Matt Birt said a couple of times that Pedro stated a move to MotoGP may not be as certain as he previously thought. What's with that?
Fiik.
He won't be in moto2 next year imo. Doesn't seem plausible at all to me.

Surely you would ditch Miller or Pol and give him one of those seats. Neither will ever be world champ and they've had time. Pedro has far more promise in that respect.

I'll guess that Acosta will take Pol's bike but it does also depend on what's written in the contracts. In the situation that Acosta ended up somewhere else such as Repsol Honda it would be likely that Acosta would only sign a 1 year contract and then move to KTM or Ducati the following year.
No chance repsol would offer him a 1 year contract. A guy like this would be a 2 or more year contract. It makes no sense to sign the next great hope just to develop for one year. Repsol is looking for their future.

Totally agree. Even given their current form. No way is Honda going to basically give a KTM contracted rider a year to polish themselves before going somewhere else.

KTM HAVE to ditch one of their riders, simple. As others have said, the likely scenario is Pol gets a test rider/wildcard role.

EDIT: Well that aged well.

Supposedly Speedweek is reporting that Pol and Acosta are confirmed at GasGas for 2024

GASGAS Tech3: 2024 mit Pol Espargaró und Pedro Acosta

Pierer Mobility AG did not get any additional MotoGP seats for 2024 and therefore had to make a difficult decision. Now it is clear: Augusto Fernández will be the test and replacement rider.

SPEEDWEEK.COM provides this translated article advertising-free.

Already at the Portugal GP at the end of March it became obvious that Pierer Mobility AG could slip into a dilemma, because a personnel bottleneck was to be expected at the GASGAS Tech3 Factory Racing Team for 2024. Pol Espargaró had a contract for 2024, Moto2 World Champion Augusto Fernández was to be granted a second MotoGP season next year, and in addition the promotion of Moto2 World Championship favourite Pedro Acosta to MotoGP had to be expected.

The Austrians tried for months to get the two vacant Suzuki MotoGP slots from Dorna, but did not get them because they remain reserved for a new manufacturer like BMW or MV Agusta. The Pierer Group wanted to hand over the new third MotoGP team to Aki Ajo (he now runs the successful Moto3 and Moto2 team for Red Bull KTM). The Finn was still hoping for a race team at Silverstone at the beginning of August - and there was a fixed starter in Pedro Acosta. Marc Márquez was also repeatedly linked to these plans, at least by team manager Francesco Guidotti.

But Pierer's hopes of getting two MotoGP slots from Gresini, LCR or RNF did not materialise either. And after a meeting between KTM company boss Stefan Pierer, board member Hubert Trunkenpolz and motorsport director Pit Beirer on Friday at the Spielberg GP (on 18 August) with Carmelo and Carlos Ezpeleta, it was finally clear: there are no two additional slots for 2024.

So a decision was made at the Pierer Group at the Austrian GP, and SPEEDWEEK.com reported exclusively: Pol Espargaró and Augusto Fernández are to fight it out for the second GASGAS place next to Pedro Acosta, who is considered the new Marc Márquez and is already 50 points ahead of Tony Arbolino in the Morto2 World Championship.

In the meantime it has been decided: Pol Espargaró and Pedro Acosta will form the GASGAS-Tech3 team in 2024. Pierer, Trunkenpolz and Beirer have now agreed on this.

After all, Pol Espargaró has made a name for himself with some strong performances after his serious injuries in Portimão, for example with 6th place in the sprint at Spielberg, his second Grand Prix after the four-and-a-half-month break.

Pol has also done himself great credit in the development of the KTM RC16 over the four years from 2017 to 2020, with six podiums and two pole positions.

Rookie Augusto Fernández, however, will take over the role of test and reserve rider from the Pierer Group in future at GASGAS and KTM after his promising and consistent performances - and will contest at least six Grand Prix in 2024 with a wildcard.

"With the 22 Grand Prix planned, it is becoming increasingly important for the factories to have strong test and reserve riders under contract," Stefan Pierer and Hubert Trunkenpolz noted in an interview with SPEEDWEEK.com.

The consolation for Augusto Fernández: The Pierer Group definitely wants a third MotoGP team for 2025, where the Spaniard should then get a permanent position again.

Just read that it looks like Fernandez is out for Acosta. KTM will make him a test/replacement with hopes to acquire another bike in 2025 for him. They were denied another bike for next year what makes them think they can get one for 2025? KTM throws away young talented riders like they are used napkins. No offence to Jack and Pol but we know who they are. We know their potential. They tossed Jorge Martin aside for riders that are no longer there. KTM is KTM's worst enemy. If is was Pedro I'd demand a factory bike or walk. Let the KTM carousel continue,

Imagine Acosta regularly beats the KTM factory bikes next year but cannot get past the top ducs. Lets say he is who we thought he could be but he came up short of a championship because of an inferior bike. Thats absolutely idiotic of ktm to not attempt to get the most out of a rider with a lot of potential. Pedro needs to look out for Pedro. He should ask for a factory bike and a 3 year motogp contract to give him time to get the most of his potential.

That all but confirms Pol will be demoted to test rider next year.
Speedweek used to be reliable but every single rumor they (aka Günther Wiesinger) put out this silly season was wrong.

Totally agree. I've said it before and know that it is considered unpopular but the likes of the Espargaros' (both), Miller, Vinales etc...they;ve done very little and will not magically change after nearly (or over) 10 years in the sport. Why do teams covet these riders?

I don't like Ducati but at least they invest in young up and coming riders. I mean, no-one who was riding the Factory, Pramac bikes are on them now, with only 1 (Pecco) even still in the company.

It helps that Ducati has 60 ....... bikes on the grid. What KTM does is sinks their claws into these riders while they are young and promises them the world. Its getting old which is why I say Pedro needs to look out for himself. He needs to be demanding so he doesn't end up another rider in KTM's trash bin.

KTM will most likely negotiate to add one of the existing teams (Gresini or LCR) to its ranks. They already tried with LCR but their contract with Honda runs until the end of 2024.

Dropping Augusto instead of Pol is idiotic. I get there are contract things making things difficult, but just simply pay out the reminder of Pol's contract and tell him to become a test rider or seek a ride elsewhere. Augusto is gonna stagnate for no good reason. KTM has become a toxic place for riders.

They could get LCR for 2025, but realistically it is Ducati that needs to love a privateer team. Potentially would we have?

KTM
GasGas
Husqvarna or similar (By puschasing Gresini)

Ducati
Pramac

Yamaha
VR46

Honda
LCR

Aprilia
RNF

That gives KTM an edge, but then I dont see any other option.

Agreed, especially after the contract KTM gave Binder. I like Brad but realistically, has he lived up to it?
It's hard to say since Brad is who we use to judge how good the KTM is. I rate him extremely high. Skill wise I think only Marc is better. He is outperforming all the other KTM riders by a lot, well all except Pedrosa. Miller was better on the Ducati so would Binder have better results on the ducati? That would put him in the title hunt. So I say yes Brad is worth the contract he was given.

I think the manufacturers realize that modern MotoGP bikes are no longer the natural progression they once were. Moto2 is primitive by comparison, and getting the riders accustomed to electronics, ride height and aero takes longer to learn than handling power alone.

In the old days the rule was one year to learn, second year to learn to win races, third year to learn to win championships. Does that apply anymore? Martin could be on track. We’ll see, but it seems aero and ride height are delaying rider development and making results somewhat random from year to year.

Bezzecchi and Martin are great this year. Enea is terrible. Bagnaia has reverted back to early 2022. Small changes and updates to tires and other bits are making a big impact on the rider.

Plus, there is a Moto2 champ in the SBK paddock because he had a bad season and exposed his boss for being a punk. The sport is becoming something of a parody regarding talent management. I think that’s something that should weigh on the MSMA when drafting a new formula.

Good post and I can't disagree. What I'd also say is that even changes in bike are now a serious stumbling block. Even ignoring his injury riddled season, Bastianini has never gelled with the GP23 like he did the 21 and even going into round 1, I was disappointed at his apparent lack of pace on the new bike. Unless he has a large transformation by middle of next yr, I cannot see any way Ducati don't replace him with Martin.

Like F1, certain bikes seem to have certain concepts and inherent chartacteristics now that very few riders seem to be able to adapt to. When was the last time we saw a rider make a complete change in team (not satellite to factory) and be hugely successful? I'm taking away satellite Ducati's here because it seems that everyone goes well on them.

Riders have very little time to adapt in the top class, it true now more than ever. The main quality a new MotoGP rider needs is adaptability to all the changes compared to Moto2, 3 or wherever else they came from. This is the main element in the arsenal of skills needed to make it in the big class. The ones everybody talks about are a given: balls, conditioning, sponsorship, etc.

Especially now, the window for “making it“ is narrower than ever.

I know many here like him, but why Binder? Sure, he slides the bike in a photo/video friendly way but so did Nicky Hayden. Where are the results? He is going the way of Pol and Mav.

Binder is the highest in the championship not on a Ducati. It makes perfect sense to give him a good contract and replace other riders as the opportunity arises then see how the new rider(s) perform compared to Binder

Hard to judge Bastainini considering his injuries however MotoGP teams need riders who are up there and Bastinini isn't which brings in the question as to whether he will come back to form or forever be handicapped by his injuries

I get it. I get why the jury is still out on Binder. As Mike said he is the best preforming rider not on a Ducati. He has shown great race pace and race craft. He rarely crashes and rarely takes out other riders. As for his sliding, its cool as ..... Thats worth something. NH69 was also cool as ..... Seriously though he is sliding a bike that is not suppose to be unslidable. He has shown great skill in all kinds of conditions. He has regularly outperformed his teammate. He checks all the boxes for KTM. I don't think any rider on the grid would beat him on the ktm other than Marc.

Sliding the bike is the only thing you've noticed? Other than his rookie year, he has comprehensively beaten anyone else one a KTM. He is consistent and, as Dub said, he hardly ever crashes or make mistakes. I'll go one further though. I'm not so sure if Marc would beat him on a KTM. He could, but I don't think it's foregone conclusion.

Big fan of Binder, his seat should be just about the most secure in the premier class, for the reasons you and MDub gave.

I would back MM against him or pretty much anyone else though unless MM has declined, which the weekend’s events and his performance against other riders on that diabolical Honda suggest he hasn’t. Most evidence would suggest he is better as a rider anyway than my all time favourites Mick Doohan and Casey Stoner, so being better than him is a high bar.
