I think your concern is well founded. As initially reported it sounded like "just" prolonged concussion. But now it seems he sustained permanent nerve and/or muscle damage for which corrective surgery was required and which as you imply may not necessarily work. It was a very bad weekend in sepang.

Farck me! If that turns out to be the case - he'd be mad to risk re-injuring himself. I had no idea that the results of concussion could last that long. Even a few days to weeks are really upsetting. Been there. Got hit head on by a housewife in a Volkswagon years ago. Went home from hospital 4 days later and the room was spinning around every time I lay down. For about three days I was asking my wife every 15 minutes if she had checked the mail. Can't imagine suffering with that kind of damage for months. What an awful prospect. A broken bone is a whole other kettle of fish.

I think it is very valid to speculate concerning spies and pedrosa swapping, particularly since both are up for new contracts for 2013 and marquez can't be on a factory honda till 2014 at the earliest. Spies was a fabulous superbike rider, and I myself wonder whether the more raw power-orientated honda 800 may have suited him better than the yamaha, while the yamaha 800 seemed like more of a cornerspeed/250 style bike, and dani was an excellent 250 rider, where he beat both stoner and lorenzo. Spies has had his problems on the yamaha, particularly his starts which may relate to his size, but on the week-end in Assen when everything came together for him he smoked everyone including stoner, so even on the yamaha it would be reasonable to think there is some potential there.

I agree that the Yamaha as a corner speed style bike is more suited to a 250 style rider where the Honda is more of a get it in hard, pull it up, turn it and shoot it out hard similar to a SBK. Therefore it is entirely plausible that a Spies on a Honda would be a better prospect than Spies on a Yamaha. I would love to see Dovi take the Yamaha seat over Pedrosa not because I dislike Pedrosa but because I like to see the under dog get up and stick it to the silver spooners!
