title indeed was important! I agree that it would have been nice if he would have fought in that race and showed some spectacular stuff, BUT to be honest I can't blame him that much. He already won 7 GP's, it wasn't like he was just consistent and not winning races. He won enough races races that season. In the end the title is what matters. He deserved to win that season, but I don't think Kimi would have been an undeserved champ that year. He always was behind FA that season. He had to take risks, he had to attack, he had to fight hard, that's exactly what he did, but sometimes you can fight as hard as you want, but if it isn't meant to happen it won't happen. FA had the more reliable car, and FA did wht he had to, to win the title. Rather saw Kimi win of course, but hey, it's all cool, I was happy for Nando, and he did deserve it. Definitely don't think he's overrated or anything.

Very simple, Kimi would have won anyways, he was by far the fastest, so the best result possible was second. He could be all over Lewis, risking overheating his engine, a crash or a mistake to get 2nd or he could just follow behind, don't stress the engine and put the hammer down in the 2 laps he had when Lewis pitted. Same result much less risk.

Anyway, excuse my ignorance Burky, but what about Brazil 05 that makes you feel like that? I might have forgotten something about that race...

Now before talking about Brazil 05, remember Hungary 05, Renault and Alonso learnt a lesson there, they qualified 6th because that's the pace the car had, in the first corner he got hit by Ralf and 0 points. The lesson to be learnt is that midfield is a dangerous place to be in the first corner of a race. So when the time came in Brazil 05 where they needed to be 3rd and couldn't afford a DNF they went out to quali with very little fuel onboard, that way they got pole position, and secured a safe position for the first corner, the drawback is that it's a bad strategy to win a race, because you will have to stop soon and get stuck behind traffic, but since the McLarens had proved to be much faster there wasn't really a realistic chance of winning the race.
So the race folded out as planned, the much faster McLarens took the lead when Alonso pitted early and dissapeared into the distance while Alonso drove to 3rd position and clinched the title.

Apparently to Mr ..... this is being a coward and winning a title undeservedly.
