LeMans 2013 Race Thread

Sounds like it's 2007 all over again.

In 2007 people claimed Stoner was TC kid despite his riding style, the fact he was sliding the bike through most corners and all the evidence to the contrary.

Look at Lorenzo. Never a wheel out of line, never a black line left on the track and then when he has no chance to set up TC he is at the back of the prototypes claiming uncontrolled wheel spin.

Do some investigative journalism and you will find I am right. Here is the question for you. "Rossi, what is the difference between your use of electronics and Lorenzo's and does that have anything to do with Lorenzo's metronomic lap times as opposed to your ability to vary your pace as the race dictates it?"

What do you think my first question in Mugello is going to be? In fact, I will be phoning Wilco Zeelenberg tomorrow, and will ask him exactly that.

However, to say that Lorenzo's problem is caused by his reliance on TC seems as selective as the claims as against Stoner. If he suffered because his tire was spinning, how come he crushed the opposition at Le Mans last year? And he really did crush them, he laid waste to the rest of the field. Conditions were pretty much identical in both this year's and last year's race.

Oh, and by the way, .... you, why don't YOU go and do some investigative journalism? I'm in ....... showbizz.

I can't recall the practice sessions from last year but did Lorenzo have a chance to set up his bike for wet before e race?

Yes. He also had a chance this morning, as the track was wet, and the set up they used in the race was only slightly different (softer suspension) from the morning warm up.

If I ever come to Australia, I'm coming to your office and I'm going to stand over you, shouting at you telling you how to do your job.

Is there a chance that Lorenzo's gps got out of sync with the track, I know that's happened to Ducati before, not sure if that's possible for Yamaha and their electronics package.

So last year with more set up he got it right.  This year with minimal set up he didn't.  Sort of proves my point.  I doubt any of the other riders got it right also but they were able to ride around it because they rely more on their right hand.

Feel free.  I get judged every day I work and I lay my families survival on it as I work in sales and I work on 100% commission.  No safety net.  If I don't deliver for my customers I don't make any money.  As a journalist, your reader is your customer.  Just as someone who doesn't buy from me is giving me feedback your reader gives feedback from making a comment.  If I chose to be a journalist in MotoGP then yes I would ask the question I posed.  If I was able to get a scoop that Lorenzo is the ultimate TC jockey I would go for it.  The Rossi fanboi's would love you because it would give them a reason to claim Rossi is better than Lorenzo.  The Pedrosa and Stoner fanboi's would love you because Lorenzo only beat them due to TC.  I can only see upsides for your clicks.  Of course you will get locked out of asking Lorenzo a question for the rest of time but you will have scored a scoop.

See Kropotkin's earlier post. You are saying something very similar to what was said about Stoner in 2007, which it eventuated was completely incorrect, or so you (and I) believe anyway. Jorge also was fast in the warm up this year, and streeted the field last year, both in similar conditions.

I don't dispute that something may have been wrong with the electronic riding aids on his bike in this race, as someone has mentioned. I recall a race where the track position stuff got out of sync, for Nicky Hayden iirc.

So...was that minor change enough to account for him dropping from fastest in WUP to looking hapless in the race?

That is a very good question. Lorenzo would say no. Bridgestone would say yes.

Thanks, Krop. Just read your round-up on MMatters and some quotes from Lorenzo...quite strange really, given where he was in WUP, but then Dani was down in 8th in WUP and went on to win it. So perhaps the question is just as much - What did Honda find?

Jorge & Danny really sucked in the rain in the lower classes. Is their improvment down to better electronics in the premier class? Or have they worked hard on their deficiencies?

Having a closer look at this ... Rossi actually gets his right leg caught under the bike for a while.

Wouldn't be surprised if he has some lingering issues arising from it (hope not)

Great ride Cal ... and if it did keep raining there would have been a Duc on the podium for sure !!!!

This race just shows how much Lorenzo is a traction control reliant rider.  There is always talk about how metronomic he is.  In my opinion, it is not Lorenzo that is metronomic it is the TC that is the real metronome.  He rides it to where the TC controls every corner entry, apex and exit.  That is why his laps are always so similar and why he has to do race simulations so the TC can be set up to handle and maximise the deteriorating tyre.

In this race, when they had no set up time for the TC he is all at sea.  He can not fall back on throttle control like the other riders do.  He complained of the tyre spinning up so much.  Well, so does everybody's but that is what the hand on the throttle is for, modulating the power to the rear wheel by feel.  This is something that Lorenzo has lost since his 250 days.

The most important man on Lorenzo's side of the garage is the electronics man.  He is the real WC.

Interesting theory - tho you don't sufficiently explain why all of a sudden this issue has manifested so dramatically at this one race. Are we really to believe that Lorenzo (and his electronics man) were the only ones to be caught out by lack of preparation time? Does it seem likely that all the riders with less experience both in both the realms of set-up and riding just all got lucky? Doesn't seem plausible to me.

Lorenzo and Pedrosa have both practiced a lot with riding in tricky conditions. Lorenzo spent some time riding on his dad's go kart track which had been doused with water. Pedrosa won't reveal his secret, but rumors say he was riding on a go kart track covered in sand.
