Martin won 43 Irish road races, he also won the Manx newcomers race in 2000 and got his solitary TT podium in 2005. At the time of his death the "Flying Finn" was the fastest Irishman to ever lap the TT circuit. Since 2009 the TT organisers awarded the Martin Finnegan trophy to the fastest Irish rider each meeting. There is also a corner named after him on the Skerries circuit close to his hometown of Lusk.
