“Dovizioso: my revolutionary normality and my true regret: Simoncelli”

More or less a year ago they told him: the supercampione arrives, Jorge Lorenzo arrives, if you want to stay, this is the offer, to take or to leave. In the sense: he will show us the way, you will follow it.

More or less a year later he, the Spaniard of Providence, won zero races, while those who had been forced to reduce their salary and to chew bitter so as to remain he won six, is vice world champion and has shown the way. It is not a fable.
It looks like us. It is the most beautiful sporting history of the year. That of the pilot next door "and this definition I like" says Andrea, that of the invisible pilot "and I like it less", that of the pilot who was born at the age of 31 "and this just makes me ..." immediately he is silent. Andrea Dovizioso is like that. Direct. Outspoken. He has just finished celebrating Christmas with the workers and employees of the Ducati, the same ones who should have greeted a year ago why take or leave ... And today he looked like one of them. Because Andrea is a marvelous contradiction: an antiperspiration that became a character «and blossomed at the age of 31» still whispers.

"Who speaks like this does not know me. It's one of the reasons why I have not read newspapers or listened to comments on TV for years. I did not have the possibility to defend myself, I was in a disastrous position, the substance did not emerge, they were interested in people who obtained results inferior to mine but more character ».

Then, all of a sudden, 2017.
"Victories always help. It becomes interesting. But the spotlights go out quickly. My real exploit is not having won on the Ducati which, incidentally, is different from any other bike; it is not done this six times this year; and it is not having fought for the title until the last race. The exploit has succeeded in getting excited in my way: that is, remaining myself, without compromise, calm, reserved, never showman ».

In fact, invisible.
"Well no. My normalcy, in the midst of a world of excesses, has instead amazed, revealing itself original. Today it is all a question of image. It must appear regardless of what you really are or do. Social media are important but managed very badly ".

Are you on social networks?
"I must. Just the minimum ».

A 13 year old before this meeting: go to talk with Dovi? Strong the Dovi. And an 80 year old: goes to Dovizioso? It seems smart that boy, a great good person.
«I think I liked this not wanting to be the center of attention, this desire of normality has united different people and different generations. People probably recognize themselves more easily in a person who despite doing non-normal things, despite gaining figures that are very different from ordinary people, lives and reasons and behaves exactly like them. Without excess. And this gives me a satisfaction that is priceless ».

Revolutionary normality.
"Let's say I've never adapted to the system."

Besides not appearing, you openly criticize me: I was wrong this, I could have done ...
"Because I hate whoever says dances. And it's full. So I say everything, I do not care about the consequences ».

The applause of the Valencia paddock to the finished world.
"There is applause and applause: that was sincere. Team opponents, pilots opponents, people who until this year had always ignored me have taken to support me. Here it is. If you can create all this, it's because you're transmitting something and like it. And if you like me, it means that you like normality. Otherwise you can not even see me. "

Are you not complex for a world a little bread and salami like motorcycling?
"Take off a little."

You need sensitive people to understand you thoroughly.
"In fact I struggle".

What do you mean?
"For example, my relationship with Ducati: it was very complicated because I do not compromise too much."

Last year, yes, with the arrival of the cumbersome Lorenzo.
"Because I had a goal and a job of years to go on. The results showed that the compromise was right. But on a human level I do not accept it ».

The Ducati compromise was ...
"Cheap. But also of internal relationships. Because I did not like it at all as I was exposed to the whole question. "

The contract expires at the end of 2018.
"Yes, and we are already negotiating. It will be very complicated to agree. What you decide now will condition immediately 2018 ... Let's see ».

In Valencia, despite Lorenzo had ignored the signs posted by the team that invited him to let you pass while fighting for the title with Marquez, you blocked the start of the controversy. Like to say, hey, nothing happened ...
"More or less".

Something had happened?
"Yup. But in the end what would have changed if I had pushed on the subject to make Jorge come out even worse? The important thing is that in Ducati we know how things have gone and that this situation is paid at the right time ».

Pilot next door also because you live in Forlì and in an hour you are in Ducati. As if I were a worker, an employee who goes to the factory ...
"You would not call me that. Out of respect for those who really make a bunch working every day. But one thing is true: in the MotoGP world, drivers and teams can be seen at races and tests, then, maybe for months, nothing. Not me. I really wanted to get into the Ducati mechanisms and they let me. Perhaps this is why renewal is now complicated. Because I want certain human relationships to improve, because it is not enough to talk about money and I want that which does not suit me change (long ago asked a more drivable bike in the center of the curve, otherwise on certain tracks, there will never be a game, ed) ».

Pilot next door and pilot-father.
"Sara is eight years old. He lives with me. I'm a present dad. Races and commitments permitting. As soon as I can I stay at home. Sometimes I quarrel with the Ducati to participate in fewer possible events. Only this way can I be more in Forli and follow her. Living the home a lot helps as a parent and get the most out of the bike. For an athlete too many distractions are not good ".

Will you go to school?
"Obvious. And I talk to the teachers. The opposite would be strange, is not it? "

And while waiting for the bell sign autographs to parents.
"Here, yes. And in this I struggle. They have the character in front and they go like in a trance and instead I would just like to say to him that I am like you, normal, nothing more ».

And what's your daughter for?
"A dad who works with the bike. If anything the problem is with his friends ... ».

And what have you become for the world's top riders?
«Until this year I was considered a very strong one but at the end of the season I still beat him.

Then they changed their approach.
Now they know I'm one of them. "

What did you perceive it from?
He smiles. "They do not get distracted anymore when it's my turn to speak in press conferences."

And how do you evaluate them? For example, Rossi.
«Vale is many things. You can love it or hate it but it has attracted and passionate millions of fans. He is the anomalous that sometimes comes out in the sport. It is the Tomb of skiing, it is the Bolt of athletics. It has changed and conditioned our world and when you have the power to condition, it means that you are the king of that world ".

Marquez?
"Marc is one who has moved the limits of the motorbike."

What does it mean?
"Before him, those who had just risked falling could no longer make the most, it was as if race or performance were compromised. Marc has shown that we can make mistakes without then conditioning our performance ».

Forgive the brutal question: when he died Marco Simoncelli told of your strong rivalry. On the day of the funeral, however, you were there. In the midst of his fans who looked at you wrong.
"Marco and I were rivals since we were 7 years old. An inconvenient rivalry. We were a dog and a cat, he was the aggressive one who hobbled, I was the one who was good and calm. Two different ways of life, he playful and light-hearted, I serious and precise. We never tied up. But there has always been a sporting respect because we both knew how strong we were.
Something strange happened to me when Marco died. Keep in mind that we could not be friends, that we did not even talk ... and instead I burst into tears. I who never cried, I found myself in tears. For this reason, before the funeral, I decided to go to his house, from his mother, from his father Paolo. Yeah, dad. With which far there had been a relationship even worse than with Marco. I remember that day, we were one in front of the other and we looked at each other and understood each other. For the first time we understood that for years we had seen ourselves in a distorted way because of competition and rivalry. For the first time we were two real people. And from there a good relationship was born. It 's amazing how life pushes you to become incapable of wrong convictions ... And I, now, looking back on everything that had happened before, I see Marco completely different from how I had lived it. Only it's too late "

A promise for 2018?
"I wish I could say that we will split the world and win, but I can not. Of course, we can do well, but there are technical aspects that need to be improved now, because then it will be too late. That's why I'm worried ".

A friend of yours told me: since he never appears, he lives reserved, ask him about his girlfriend ... she's the most beautiful girl in the world championship.
Ride. "Alessandra is like me. We live on the sidelines. Because our love is not social. We have been together for four years and we have important projects. It is also thanks to him if I now get certain results. The bike is not enough, training is not enough, it is necessary above all that at home everything is fine ». He smiles. "Thinking about it, maybe, I should be a little more social ... The other day he told me: But heck, people do not even know we're together."

In Valencia, despite Lorenzo had ignored the signs posted by the team that invited him to let you pass while fighting for the title with Marquez, you blocked the start of the controversy. Like to say, hey, nothing happened ...

"Yup. But in the end what would have changed if I had pushed on the subject to make Jorge come out even worse? The important thing is that in Ducati we know how things have gone and that this situation is paid at the right time ».

Wow. So, that settles the debate we had on this board.

Jorge should be ready for a fight next year with AD.

I think we miss much in the subtlety of translation. J4 care to comment?

Ok I’ll attempt to translate. Lorenzo is a ..... But honestly, as Rossi’s long time teammate, would you expect any less? Stoner the unmentionable rider who’s biography is not admissible in Rossi court already said Lorenzo is an arrogant ........ Why be surprised about this? Arrogance is likely more important in the social .... media world than talent. Hence the likes of Dovi and the unmentionable rider being relatively low paid.

Interesting Spies was brought up in another thread. As being not quite up to it? I don’t believe that at all. Not arrogant enough, ruthless, a total ......., yeah maybe. Not talented enough? .... how many riders jumped straight into WSBK on anything but a ‘cheater’ Ducati and won the championship on tracks unknown to him with his so called ‘crazy mom’ in his ear in the first year!! This guy was a huge talent, What I’m saying is we get preconditioned into what is greatness by our social .... media. Look between the lines, Tom Sykes was actually Spies teammate in SBK. You won’t find another rider better on that Yamaha than Ben Spies. It was in fact a piece of ..... Spies was just that good. He was unfortunate to enter MotoGP in the 800cc Bridgestone Rossi Dorna era. Yet he did well well enough, better than any other SBK convert. But perhaps just not willing to whore himself out, ultimately he was broken by the system and replaced by ironic Rossi return of the protical son.

Dovi, same thing. Really back then it’s a little ackowledged fact it wasn’t Rossi that masterminded this whole fanclub phenomenon it was the big soccer fan Biaggi’s brainchild. Rossi’s minders immediately saw the potential and leached the yellow smoke we so commonly see today. Some riders remain above it, Dovi being one and recently we heard Zarco is another. Bravo I say, one day we might even see a return to the glory days. Fan clubs and supporters were of little use on 500cc. Consider one of the all time greats in Mick Doohan jumped straight on a factory Rothmans Honda and wanted to jump straight back of it as soon as he could. It was lucky for him Lawson was his teammate. This is above all else why I admire Lawson above almost all other riders. He actually helped his fellow competitors. He wasn’t all about himself. And he hated the media and would likely have had 1/1000000 the followers on social .... media that Rossi has. Because he was ‘dull and boring’. Unless you were lucky enough to get to know him personally. Ok I’ll grant at this point Rossi is probably a great person to be lucky enough to know, but he’s still a manipulating media .... haha.

Time out, go Dovi. Lorenzo will try to out manipulate him, or simply force him out. Because he’s been shown up, like many before him. I doubt he will succeed. Ducati in MotoGP is like the old days of 500cc. Sorts out the men from the boys so to speak. They still only have one very unpopular champion. Hopefully that will soon be two.

Spies himself commented that he didn't think he could ever truly beat the top three or four guys consistently. I, along with other forum members, happen to disagree with him. He was very, very talented. It's just not possible to jump on the Bridgestone-shod 800cc bikes and immediately beat Stoner and Lorenzo.

By the way, It's hard to dislike Dovi. He seems like the best human being out of the top riders. He's maybe not the flashiest, most entertaining or whatever, but he seems like a well-grounded, polite and thoughtful person.

Reminds me of Nicky, RIP.

I'd like to think Dovi's confidence will be at an all-time high going into 2018. If Ducati's been doing their job over the winter - he should come out slugging. Lorenzo's had a whole season to adjust to the Duc. I'll be surprised if he does a whole lot better than last year.

Not unless Ducati throw all their support behind Dovi and cut Jorge out of the loop, which would possibly not be entirely undeserved, imo.

He was actually getting quite fast on the thing towards the end of last season. As always with him, it will also depend on what tyres Michelin bring this seaso.

That's the kind of thing that drives me crazy with some of these teams. From a purely practical point - it would make sense to put resources behind the rider with the most merit, ie: the one who accumulates the most points and is the least finicky about tires. If Ducati puts Dovi on the back-burner the way Honda did to Nicky - I think it will earn them a good deal of ill will, especially from the Italian fans. But of course - Lorenzo is the one with the fattest contract, the one with whom Ducati are most invested. I'd like to think they will do the right thing, but as usual, I'm not holding my breath.

What Honda did with Nicky was a disgrace. I remember when Nicky first tested the Honda RC212V, he immediately said its biggest problem was a lack of power. Dani said the power was sufficient. Honda followed Dani's input, and focused on Dani's concerns.

After the first few races, Dani was crying for more power.

I think Ducati at least, with only 1 title, will go with the rider that gives them the best chance of a championship, as they did in 2007 despite Stoner basically starting as a 1 year placeholder. I do think if Jorge has suitable tyres with a year’s experience on the bike will be fast on the bike if Dovi is, if not as consistently fast as Dovi.

Nicky at HRC particularly in 2006 was ridiculous. I don’t know how much influence Repsol and Puig had, but it almost seemed in 2006 that they would rather not win unless they could win with Pedrosa.

He was very fast towards the end of the season. I still think Dovi will edge him, but it wouldn't surprise me if Jorge stepped up again.

2006 was incomprehensible. HRC were still making him test parts for the 800 all the way up to the Phillip Island round (and the stupid 'evo' clutch caused him to fall back from pole position to 13th or 14th in that race!).
