Brno 2016

Marc Marquez says he has been copying the riding style of nearest title rival Jorge Lorenzo in a bid to improve his long-run pace for the Czech Grand Prix.

Honda rider Marquez scorched to an unlikely pole at Brno on Saturday, beating Lorenzo by two tenths thanks to a mesmerising final lap in which he dived past Valentino Rossi at the last corner.

It followed a third practice session where Lorenzo dominated, leading points leader Marquez to look towards his nearest title challenger to make some changes to his style to help tyre longevity.

The two-time champion said a combination of these changes, plus some set-up tweaks – including the use of aerodynamic winglets – helped him improve.

“Yesterday we focused more on the electronics, I tried some things but I didn’t like it, so we went back,” Marquez explained. “But we saw at this circuit the wings had potential, so we used them in FP4.

“One of my problems was when the tyre dropped, it was sliding a lot, I wasn’t able to find the grip and I was losing even more on acceleration.

“But we found something there, and now I am able to ride smoother and faster. This is the main target is always try to copy the best rider.

“Lorenzo was fastest in FP3, so I tried to copy more his style here – [although] it’s completely different – and looks like it’s working well.”

However, the Spaniard still feels his race pace is lacking slightly compared to his immediate rivals, adding: "Basically they are slower for one lap, but for the race distance, even I am a little bit slower [by] one tenth, two tenths.

“This morning [in FP3] it was nine tenths to Jorge, this afternoon it was much better with the used tyres, we improved the set-up.

“So I will think there will be four or five riders: the two Yamaha riders, plus [Andrea] Iannone, and we cannot forget [Maverick] Vinales, he’s riding well too and he can be there in the race.”

Lorenzo “prepared” to fight Marquez

For his part, Lorenzo said he was taken aback by the speed of Marquez’s pole lap – but remains confident of having the long-run pace to challenge the Honda rider on Sunday.

“Marc was really impressive, I didn’t expect him to be so fast,” Lorenzo admitted. “It’s impressive.

“Anyway, we expected pole position, but second place is a good place to start tomorrow, knowing we have a very good pace with old tyres. We worked very well to keep a constant pace.

“Let’s see about the weather, if the race will be dry, and if it’s like that we are prepared.”

Lorenzo put in a stunning lap, then backs it up by besting his time by a 10th. It was a pole record lap. Pole was all but a formality at this point. Marc was in traffic behind two slower riders. When he came up on those two and you'd think, it's over, Lorenzo on pole. But ....... Marc rode as if the two slow ..... in front of him didn’t exist. Rossi clearly trying to catch a tow from the junior Yamaha rider, I guess he likes to get on the rear of kids that won't complain. Marc splits them, passed Rossi on last corner wilst in utter control. No dive bomb, but a skillfull maneuver to slice through slower traffic. That was both amazing and hilarious.

Tonight Conor McGregor beats Nate Diaz. Tomorrow Rossi beats Marquez and Lorenzo. Will be a good weekend for me.

MM looked pretty safe on his pole lap, actually. VR didn't flinch with the pass and MM was much faster than PE with more than enough track to pass. PE was the slowest guy out there. I don't know why VR didn't want to pass him. I like that VR passed MM back on the next lap. Funny stuff between these two, that is for sure.

I think it will be a good race between the usual top guys, unless it's wet, then JL will probably be peddling around in 12th.

I don't know why VR didn't want to pass him.

I think I know ...

MM's one good lap all weekend put him on pole, while JLow has been fast all weekend, I think this race is JLows to loose.

You think Marc was going to admit to purposely getting into Rossi's slipstream because he knew he needed assistance to beat Lorenzo's time?

Lorenzo set his times without any slipstream, he was the best rider in Q2.

Dude, wth are you babbling about. Marquez started that lap roughly 60 yards behind Rossi, not exactly tow position. Its not his fault he was a second faster than Rossi. IF, and its a big IF, he gained anything from Rossi being slow, it was by no means planned.

No one has ever got pole position using Pol.
Correct. That's why Rossi trying to get a tow from him was hilarious. And you're right, no one has ever got pole position using Pol...still.

You're right. I must of missed that part. Did you see when Rossi was upset he didn't get pole so he kicked Pol's bike? Was freakin hilarious Jums! High Five!!

The front end of that 93 is so sorted. Get out the way Supposed goat you were made to look like a pensioner today. Should be good race in the dry, if wet it's anyone's.

I'm ...... fed up of wet races though

The turn 11 incidents involving Luthi and Crutchlow today were astonishing in view of the fact that Rossi put his M1 on top of a cameraman's car roof last year. (Incidentally, good to know that Luthi is ok following that ugly highside later in qualifying). The fence had been raised but still two bikes ended up on the perimeter road. I remember Melandri chucking his RCV over the barrier at Misano one year but for this to happen two years in succession is very concerning.

Be going some to top this though...

You are dreaming if you believe that to be true.

Point out when Rossi did something to interfere with Pol's lap. Rossi easily had far more pace than Pol, but he didn't force his way up the inside to interfere with Pol's qualifying. If he had, Rossi haters would be calling for him to be penalized.

Pata Yamaha World Superbike star Alex Lowes will make his MotoGP debut on a Tech 3 Yamaha during Monday's official test at Brno.

The ride is a reward for his part in Yamaha's Suzuka 8 Hours victory, when he rode alongside current Tech 3 racer Pol Espargaro and Katsuyuki Nakasuga.

"I'm really looking forward to Monday's test on the YZR-M1," Lowes said. "I'm very thankful to Yamaha for providing me the opportunity, and to Hervé Poncharal and the Monster Yamaha Tech3 team for making it possible.

"Brno is a fantastic circuit and it will be good to work with Pol again, from inside his own garage this time!

"It's been a good month already with the Suzuka victory and a really positive test this week on the World Superbike. Yamaha giving me the chance to try one of the best MotoGP bikes in the world will be a great experience for me as a rider and really is the icing on the cake!"

Alex's twin brother Sam is joining MotoGP next season with Aprilia.

So when did #46 become Saint Valentino? Rossi cares about one person! As mention before, he was looking to set his fast lap off the back of Pol. Marc was no where near these two slow pokes as he set off for his flying lap. I saw this live this morning via motogp subscription. Not bits from fuckbook like you.

#46 is a ruthless competitor, however most riders (including 46) don't usually attempt to execute much passing in corners during qualifying because of the chance of interfering with other rider's lap. During a race, he would block pass Pol the first chance he got.

Rossi was setting himself up to pass Pol on the straight, Marc saw that and took advantage of the line Rossi was using to pass on the inside. Not really a big deal, but I know a few folks here would have a major problem if it was Rossi doing the same thing to Marc.

Preparing to begin his final qualifying lap, the Italian found himself behind the younger Espargaro entering the final left-right. Unknown to him, Marquez was close behind on his own fastest lap. The Repsol Honda rider ruthlessly plunged under Rossi, hampering his drive out of the final corner.

Rossi was quick to shrug the move off: “I arrive too quick to Espargaro, and I want to wait for overtake Espargaro on the straight, but when I slow down to exit faster, I don't know that Marc is behind, and arrive also Márquez, for my last lap. But these things happen.”

Marquez was nearly a second faster than Rossi what's he meant to do pull over and take a bow. Get over it.
